Movies on DVD question, for experts.
I am interested in getting a lot of the shaw brothers films as well as other chinese movies on dvd. I have a question though, what is the best version of films to get that are not cut, or change in some way? I obviously don't mind if they are restored and cleaned up.. but I hate to get something with parts missing and music being changed etc

I hear Tokyo Shock has good releases but very few? Dragon Dynasty seems good but are they? I am no expert so I'm not really sure. The releases in china seem good and are region 3, doesn't seem to be a big deal and I hear there is a ton of titles released there that I could buy.  What else is there, Image and well go?

Also, is there any websites with a list of definitve releases for these movies, and what to buy? That is still active???  Some websites I find have release lists but then some of them only list up to 2008 or so.

Your first stop for answers to questions such as these should always be dvdcompare.net. Wink I use it all the time.

I might get yelled at for suggesting it, but I think DVD Beaver ( www.dvdbeaver.com ) has a little bit of what you're looking for. Navigating the site is less than intuitive and reading white text on a black background makes for a great eye sore. Their library is somewhat limited too, but if you can find a movie you want on there, you'll be able to compare screenshots of different editions and their reviews will usually point out the differences between versions. At the end of each one, they usually put a little report card that points out which edition has the best Audio, Video, Extras, and Menus. Here is a Shaw Brother's review I found on there that you can take a look at: http://tinyurl.com/ydan3xt

And from what I've seen, Dragon Dynasty is a very reliable company. Their blu-ray transfers are never quite reference quality, but they always respect the source material and release movies in their original form.

thanks for the reply, it is good to know im not missing anything with dragon dynasty.  I will of course order many of the hong kong films as most of them are only avaiable there anyways.

the dragon dynasty release looks much shaper than that other, is there really that much of a difference?  Sucks only cause I know most of their films cant be had on DDs label.
