Outlander Blu-ray (Canadian Release)
Just received my copy in the mail and thought I'd let folks who might be looking to import this from Canada in on a few details since The Weinstein Company is not releasing a Blu-ray version anytime soon in the U.S. and many of you may be looking to import the disc when it is released on May 26th.

The movie is NOT in the original theatrical aspect ratio. Alliance Films has made the terrible decision to put the movie on the disc at an aspect ratio of 1.78:1, not the film's original 2.35:1 aspect ratio.

I suspected that it might be a case of them putting a full frame presentation on the disc, but after comparing the Blu-ray to the DVD release I have found this not to be the case. Alliance has cropped the film on each side to make the 2.35:1 film 1.78:1 on the disc. Sampling the movie I wasn't too impressed with the video presentation--blacks just don't look as deep and rich as they should--and it's probably a symptom of them cropping and zooming the original image, or their encoding just isn't up to snuff with what I'm accustomed to from other Blu-ray discs. Still a step up from the DVD, but then again the U.S. DVD is in the correct aspect ratio.

On the plus side--even though no mention is made on the packaging--all of the special features from the U.S. DVD release are present--including all of the deleted scenes, animatics, galleries, and the audio commentary--and the audio is available in either DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 or Dolby Digital 5.1.

Reliable information about this disc has been hard to come by and I thought some of you might be interested to know what you're purchasing before it arrives in the mail from Canada. I'm not happy at all about the OAR foul-up, but the video quality of the Blu-ray is regardless a step up from the DVD version and I'm relieved that the special features from the DVD made it onto the disc.

Caveat emptor.

Alliance suck serious balls. Sin City and From Dusk Till Dawn aren't too bad, but they have a fairly long history of cocking up the OAR on their discs and generally being shoddy compared to the US releases.

I'd heard about some of their releases, but was willing to take a chance on this one seeing as it looks as if The Weinsteins are going the HD download route for now. If not for the aspect ratio I'd be happy with the disc seeing as it's not available here and it was under $20--it's just more annoying and disappointing than anything.

Oh no, i was gonna get the Canadian release, but that obviously won't be happening now. Thanks for the info. Might get the DVD though as it looks interesting.

Alliance BDs are barebones! (ex. Sin City, Freddy vs Jason, and I bet Blade(release date June 2, 2009 in Canada) and Outlander will be)

Outlander is not a barebones disc--although the packaging does not list any special features all of the features from the US DVD are on the disc.

Alliance has struck again, Chris...this time cropping your beloved Blade to 1.78:1 on their BD release coming June 2nd. I'll never be purchasing another disc from them solely on principle.

Heh, I dunno about beloved, but that is s**t. I'm not too bothered about extras as long as the price reflects it, but getting the OAR wrong is a major no-no.

Saw Outlander on DVD yesterday. It's a great film! Can't see why it wasn't shown in theaters. 40 minutes of deleted scenes + a cool compilation of VFX before and afer comparisons and the commentary. Will buy the UK or Swedish BD when it's released.
