HOw could you ever replicate the original??!
Fantastic film!
I would hope maybe someone like James Cameron might be worth letting him have a go but I will reserve that opinion till Battle Angel comes out

I remember reading that James Cameron looked at making a live action version of Akira before he did Titanic but abandoned it when the esimated budget came in at $300million

Cameron would have been in his element filming something like Akira as opposed to the cliched romance of Titanic. The only part of that movie that works is when it becomes a disaster movie.

I love that. I mean, look at 11 years ago, when Ridley Scott was going to have a go at "I am Legend" with Arnie. They pulled the plug because it would end up costing $100-$150 Million.
Irony much?

They could probably do Akira for the same budget as I Am Legend but Camerons excesses would mean a hugely inflated budget.

Almost sounds like a book that Stephen King & Peter Straub wrote called "The Talisman" quite a few years ago - a great read by the way - and it once had Steven Spielberg attached to it.....
Still waiting....

This is old news and not likely to actually happen. Last I heard the city was Los Angeles, not Manhattan. At any rate, I wouldnt start lining up anytime soon.
I didn't really think Akira was all that superb. I mean it wasn't terrible, but not as great as some people make it out to be. I guess I am in the minority on this though, maybe it was just over hyped before I watched it.
That animated version of Akira could have been better. I have 33 of the graphic novels that I bought back in the late 1980s. They differ from the animation in a number of places. I guess it's to be expected.
This is one movie Hollywood would definitely ruin.

The second i read that DiCaprio was involved i thought it was a bad idea.
