In Your Opinion...
What do you think is the most underrated/overrated movie in recent years?

Overrated: Fight Club

Underrated: The Phantom Menace (not because it's the greatest film made in the past 20 years, but because it is so needlessly trashed)

As far as most overrated film in recent years...two immediately come to mind, both from Miramax and both won the Academy Award for Best Picture... The English Patient and Shakespeare In Love. How those films beat out Fargo and Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture still befuddle me to this day...

just a thought: the subject line is there for a reason putting ... is a little annoying.

posting comments that have nothing to do with the thread is a little annoying.

Overrated: Shrek 2
Underrated: The Life Aquatic

No need to get snippy. I wasn't being rude or anything. I just think you should use the subject line for the subject not as a ploy to arouse curiosity.

Mystic River- Overrated
Ravenous-Underrated

Matt, I got your back, on both Fight Club and your over/under choices. Frankly, I also agree with Bryan, PM really is underrated.

And I have to agree with both of your choices too... Mystic River...good movie, but not great and way too melodramatic for my tastes.
Ravenous is one of the strangest and darkly humorous films I have ever seen, everything about it is just off kilter, especially the film's score which induces smirks all on its own...as a matter of fact I may just have to throw that one in tonight before hitting the sack since it's been forever since I last saw it.

hehe, I think half my problem with it was that a friend of mine ruined the plot twist for me before I saw it. That and I have a squeemish stomach for some of the more violent stuff Sad

Couldn't agree more. Neither The English Patient nor Shakespeare in Love did anything for me. Their nominations alone expose the holes in the Academy's system.

I'm with you Gabe; I enjoyed Mystic River, but I thought that all the lavish acclaim and praise it recieved was a bit much.

Bryan, I'd much rather you didn't like Fight CLub, rather than liking it for the wrong reasons, and missing the point of the film alltogether. I have one friend who started a fucking fight club after seeing it. Talk about not getting it.

Overrated:
Garden State - Sure it had some nice Kevin Smith-esque and scenes but I'd hardly say its excellent.
Spoiler The ending was a total Rom-com cliche. J.D. not getting on the plane, the swooping camera was they kissed. Bleh

Hero and House of Flying Daggers - They both had spectacular fight and gorgeous cinematography, but the stories were underwhelming. Hero's was adequate, but disappointing. HoFD had completely turned to shit by the end.

Already mentioned:
Mystic River
Million Dollar Baby

Underrated:
Hulk: It was trashed for having too much plot and not enough action. It was excellent IMO, the best comic movie to date. Great character driven story, and the action was fantastic.

Overrated- The Grudge. People talk about this flick like it's the greatest horror movie ever. I didn't have to see it to know it's terrible.
Underrated- Saved!

I totally agree.
The original Japanese film Ju-On: The Grudge, is just as bad. Broken episodic narrative, cheap scares achieved through quick cutaways and large bursts of score. The yank remake is slightly better IMO, since it has more of a continous narrative.

The adult in me loved Hulk, but the little boy, both inside and sitting next to me, thought they forgot to add any fun to the mix and that it dragged on a bit in long stretches...that and the ending was rather anti-climactic.

Ugh, I hope your kidding. I've never been so bored in a movie theater. Hulk was aweful on all levels. Bad acting, story, CGI, direction, cinematography, etc...

Couldn't stand it in anyway. I've never been more disapointed with a comic book adaption.

Overrated recently?  Lord of the Rings Trilogy and the original Matrix.

Overrated of all time, Star Wars original Trilogy.  "Holy Trilogy"?  My God!

Underrated, loads.  Jack the Bear, Hearts in Atlantis, Van Helsing.

All serious, apart from the Van Helsing comment.

Watching LOTR is like watching an extended computer game with the occasional bit of beautiful scenery thrown in.

The Matrix is the most overblown piece of cod philosophy ever committed to celluoid.  My God Neo!  It´s an anagram of One!  Those brothers are sooooo intelligent!

And the original Star Wars trilogy is OK, but Lucas had already run out of ideas, which is why number three is an almost exact carbon copy of the first!  Gosh!  The rebel Alliance has to blow up a death star.  I´ve never seen that idea before! Happy

Gibb, I can really respect your opinion (though they so differ from my own), but man, I couldn't even finish Jack the Bear.

Overrated -
Spider-Man 2 [I admire Raimi alot, but this film was terribly written, IMHO.]
I, Robot [Similar. I don't have any problem with Alex Proyas, just the fact that they tried to make this look like an adaptation.]
Underrated -
Intimate Strangers [Simply put, one of the most beautiful and emotional films I have seen recently.]
The Corporation [Disturbing to no end, but a documentary I could watch more than once.]

errrr, well actually I was struggling on the "underrated" bit, so simply plucked two titles out of the air that I had enjoyed, and no-one else would have heard of.

Guess I underestimated the movie knowledge on here.

I did enjoy Jack The Bear, but that was a long time ago, would love to try it again and see if it was as good as I remember.  I thought DeVito was excellent in it at the time!
