Chris Gould's 'Best of 2005'
Chris Gould takes us on a trip through his top DVD releases of the past year
Let me preface this article by expressing the difficulty I had in actually selecting ten truly memorable DVD releases from this year. With the majority of the ‘big name’ titles already available, it mostly came down to the quality of the films and whether the release represented value for money (some would say this is the most important criterion to base such a list on anyway). So, with no Star Wars trilogy, no extended editions of the Lord of the Rings movies, and no ultimate collections of the Matrix films to choose from, what made it into my top ten this year? Well, here we go with the list, in no particular order I might add.
First up we have probably the most obvious candidate of the year. It’s obvious because it’s one of the most recently-released titles on the list, but also because it’s the culmination of three decades of rabid Star Wars fanaticism on my part. Alright, so the movie itself was another disappointment, but the same cannot be said of the DVD. Starting with the ever-impressive Vang Ling menus, continuing through the spectacular audio-visual experience and ending with the wealth of in-depth bonus material, Revenge of the Sith is a new technical benchmark if nothing else. Is it the best release of the year? I guess that depends largely on your point of view (to paraphrase an old Jedi Knight).

For the next entry we go back to May for a film that, had it received a more comprehensive set of supplements, would have undoubtedly been my number one choice for the year. Put simply, Team America: World Police is a movie that gets funnier every time I watch it. While the audio-visual elements of the disc were perfectly acceptable, I couldn’t help feeling a little short-changed by the bonus material. After the excellent release of Orgazmo, with its hours and hours of supplemental features, this Parker/Stone collaboration’s selection of deleted scenes, featurettes and trailers just doesn’t seem as impressive. A commentary from the guys would probably have sealed the deal, but alas it was not to be. Still, the disc is worth it for the film alone, so anything else is a bonus!

Next up is an odd choice, for me at least. The Phantasm series was one that I’d never really had much exposure to, but Anchor bay’s recent boxed set impressed me greatly. Even putting aside the excellent restoration work done for the films themselves, the bonus material is extremely comprehensive, with hours of commentaries, documentaries, featurettes, trailers and more. What was especially pleasing about the release was the manner in which all of the principal cast and crew got involved, offering in-depth, candid interviews and serving up some genuinely entertaining commentary on the movies. Furthermore, they actually managed to sound as if they were enjoying themselves; something that is all-too rare among the promotional fluff served up on most releases. It’s quite sobering that in a year filled with relatively poor ‘blockbusters’ the release that offered the best supplemental material was based on a series of low-budget horror flicks produced mostly in the 70s and 80s…

The next entry on the list was a shoe-in from the start. I was greatly impressed by Frank Miller’s Sin City during its theatrical run, making it one of the must-have DVDs of the year for me. While the original release offered a superb audio-visual experience it was severely lacking when it came to bonus material, but thankfully the current trend of releasing improved versions of our favourite DVDs a few months down the line yielded this ‘Recut, Extended, Unrated’ release. Including both the theatrical version and a new edition of the movie claiming over twenty minutes of additional footage (in reality it’s less than ten when you take credits out of the equation), this is the DVD set that should have been released the first time around. Putting aside the blatant profiteering one can’t help but be impressed by the continued audio-visual excellence and the hours of bonus material on offer.

The next entry in my list is the first Stephen Chow film to gain any real recognition in the UK: Kung Fu Hustle. Chow’s humour may not be to everyone’s taste, but one has to admire his ability to take elements from wildly disparate genres and blend them into a successful movie. The DVD release of the film provides a great audio-visual experience backed up by a more than capable selection of bonus material. Furthermore, the region three ‘Ultimate Edition’ includes a very nice script book to set it apart from the run-of-the-mill region one and two releases, as well as a DTS track not present on the other releases. It’s not the most impressive DVD set of all time, but it’s a solid effort that does a great job of representing a highly entertaining movie.

Moving on we come to the Star Wars: Clone Wars series, of which two volumes were released this year. It’s a sad fact, but these animated shorts proved to be more entertaining that the live-action Star Wars event of the year, with their fast-paced storylines and quirky animation style. I’m cheating slightly by including both volumes as one entry in this list, but they compliment one another very well and it would be hard to separate them. Technically, Fox delivered the goods in the audio-visual department, while offering a reasonable amount of bonus material that concentrates on the hard work and dedication that went into bringing the episodes to the screen.

