So, if you live in Europe, it looks like there's a bunch of special features that you'll miss out on.

Let's start with an example of what a typical European BD release of Avengers looks like:

Spanish release:

DISC 1

¤ Marvel One Shot: Item 47 (11:20)
¤ A Visual Journey Featurette (6:28)
¤ Gag Reel (4:05)
¤ Deleted Scenes:
¤ Alternate Opening - Maria Hill Interrogation (2:33)
 ¤ Extended Scene - Loki & Barton Strategize (1:43)
¤ Steve Rogers - Man Out of Time (3:03)
¤ Nick Fury & World Security Council (0:52)
¤ Extended Viaduct Fight - Raw Footage (1:40)
¤ Fury & Hill Discuss the World Security Council (0:42)
¤ Extended Scene - Banner and Security Guard (1:37)
¤ Alternate Ending - Maria Hill Interrogation (2:45)

DISC 2

¤ Building a Dream: Assembling the Avengers (1:38:20)
Chapters:
1. Assembling the Avengers
2. Iron Man
3. The Incredible Hulk
4. Iron Man 2
5. Thor
6. Captain America: The First Avenger
7. Marvel's The Avengers

Worth noting here is that there's no mention of the Alternate Opening, Alternate Ending and Steve Rogers: Man Out of Time Deleted Scenes on the BBFC site. Does this mean that these will be missing from the UK release, and what happened to "30 minutes of deleted scenes"?

So what's missing?

Special Features exclusive (?) to the US release:

¤ Audio Commentary with Director Joss Whedon
¤ 20+ more minutes of Deleted Scenes (?)
¤ Assembling the Ultimate Team Featurette
¤ The Avengers Initiative: A Marvel Second Screen App
¤ Music Video - Soundgarden: "Live to Rise"
¤ Other Unannounced Extras

There's a retailer exclusive edition of Avengers from Target in the US that comes with a Bonus Disc with "Over 90 Minutes of Exclusive Footage". I'm pretty sure this is the "Building a Dream" documentary, but if not, then there's even more missing.

So, basically, if you want to have all the extras, you'll have to buy at least two different releases of the film on BD. Sad

EDIT: It now seems as though the same eight Deleted Scenes will appear on all releases, including the US release, which means that there won't be 30 minutes of it on any release.

Also, "Assembling the Ultimate Team" might actually be the "Assembling The Avengers" documentary, but then what about the "over 90 minutes of exclusive footage" on the Target Exclusive? What's that all about?

EDIT 2: Checked Target's homepage and the "over 90 minutes of exclusive footage" is in fact the "Assembling the Avengers" documentary, which is what I originally thought. What's funny about this is that it's definitely not "exclusive" in any way as this disc appears on many, if not all of the Steelbook releases in Europe. Also, it consists almost entirely of behind the scenes material taken from the Blu-ray releases of Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America, so there's really nothing new about it. They even throw in a bit of the famous B-roll footage leaked to YouTube.

There's no commentary track on any of the European releases though.

The Building a Dream: Assembling the Avengers (1:38:20) documentary is available in the UK, it's exclusive to Sainsburys apparently!!

Also lots of rumours going around the net that the UK release of the film has been edited too. Poor show by Disney/Marvel if this is the case.

I'm trying to get confirmation of that now. If it is the case, it's moronic and more than likely because they wanted to use a Eurozone disc for the UK to save money. The film was passed with no cuts by the BBFC, so there's no legal reason for it. Actually, the fact that they might have released a version of the film that wasn't submitted for certification could raise some interesting questions. If it is cut I urge everyone to bombard them with emails demanding a replacement. They treat the UK like c**p (DTS-HD HR audio, fewer extras etc.) while demanding a premium for their titles and it's only in force that we have a chance of getting them to mend their ways.

It is censored.

Yep, I've seen a few screenshots on twitter, the Loki "spear" scene has been digitally edited/censored for some unknown and bizarre reason!!

Looks like my HMV steelbook is going back when it eventually decides to turn up(posted last Weds, not received it yet!) and I'll be ordering the unedited, as seen in cinemas correct US version!

I know people will (probably) quite rightly argue 'but that's not the point', I don't honestly think the sight of the spear, or lack of it, ruins the film.

To be honest, I saw the film once theatrically and again last night (both 2D) and the lack of a spear tip didn't even register. You could also argue that, given the design of Loki's spearhead, it wouldn't have protruded that far anyway and it's inclusion in the theatrical cut was perhaps gratuitous anyway.

Having said that, I agree that films shouldn't be mucked about with and softened after the fact, (A New Hope laser blasts for instance) but people need to take a step back and think about whether this digital removal/change really affects the film in any (substantial) way, or one that makes it a write off.

I don't think it does but I can see why some would.

Anyone thinking about getting the US release for the commentary?

Stfuandplay.com: Director’s commentary

Joss Whedon gives us a pretty insightful and funny commentary here. I didn’t realize how much of a masochist that he was to his crew but he’s a playful masochist so that makes things okay. I like how he’s a fan of his own work and it was fun to hear him be quiet during some of his favorite parts of the movie. He also talks about how he tried to maintain a balance between the comic book side of things and realism. This is one of the best commentaries I’ve heard in a while.

I have emailed Disney UK about this debacle and I am awaiting a reply.

Did anyone see The BBC consumer programme Watchdog in the UK this week. The Avengers UK BD release balls up was brought up on there.

If we all email Disney UK in force like Chris Gould suggests we may get some where!
