700 DVDs? Thats impressive, I can sympathize with your wife, OCD is a terrible thing to live with.
1) Mine is around 570. I'd say the average is 200 or 300. But no one can beat Jonny with 1000+
2) I catalog through Genres and Box Sets. And I do it online.
3) I sell the ones I no longer want, through friends, or to second hand stores or through my specialist retailer who sells customers' used unwanted DVD's for a special price. Depends on the title really.

Stopped counting when my personal collection got to about 700, but it's all the unused check discs that are the problem as they take up so much space. I reckon if pressed I could get it down to about 200 must-have discs. I hardly buy anything nowadays though because there's not much left that I want. Won't be buying too many BD/HD DVD titles, just the classics.
I have 1209 DVDs, 15 HD DVDs and 14 Blu-Ray Discs. But i'm far from the biggest collector. There are people out there with several thousand DVDs.
Forgot to answer your questions:
1) Average collection? No idea, guess it depends on what kind of people you're looking at, casual collectors or people who have to have everything.
2) I'd say a list that you can control yourself. You don't wanna use a program where different people have entered different films/seasons of a series into the database. Trust me. You want consistency.
3) Don't know, never sold a DVD.

I have over 100 DVDs
2) What is the best way to catalog your DVDs and CDs?
Alphabet order on a Bookcase Shelve in the wreck room and document information on web site www.dvdspot.com
3) What is the most effective way to sell DVDs you don't want anymore or duplicates?
I usually give them to close friends

Most of my friends have between 50 and 200 movies on DVD. Just myself, I have about 800. I have them all displayed in racks here in my computer room in alphabetical order with my box sets taking up the top of each rack.
To keep myself in order, I use www.dvdaf.com and also DVD Profiler. It keeps me where I need to be.
As for selling, I've sold over 400 DVDs since getting into the game to keep space open and rotate my collection around. I keep the essentials, but the side flicks are fair game. I usually try to sell them to friends at work first or if that fails, I take it to a pawn shop where they give me $2. It could be worse.

You've chosen a fitting name. Do you have any pictures of your collection. Would be cool to see.
Unfortunately i've heard of no such pill.

In the spirit of this absurd boast fest of a thread, the title of Kng should not be bestowed on someone who has merely the 3rd largest DVD collection in the land an should renounce his claim on the title. When #1 shows up here, bringing an end to the search for the top most person in the country with more money than sense, only then can someone bandy the title about.
Also, DVD (name to be replaced later) are the works of Guttenberg and Latifah in your collection by any chance?

I'm a n00b when it comes to collections, I only have about 50 right now but I'm constantly buying more when good releases come out...
Sorry. I can't resist.

Yes, indeed, it can be.
Especially when one is a lifelong collector whose budget doesn't allow for him to adequately keep up with one sort of collection, much less SEVERAL!
Believe me, I've often wished that my field of interests were narrower so that I could concentrate my efforts & resources toward just one or two things, but, unfortunately, I'm just not wired that way. Though, I have managed to narrow my focus a bit by putting some of my collections into a sort of "semi-retired" status, if you will & selling off others.
For instance, as a lifelong diehard boxing fan who eventually became a fighter himself & worked in the game for afterward for well over a decade, I'd built up a large boxing memorabilia collection. Everything from on site posters, programs, tickets, magazines, autographed photos, card sets, fightworn items ( gloves, trunks, shoes etc. ) & so on. Things I'd accumulated since I'd first begun to follow the sport as a young lad way back in 1976. In other words, three decades worth of stuff.
On top of all that, was my fight tape collection. Hundreds of VHS filled with bouts that I'd been recording since the early '80s when I'd purchased my first VCR. Plus dozens more that I'd traded for & purchased over the years.
I needed a separate room, just for my boxing stuff alone.
All of which I loved, mind you. But, honestly, it was just SO much stuff in sheer volume. And just bloody back breaking to move. Which, not being a homeowner, I had to do on occasion. Such as in '04 when my wife & I separated.
It was then that I decided that something had to be done. I realized that unless I wanted literally bury myself in my boxing collection, I had to pare it down somehow. And make some tough choices in the process.
With the first thing to go being my fight film/tape collection. As much time & effort as I'd invested in it over the years recording, labeling, cataloging it etc., it was actually quite liberating in the end to "let it go". Even though, many of the fights in it were very rare & would be VERY difficult to ever replace, with all my other interests & such, I saw that 99% of what I had, I'd never actually ever watch again. So, other than my pre-recorded collection, I gave away the entire thing.
Then, I took a long hard look at my massive boxing magazine collection & decided to sell off about a third of it. Then came my posters. I sold about two thirds of them as well. All of which allowed me to consolidate my boxing collection down to a manageable size made up of things that I truly loved & appreciated.
At the same time as doing all this, I also decided to part with my BLACK BELT magazine collection & the bulk of my martial arts related stuff.
I've been training in various martial arts & combatives since even before I developed my interest in boxing. Eventually leading to a black belt in Hawaiian Kempo. With the magazines something that I'd been buying & collecting since the '70s as well. And,while they were hard to part with. Again, as I did & I sold off box after box after box, it was like gaining valuable breathing room.
But, that was all that I parted with & probably, all I ever will. My book collection is made up of several smaller collections actually, of vintage horror paperbacks, Stephen King first edition hardcovers, all my genre fiction ( horror & hardboiled crime mostly ) & graphic novels.
Then there's my Fangoria & other genre magazines collection.
My action figures collection which is small by most figure collector's standards, but which, I hope to improve upon greatly.
Then there are ( FINALLY! ), the subject of this thread ( & indeed, the entire site ) DVDs.
My collection of which is ( like my action figure collection ) by most REAL collectors sizes, quite small. Smaller even than many "average folks who don't consider themselves collectors" collections. Which, rarely ceases to shame & humiliate me. LOL
But, seriously, once again, it's something that I hope to remedy soon. My "wish list" is huge & as soon as my sorry arse gets back to work within the next few weeks ( after the past few years spent being a "stay at home dad" ), I plan on buying as many discs as will my accursed need for food allow me to!

I'm trying to cut down on the LE(s) now and just focus mainly on BD and HD
However, when it comes to Hi-Def LE then it's a completely different matter lol
However, when it comes to Hi-Def LE then it's a completely different matter lol
Which do you prefer right now Boboi? - Blu Ray or HD?
Well It's hard to say since my player is not really a standalone (PS3 and previously X-Box) - But as far as that is concern I much prefer HD DVD to Blu-Ray. For various reasons like many Warner HD DVD has a superior HD Extras. But at the end of the day I'm buying both formats, and mostly from the US because it's the cheapest and I like the US case more than others thick hd case...and my bd player is Region A
So simply, in most cases if the movie get release in both bd/hd I would go for hd. But not I'm temporarily out of hd dvd player, I'm looking to buy Toshiba A35 but still waiting for my friend in the US to get back to me. So right now, only PS3 and BD, which well needless to say that my PS3 has already been "broken" last week, so much for the so called Sony's "Next-Gen" console!

I may be looking to get Blu Ray in 2008. What player are you using to play U.S. Blu Ray DVD's?
HK Play Station 3 (Region A)
Thanks. Makes sense now.

Couple questions:
1) What is the average collection out there?
2) What is the best way to catalog your DVDs and CDs?
3) What is the most effective way to sell DVDs you don't want anymore or duplicates?