Now we go way back to January for the DVD release of a relatively unknown (at the time) documentary called Super Size Me. Morgan Spurlock’s life-endangering exposé on the risks of eating too much fast food was enough to put me off of McDonald’s for life, as well as taking a long hard look at some of the other foods I forced into my already abused body. Along with the entertaining feature itself, the DVD release was packed with tons of bonus material including a humorous commentary track, deleted scenes and interviews with the director and other individuals who have decided to fight the good fight against the massive corporations. Super Size Me proves that award-winning documentaries don’t have to be boring or feature Michael Moore. That alone earns it a place in this list.

Batman Begins was arguably the best live-action ‘comic book’ movie of the year (although some Sin City supporters would probably disagree). The film managed to breathe new life into a franchise largely ruined by terrible sequels and hammy acting, with Christian Bale’s turn as the caped crusader proving to be an altogether darker experience. Having watched the film again recently I can honestly say that I enjoyed it very much, especially because it received a very respectable two-disc Special Edition release packed with plenty of interesting content, presented in a novel way (items are selected via the pages of an electronic comic book). As is usual for Warner Home Video releases, audio-visual presentation is also top-notch. All-in-all this is a very worthy purchase.

If Sin City and Batman Begins are good examples of successful live-action comic book movies, The Incredibles is definitely the best animated superhero adventure of the year. Managing to out-fantastic the Fantastic Four, this dysfunctional family featured in one of the more enjoyable films of 2004 and certainly one of the most jam-packed DVDs of this year. You’d be hard pushed to find a more appealing audio-visual transfer, but it is the abundance of bonus material that really sets this one apart from the run-of-the-mill ‘Special Editions’ that seem to crop up every week (and really aren’t deserving of the ‘special’ tag). If you want hours of commentaries, short films, featurettes, documentaries, outtakes and deleted scenes, then this is the set for you.

Who’d have thought it? Two Stephen Chow films in the top ten! Proving once again that Korean releases are very near the top of the DVD ladder, Shaolin Soccer: Ultimate Edition includes more versions of the film than is probably healthy, along with a generous amount of bonus material (although that sadly lacks English subtitles). I was surprised to find myself including two Chow films in this list, but I guess it’s a testament to his talent and ability to blend different genres. I can’t imagine Hollywood churning out a kung fu football film any time soon. Anyway, this set is here because of the awesome presentation, improved audio-visual transfer and because, well, it’s my list!

I’m sure many of you will disagree with these choices but, as the saying goes, you can’t please all of the people all of the time (or any of the people judging by some of the comments left on the website). We all have different tastes and that’s the beauty of movies—there’s something for everyone. I haven’t seen everything I wanted to see in 2005 (the Raging Bull special edition for example), but the titles on this list represent the discs that have stuck in my mind over the course of the year. Honourable mentions must also go to the special editions of Orgazmo, Star Trek: First Contact and The Frighteners, the latter for the Peter Jackson commentary and near-four-hour documentary. I also briefly considered including the excellent Special Edition of The Fly, but sadly I received it a little too late to fully explore the set. Another title that missed out was the director’s cut of Hero, but it’s nice to finally have a version that is viewable (unlike the appalling release from mainland China). As always I hope you enjoyed this little stroll down the 2005 DVD release memory lane, and welcome any and all constructive comments as we look forward to 2006. Let’s hope it brings us a better crop of releases than this year.

I don't agree with you, leave it at that.

Yes it does.
But I guess freebies are always the best.

The uncut versions sex scene is a bad taste gem! Dear me.

You're usually going to get that comparing a first issue release to a movie re-issued in a special edition; they've had a lot more time to put the anthology discs together than the few months in between Begins' theatrical release, or whenever they began work on it, and debut on DVD afforded that set. A better comparison would be the first releases of the original Batman films to Begins, which really illustrates just how far the format has come over the past few years.

