Universal's contract actually expired before HD-DVD conceded
But considering how secretive all of the studios have been with the entire format war, who knows what's really going on.

My understanding is that Universal and Paramount will not release any Blu Ray titles without "permission" from Toshiba - otherwise they will lose their "payments" (bribe)for supporting HD DVD. Universal exclusive HD contract with Toshiba was due to expire soon anyway but we may have to wait another year before Paramount/Dreamworks release titles on Blu Ray.
I am holding out buying films like "American Gangster" until the Blu Ray version is released.
Also, I am refusing to replace my existing DVD collection with Blu Ray - as my Upscale DVD player is great for upscaling the image quality (close to HD).

Hey! I'm new to this , O.K? Don't laugh. I'm catching up. I probably won't get a Blu Ray player till 09.
It's been there for ages what took you so long?
Cool. Looking at that list, do I read it right that The (new) Shining Special Edition USBD will play on a UK PS3.
If anyone could confim that I'd appreciate it as I'd kind of given up on getting The Shining on BD. I don't want the UK cut down theatrical version.

Thanks to a friend, I found this very cool website, that tells you exactly which Region A Blu Ray titles are REGION FREE!! Yay!
So, If I was to get a Sony Blu Ray player from Australia, I should be able to play most of these...

I look forward to Paramount's eventual 'wording' with great interest too...
Great that I can now go about collecting my favourites on Blu-ray's high definition format without any worries now. I just hope that future releases will utilise the format to the best of it's potential, with the best of prints used. I'll still need to continue collecting many things on standard DVD too though, as some things will probably never see the light of day on a high definition disc.

Following the announcement of Toshiba discontinuing HD DVD Universal made a statement to Home Media Magazine.
"While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
"The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def´s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate.

Toshiba will deny up until they confirm discontinuing HD-DVD (which could happen tomorrow at their press conference in Japan). There is no choice in the matter. The format is dead in retailers and customers minds. Dr. McCoy has confirmed the patient deceased, mourners are filing past. Only the nails for the coffin remains

I agree though we shouldn't immediately jump top this conclusion unless we see a PR from Toshiba...

Aye, I wasn't including you. Not that I'm saying you're not a lady. And I'm sure you love a good porno as much as the next person. Erm, where did I put that shovel..?
I was only playing by the way.

Why do women always call blokes perverts for watching people have sex, even if they're quite happy to have it themselves?

The Matrix Trilogy was always coming out on BD, it was just pushed back because none of the IME features worked on profile 1.0 machines.

Yeah, unlike everyone else jumping the gun with unofficial news. 'Sources' my arse.
We are keeping an eye out for a press release from Toshiba on this.
HD war is over...apparently.
"Both Japan's NHK and Reuters are reporting that Toshiba is going to finally pull the trigger on HD DVD, ending the format war after being punted by Wal-Mart (the country's biggest retailer), Best Buy and Netflix. The official announcement will come next week, though Reuters' source confirmed that "We have entered the final stage of planning to make our exit from the next generation DVD business." RIP HD DVD, you will always have a place on our mantle."
