Probably only on ebay or other auction sites. I went to BB on the same day it was released, and they only had about 6 copies, so luckily I got one. Let this be a lesson to you, always pick up the 2 disc versions on release day!

Yeah absolutely right!!

Universal has gone a bit weird nowadays..with Jarhead and Cinderealla Man..being OOP so soon...

Might be a good idea to pre-order King Kong...just in case?!?!

Another marketing poly from Universal once again. This way, by OOP these 2 disc editions, they made them even more collectible (very much like Criterion editions)for those who are keen on getting the 2 disc editions.

The other possiblity is that they might release some of these in more elaborate editions in the future. King Kong seems to be heading for an extended cut in November. Don't know if Jarhead and Cinderella Man are heading in the same direction. Remember Universal started this trend when they release a limited edition of The Mummy with a DTS track which has since been OOP.

What does Universal have to gain by having a certain title go out-of-print just to make it a collectible? As far as Criterion is concerned, the only reason certain titles go out-of-print is because they aren't able to renew the licensing to manufacture a particular film.

Matt, are you really expecting people to employ logic? You are asking waaay too much.

Supply and demand are quite hard to figure out, but I got mine the week it came out.  It was the last one and I was pretty fortunate (or unfortunate considering the price), but I usually go for the more expensive releases.  It seems to me that Jarhead was glossed over on the DVD releases because of all the other good movies that have been coming out in the last month or so.

Universal doesn't intentionally make SEs rare for any reason.  They don't benefit and any idea that they do is pretty much crazy.

It is a marketing ploy, just not in the way that it was described.  They put out the limited edition 2 disc set so that  real fans of the movie are forced to pony up the extra cash to get that set instead of the loss-leader 1 disc set.  They pull the set early so that you have to make sure you buy it early.  I would be really surprised if we don't see a reissue of the 2-disc Jarhead and Cinderella Man sometime soon.

I never said it wasn't a marketing ploy, just making the point that Universal has nothing to gain by running a short supply of and making it a 'collectible'. As far as I know, they have no stake in eBay and the exorbitant prices that will be asked for sets like this on those types of sites.

The people who are most likely to buy the set would do so right around the release date. The longer the movie has been released on DVD, it becomes less and less likely that someone would choose to purchase the two-disc over the less expensive single-disc (especially once the title has been out for six months or so and the disc becomes heavily discounted), so there is little reason to keep manufacturing the two-disc set if the number of purchases of those sets keep diminishing. Pretty soon the overall cost of manufacturing the set would outweigh the monetary gain of keeping it on the shelves. In Universal's case here, they didn't wait for the returns to diminish and pulled the plug shortly after the release.

I shop mostly online.  Most retailers are showing it out of stock or don't even list the titles any more.  According to BestBuy.com they have the 2 disc Cinderella Man, but not Jarhead.  Want to pick up a copy for me Aaron?  Very Happy

Adrian, I would have been happy to do that, however, I went to my Best Buy today to pick up the Planet of the Apes Legacy Box Set and noticed plenty of single disc copies of "Jarhead" but not a single two-disc set to be found.

I was really only kidding.  I managed to get the Cinderella Man from my local Best Buy.  I've been using their store finder to see if any stores around where any of my good friends live has it and I have a bead on a few.

I can't find the Planet of the Apes Ultimate Collection on Best Buys website.  What were they asking for it?  I ordered it off the web for around $125.

It's tempory out of stock, but it beats paying over the odds on ebay etc, also if you manage to pick it up elsewhere you can easily cancel the order.

I think in this case, temporarily out of stock means you're pretty much SOL if you want to order it from them--it's doubtful they are going to get anymore in. A lot of retailers use euphemisms such as 'Temporarily Out Of Stock' to give you a glimmer of hope and keep you coming back when in reality it means they don't have any now and they won't have any later.

I don't know what the big deal about this set is anyway. The movie itself wasn't great and the second disc in the set isn't anything to write home about either.

The best bet, I think, is to use BestBuy.com.  It will show you stock availability in various stores.  There was nothing close to me, but luckily I have friends all of the country and was able to get a copy from Miami where she said they had "tons" of them.

Well...I guess some people collect movies according to the 'package' as well as the 'movie' itself...

Certainly for me, I collect 'Gift Set' and 'Digipak' mainly because simply they are more attractive than a normal keep case...