They probably could have done more with it, but it was such a good genre movie I can overlook that. I enjoyed it at the cinema, and I enjoyed it even more on DVD. I'm more familiar with Marvel characters than DC characters, but if Superman Returns is half as good as Batman Begins I think Marvel will have a battle on their hands when it comes to 'best comic book movie' (which as it stands is probably X2).
Am I the only one who was ever so slightly disappointed with the Special Edition treatment of Batman Begins in comparison to the far more comprehensive SEs of the 1989-1997 Bat flicks?
I liked Super Size Me. Very pointless, but it had a great message not to eat takeout everyday of the week.
Arghhhh! Stop winding me up and get on with the coding
I think I might actually remove the numbers from the article to help the cerebrally challenged...
I agree with Tom there... thought Super Size Me was fun but if you are willing to eat by the junk food then you should be willing to die by the junk food.
Chris, explain again why Star Wars is in first place yet you didn't like it.
Chris, explain again why Star Wars is in first place yet you didn't like it.
The only one I'd disagree with would be Super Size Me. It has gotta be the most pointless documentary ever made. I'm pretty sure if you eat anything that much, you're gonna get ill. I'd wager that you could eat apples morning, noon and night for months - and your body would still have problems. It's all about maintaining a balanced diet. Still, it made him a fat load of cash!
Don't agree with your list (at ALL in fact) but hey you're entitled to your opinion and I can't believe how rude some people here are for attacking it when theirs contains the usual, boring, run of the mill titles you'd expect to see in any major film critics log ie...C**P! Or can they not think for themselves and just write down what they feel they should to try and make themselves look credible to a bunch of people they will never know anyway?
MY List and I've cheated and put TV in as well as Hollywood seems totally incapable of making good films anymore.
1) Mysterious Skin. Best film of the year and the most affecting film I've seen since Requiem for a Dream. If you can stomach it, you'll reep this films many rewards. Shocking, repulsive and beautiful in not so equal measures. It's humanity is unnerving and it is one of the bravest films I have ever seen. It wipes the floor with The Woodsman. Nice extras for a minor film as well.
2) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Yeah, so the father storyline sucks but the rest is pure entertainment +. Depp is amazing as is Violet's mother and I still think he was more Jim Carrey than Wacko Jacko! Fun extras and the transfer is beautiful!
3) Carnivale-Season 1. Got this on a recommendation from a friend and WOW! Such a great set. Amazing performances, production values and a rivetting storyline. Why are Showtime and HBO sets so bloody expensive?
4) Batman Begins. Great film and extras, but how annoying are the menus!
5) Machinist. Amazing film and a decent set of extras once again for a non major film.
6) Desperate Housewives Season 1- Lost, lost me at hello, found me at maybe I'll give it another try a few weeks later and now meh! I just don't care anymore! This however I watched for 2 days straight. Extremely hilarious once you get to know the characters. Brilliant! Was so not convinced when I saw the pilot on tele, but constant nagging got me to give it another chance and it was very hard to turn off when the the penny finally dropped.
7) The Descent - What more is there to say besides, JUST BLOODY WATCH IT! Great extras as well!
8) Wizard of Oz - This years must have classic for old times sake (besides Titanic which I am still yet to open so it may have made my list)) A great set. An amazing restoration of a film that is so annoying you wanna smash the television everytime you watch it. What is with the Angela Landsbury fetish though?
9) Extras/Catherine Tate Show - A tie for these two as they both made me cringe and p**s myself in equal measures. Does British comedy get any funnier than this? Pure GOLD! and the Mcfly Comic Releif skit is an extra. Need I say more!
10) 40 Year Old Virgin - Much funnier than it should have been and a major surprise hit with me. Far too charming for a film of this ilk and I never saw the original so I don't know what was put back in, but it did seem a little long. Very funny extras!
Worst of the year list or YOU CAN'T SHINE A TURD even if the disc shines list.
Constantine- Seriously people, where do I begin.
Crash- Is it just me or was this film about racism?. As subtle as a wrecking ball and as believable as the Amityville Horror
Sin City-I don't get it. I just don't get it. It looked nice though I guess.
War of the Worlds-Speilberg gets it wrong again and don't even start me on the freek!
Revenge of the Sith-The worst of the lot of them and that includes the Phantom Menace.
Firefly Season 1 - Got it so I would understand the movie, didn't care or want to understand any if it after episode 2! Still haven't seen the movie!
Closer-WTF? Pure unaduterated c**p. Not even looking at Portman could save it and BTW just where was her Oscar nominated performance? And um, what was it all supposed to be about and what did it all mean?
Life Aquatic-I haven't got that long, seriously!
Collateral- I don't get the attraction to Michael Mann. Never have and never will!
Ok, so that's it. Fire away I guess.

