Considering that this is now a new product, I doubt they would have forseen this but of course you never know....It depends how they focus - if they simply change the wavelength of the laser, then it should only be a simple firmware change, as you have said before Adrian Happy

Maybe, but I would be quite surprised if that is true.  It's probably more of focusing the laser differently.  Who knows?  I certainly haven't looked at the spec.  If they are concerned about not pissing off early adopters, they would have made it this way.

It also means that if you bought a new HD-DVD player recently, it will not be compatible!

If the players were designed correctly, a simple firmware update is all that should be needed to play a new disc with an extra layer.

Slightly off topic I know but I finally got to look at both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players today. Maybe its just me but are Sony deliberately setting out to fail with this one? The Blu-Ray was TWICE the price of the HD-DVD player, and nowhere near as pretty. Couldnt judge quality as they werent connected to anything (go figure!)...which was a pity.
But if I was basing my choice on asthetics and cost...Sony wouldnt be getting my money. I'll be holding off for a while I think.

Any thoughts.....?

I can't see this being used for movies. I think it's more of a marketing thing. If it's more than vaporware then it will give HD DVD a boost in respect to the format's use in IT.
I'm sure they will - another case of waiting for the player that does both HD DVD and BluRay I spose.
The manufacturers should be careful how quickly they change these new formats due to the expensive upgrades that could be involved for the poor consumer...
Maybe future HDDVD players will be able to handle this new media. Glad I held of buying one
