I sometimes think a good dubbed version is required for some films. The reason I don't watch (or go out of my way to watch)many subtitled films is because I don't enjoy reading films and missing the visuals. In cinemas particularly, it gives me a headache swithching attention from the subtitles to peoples faces and back again. It's tiring on the eyes. It's easier on DVD because the screen is smaller but again (sometimes) I don't mind watching a dubbed version once to 'get' and keep up visually with the story. Not liking foreighn films or subtitled films has nothing to do with intelligence. Just a preference. I realise that preference cuts me off from a lot of good films but in general, even reading a foreighn films synopsis, I'm never really interested in the subjrct matter. Foreign film usually equates to either Manga or dramas with not much going on in them anyway other than people talking to each other.

Again, I should stress, I'm not having a go at foreign film here. I'm just trying to give a viewpoint that doesn't just mean people who don't like subtitled films are thick. There are, I believe, valid reasons as well for a lot of people.

I didn't say all American is bad..i just pointed out that the reason why such c**py films like that are most popular in USA....it couse of US audience: you don't read subtitles, so you don't go and see foreign movies, you don't especialy like to think, so you don't go and see smart films..the other thing ofcourse is the fact trhat Hoolywood can't realy make any good film nowdays...only c**py popcorn flicks.
But i'm not atacking AMerica by aany means- although I honestly admit I don't like it at all, not even a bit.

The problem with making such broad generalisations is that you're leaving yourself wide open.

So no Americans watch foreign films or films with subtitles?  Explain the recent success of Apocalypto.
Americans don't like films that make them think?  Explain the recent success of Children Of Men.

I could go on forever.  A lot of bad movies are made in America.  That's true but a lot of movies are made in America, period.  Those movies are in English and seeing as English is widely-spoken around the world, it's no surprise that these films do well around the world.  Bad movies are made in every country (there's a hell of a lot of below-average generic horror coming out of Asia thanks to Ringu) but it's the bad Hollywood movies that get more publicity because the production companies have more money.

Of course it's a culture thing that a large number of people in English-speaking countries don't go to see foreign language films but so what?  Not everyone (and I mean everyone around the world here) who goes into the cinema is a film student and not everyone wants to truly appreciate a cinematic masterpiece.  I do and I bet loads of people who visit this site do too but movies do not make up a huge part of the lives of most people and they just want some easy escapism.  The easiest way to get that is in your own language.

Huh. Thanks for the generalization,£ukasz D. You may not think that we stupid Americans can read subtitles, but we do deserve some kind of recognition for being able to decode your backwards-ass posts. Cripes, man.
Think a little spell checks in order............

Wow... you don't think much before you speak, do you?

What a dumb argument. It's the 15-18 year olds who see it. Don't say anything American is bad, when you don't know c*ap about it

Stuff like this, Scary Movie and Date Movie are just films for people who don't go to the cinema very often.  Teenagers on dates, people stuck for something else to do...  Make a cheap movie that's not very long, stick it in cinemas for a couple of weeks and make a tidy profit.  Job done.

January's usually the time when the studios dump their c**p in cinemas anyway so it's not too surprising that it made #1 because there weren't many other new releases.

Well, while I won't debate its quality, this isn't intended to be the leading Oscar film. It's a movie for people to go to (mostly teenagers, not just Americans) and just be entertained. Movies are allowed to that sometimes, quality be damned.