I'm not sure everyone here is grasping the concept of a subjective list!!
Good work Chris. I liked Batman Begins as well, but I have to say I thought the menus on the special features disc were frustratingly convuluted. I'm all for making nice, intricate menus but they should be legible above all else. Like the Sin City extended edition menus, which were fantastic.
And just to throw my 2 cents in - Life Aquatic. Was that a 2005 release? Criterion have always done Wes Anderson films justice on DVD, and he's very involved in the whole process.

You should see my list for best 2005 DVDs at my site (divided into three categories- Best Single Disc, Best Two Disc, and Best TV on DVD).
Thanks for Your Best 2005 list, Chris. It was a good read.

GREAT pick with Super Size Me. Probably my favorite film of 2004.
Just to throw a wrench into the mix.... Episode III is better than EMPIRE. ;-)

That's the way I am. When I'm watching a DVD and it's not a total bore-fest, I generally have a good feeling about it, and consider it a good ride. For example, I just rewatched Sky Captain the other day with my new surround sound system and I gotta say, that's a kick-ass movie! I'd love to see a sequel one of these days.
When I'm watching a movie that I think particularly grooves, I subconsciously say to myself that it's one of my favorite movies, but then again, I could think the same thing about the next DVD I watch. It's just whatever mood I'm in at the time.

I don't get that. Why are these people getting so worked up over someone elses opinion.
It's *HIS* list people. If you don't agree that's fine, it is your right. But being "dissapointed" and basically telling the guy he is wrong... it's just sad honestly. All of you that are busting a vein over someone elses DVD list really need an internet timeout.

As I've repeated numerous times, it's not my number ten, just one of ten. They are not in order of preference. The Korean set was released in 2005 and was easily one of the most beautifully presented, comprehensive packages of the year. I already own Heat, Casino etc, and as I am far more discerning about why I buy nowadays, re-releases don't figure as highly. However, I didn't actually buy Shaolin Soccer.
Quote: I'm not having a go but it seems pointless saying this is the best DVDs of 2005 if these were the only 10 films you actually bought this year.
You are having a go. Prety much every post you make to this site is antagonistic. I actually got around 53 new titles this year, with around ten of those coming in the last week. This is why disc like The Fly SE aren't included in the main list - I simply haven't had chance to watch them. Had I seen everything it had to offer, the set would probably have edged out Batman Begins, which is there largely on the strength of the film alone (I really liked it).
Quote: Oh and trust me Chris when I say that the films that I've mentioned don't need my backing up, considering you've put an animated Star Wars DVD in your list instead of The Simpsons Season 5 or 6 who work even harder putting the script together and animate the series.
How f**king arrogant is that? The films you chose are so great that we must all just accept that they are more deserving than the ones I mention? Please. You see there's this little thing called subjectivity, which comes into play with lists such as these. You like what you like, I like what I like, and others have entirely different opinions again. This list was intended to generate friendly discussion about people's favourite discs of the year, not open me up to criticism simply because a few people don't agree with my choices.

Casino 2 disc?! huh?!
I only know of the satanic (albeit nicely featured) 10th anniv dual sided b*****d.
Unless other regions got 2 discs instead...in which case you suck.
Region 2 already sucks for the Phantasm ball, too.

But you just have to make a go at it anyway. Don't you understand that this is only HIS opinion, not a written in stone list of the best of all time and you can't disagree? I don't like everything that he put on the list (can't stand Sin City, didn't like the comic either) but can respect that it's his list, not mine.

Have to say here that I have found very few of the Simpson's episodes entertaining. Just not my style. But I enjoyed the heck out of Clone Wars, that it seems that you disagree with simply because it has the name Star Wars attached to it.
Happy New Year btw.

