Yes, Willy Wonka, Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco, Jack Sparrow, Glen (Nancy's boyfriend in A Nightmare on Elm Street), Ed Wood, Cry Baby... they're all identical characters...
Actually I think Diane Ladd is the most under rated actor/actress. Opinions?

I guess Paramount thinks Tom Cruise is over-rated and over-paid.

Overpaid does not equate to overrated. The whole Tom Cruise thing is probably going to bite Paramount in the ass. They may have paid him a boatload of money, but he made them even more money.

Same character, different job...
No not same character, same face. There is a difference.
Clooney's characterisation of Doug Ross is miles apart from his character in Syriana. It's as far from Seth Geckko (spelling unsure) as you could hope for (were you watching the same movie). His characterisation in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, yes it's so transparent isn't it? It's Doug Ross with a moustache.
Even characters that on the surface might seem similar say the ones in Three Kings and Peacmaker for example, (both army types) are poles apart. One is highly skilled and motivated (Peacemaker) the other jaded and cynical.
It's acting. It's pretend and the only thing these characters have in common as far as I can see, is that they all look like the actor George Clooney.
Gunsprout, you obviously don't like Clooney much and that's fine. Your not compelled to but this dislike is probably why you see all his parts the same as Doug Ross for ER.
My point of view is the flip side of that though. I'm a fan of Clooney's work particularly the choices he has made recently (compared to the road he could have chosen) and that is why I see more than Doug Ross going on with each new film.
