I've been collecting since DVD started, I had about 20 discs before I even had a player as I imported them!  My partner collects to, when we got together our collection now totals 5,852, over 200 are in the "to be watched" pile!  When we moved from the UK to Spain, most of the moving boxes were full of DVDs! LOL

Well, mine has increased to close to 700. The most it will get to 700-800 which includes TV shows I still haven't got around to collect yet.

Why would you buy 200 DVD's you weren't going to watch? That's a lot of wasted money. Especially since European DVD's are so much more then over here.

I import them from the US so they are still cheap, very cheap if you know where to look. Not sure why you say "Why would you buy 200 DVD's you weren't going to watch"  we do watch them, its just that we buy more than what we get around to watch sometimes and therefore they just accumulate....and besides it is amazing how much you can get watched when your ill and off work!

Ideally, I also won't be buying too many BD/HD DVD titles, just the classics and new releases. No need to upgrade the ones that do fine on DVD already unless they're special.

i used to own just over 800,but sold loads on ebay and now have around 500.including 12 blu-rays.

Ok, I feel a little better that just about everyone beats my 400-500 dvd collection. My parents want me to save for a car, but I'm a movie nerd (hence the name) & I plan to write movies someday, so this is my way of "studying" haha

I just catalog them in alphabetical order and then split them into movies & tv. I need to update my list, hell I need to just rewrite the list.

I haven't really gotten rid of my duplicates or the ones I don't want anymore. But I do have duplicates (For some reason I have 2 Sisterhood of the Traveling pants haha) & double dips (like Fantastic Four and HSM). And I'm not really into the whole EBay thing, even though I will buy from it occassionally, I wouldnt even know where to begin to start selling.

1-  What is the average collection out there?
I have over 400 DVDs...at the time. I have had over 850 at a point.  I like to move them through if they are collecting dust so i can justify buying more.

2-  Whats the best way to catalog your DVDs and CDs?
excel spreadheet and displayed on bookshelf in family room.  I always have a problem with some of the titles mysterious disappearing so i now keep some of the more valuable titles in the closet.

3- What's the most effective way to sell used DVDs you don't want anymore or duplicates?     If i want the best prices possible then ebay or even craigslist.org. If i want to avoid the b.s. and hassle of one here and one there I will sell in bulk to mx123.com.  They make it easier to sell to them in bulk and you get close to the same price as you would on ebay/amazon if you consider your time.  If a friend is genuinely interested in a title i will trade.  Thats the best bet.

I dont think there is an average... depends on what you like to buy, if you sell a lot, if you rent (netflix) or something.

How much care goes into a collection and how much you love what you have is what I think is important, not how much you have.

There's no such thing as too much! I'd try categorizing them in either alphabetical, chronological, or by genre. It should be a fun task.

I doubt he's still checking back five years later.