That screen cap taken from Team America makes me laugh out loud every time I see it... and I will often mock the "signal" in public places when I'm with my wife. She hates the movie, but it makes me laugh again...
Anyway, I agree that is a movie that I enjoye time and time again, which is very hard to do with a comedy. I don't buy very many comedy's, because most of the stuff in them is only funny once. Not so for team america in my case.

Such a predictable list; most predictable of all being that Star Wars is No. 1. I guess there's no real point in getting worked up over disagreement with someone else's personal opinion. Some originality would've been nice though.
Why do I bother writing these things when people can't be arsed to read them? Look at it again - I clearly state that they are in no particular order. I don't have a number one 'anything', as my tastes are always evolving. I would also wager a f**k load of cash that if I'd asked you to predict my list yesterday you wouldn't have mentioned half the titles in it.

'Dominated', that's an interesting choice of words. A low-key animated series, two relatively small Asian films, a low budget documentary and a series of very low budget horror films from the last three decades... As I've already said, the list is comprised of films I own. I find it odd that people are actually 'disappointed' by something that's supposed to be a bit of fun.

I dont own (or have seen) all of those, but its a pretty good list. I have a copy of Shaolin Soccer lying around and it was a pretty entertaining film. Still want to see Kung Fu Hustle.
As a whole, I would say the Clone Wars series is equal to, if not more enjoyable than Revenge of the Sith. Plus, the whole droid slapstick bothered me in the movie, before they were more..cold and robotic, now they are all squeaky and sarcastic. And if you played Republic Commando, you had reasons to fear those Super Battle Droids.
The Incredibles and Sin City are probably my favorite films on that list.

Yeah, that's a pretty good list. Was Heat this year? I thought it was last year. I just rewatched Sin City yesterday and I probably need to pick up the new version.
Gladiator 3-disc was a good one. Extended cut, plus all new documentary on the movie itself was an excellent addition to the old 2-disc Signature Edition version.
Kingdom of Heaven would have been a good one had we got the rumored extended version. I've yet to watch all of the 2nd disc on that one.
My list would probably include War of the Worlds 2-disc and (don't shoot me, but...) Stealth 2-disc. Stealth was panned, but actually, I'd call it as this decade's version of Top Gun or Iron Eagle.
Heat (2 Disc, region 1) was release March 2005. I also heard they will release Kingdom of Heaven director's cut...and finally, Iron Eagle is a classic!

Evidently not. The list only includes discs I actually own. Most of the titles you mention are re-releases, which are starting to p**s me off. War of the Worlds isn't a great set. Collateral is ok, but again not a great set. Ong Bak isn't a great film. I really didn't like Land of the Dead. Clerks X came out last year on region one. I really don't see the point of mentioning a bunch of films that I didn't include in the list in a questioning manner. If you want to say what you enjoyed about them, go ahead, but don't reel them out as examples of more worthy films without backing it up.

Also why isn't the unrated version of Team America on there, surely that would of been a better choice over the rated version. In reference to serenity, will you guys in the UK be getting the same version as the region 4?

Chris did mention the Frighteners near the end. It would be hard not to consider such a good DVD release.
Excellent list. The best 'top of 2005' list I've read so far. I wasn't expecting alot of those to get mentioned, especially the great Phantasm set or Super Size Me with its fun bonus features.

Because it's not a particularly good film...
Great list, but I still can't understand how you were so disappointed by Revenge of the Sith lol.

Honestly, were you actually confused?

I own seven of them and the Phantasm Sphere is badass
Here's my favorite DVDs that I bought in 2005 (no particular order):
Sin City (recut, extended and unrated)
Appleseed (tin case)
Batman Begins (Deluxe Edition)
Ong Bak (tin case)
Heat (2 Disc)
Collateral
Gladiator (3 Disc)
Star Wars (III)
Unleashed (aka Danny the Dog)
Rush (30th Anniversary World Tour Deluxe Edition)

I wish you'd either go with the 10 best movies to come out on DVD in 2005 or the 10 best A/V, special features list. The combination of the attributes is kind of confusing in your list.
Still though, enjoyed it enough to read it all.

Great list.
alright, interesting to see peoples list. I love this time of year purposely to see what movies people liked.
Personally, I hated most of the movies on that list, except super size me, that was amazing
