I don't seperate mine.
I organize mine by studio/manufacturer, then genre.
Hey, that's what I do too! What a co-incidence. It looks better when you have studio/ manufacturer movies together if though they are a series.
The oldest DVDs at the bottom shelves (always left to right) going up are the newest.
Am I the only one who uses the good old alphabet?
I order the newer ones by theatrical release date.
Argento and Fulci films have their own space, Cartoons and TV shows have a space, Music, and screener discs. Everything else is alphabetical.

Nope. Me too.

I arrange mine by the time honoured method of budget to final gross ratio divided by the total flops againt the director's hits multiplied by 3. That, by a weird coincidence, comes out pretty much alphabetically. Weird eh?
I keep mine in a DVD case so I have a genre and then I sub section them such as Action and then Spy movies, terrorists, cops, robbers, car chase, revenge, hitmen, gangster, war, and then westerns, streetfighters/boxing,
I try and keep the action films that have a a famous actor together such as Eastwood, Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Willis.

I organize my collection by how lavish the titles are.
Box sets by brand / franchaise, then by multiple-disc special edition, then single disc, then bargain bin stuff.

In order from oldest to newest.
HA! Im lucky to be able to find a place to keep all mine let alone organize them
Thanks guys. That was a good question, and I like picking up interesting and odd ideas from you guys. One more qusetion, do you open up all the wrappers, keep the security device, etc?
I'm considering keeping all future dvd's in wrappers to preseve the cover, keep them looking close to brand new.

I pull all the packaging off. I also pull off the silly security device so long as it wont rip the artwork like in a digipak.

Me too, but I organize them separating the movies from the TV Series from the concerts and band DVD´s
To Jonny,
To get the security device off a digipack, just use a swiss army knife. Slide it under the plastic disc holder and work it off. As long as you're careful it works. All mine look perfect.

I organize by genre, then by alphabet within a genre. I have a "Superhero" genre apart from general "Action/Adventure". Zorro movies are included in "Superhero" since he was one of the inspirations for Batman.
Titles within a series are ordered by release date. I have a special section for Hitchcock, Spielberg and Shymalan. I also have a separate rack for foreign films (mostly Hong Kong and Korea). Box sets go on the very top shelf, except for my Lord of the Rings EEs which I keep in a different room. (Slight bit of paranoia there as the movie discs from the first two LOTR EEs mysteriously went missing in December, and I wound up buying replacements.)

So, I've been taking this great medication for OCD for years now, I'm sure I could recommend some...
Alphabetically for me
Keep them coming. This is interesting read, and thought.
depends on how much i've drank and how late it is. lol

Majority of them I organize by directors and then by the year they are released. Kurosawa, Spielberg, Mann, Scott, Gilliam. Then there are certain actors/actresses I buy the DVDs for and categorize it under their names. The rest of the generic stuff, I just put it in good ol' alphabetical order and genre. As for LOTR, I got the Deluxe EE and keep a seperate space for those along with the soundtracks and a couple of figures 'guarding' them. Sounds pretty sad I know.
I usually just have them in the order I bought them. Most of the time though. I have a bunch being borrowed now though and I bought a bunch while they're still being borrowed so it won't really be in order.
Yeah, I noticed some people place them in the order which they order them. From their very first dvd they bought to the latest. I guess it is for their sweet memories.
I sometimes do them alphabetically or the order that I bought them.
by studio, thats it.

Hey thanks Jeff. I've actually tried that a few times. It never works for me
I swear they cement those stupid things in there. At least when you order from say amazon you get a tracker chip glued to a separate piece of bristolboard in the package somewhere you can just throw away.
