Isn't the PS3 future proof, something to do with Profiles, 2.0 being the latest. I'm getting a PS3 anyway, for GTA4 but more importantly the Ghostbusters game coming late this year.
But it would be nice to have a Blu-Ray player that isn't going to be redundant in a year or so.

But it would be nice to have a Blu-Ray player that isn't going to be redundant in a year or so. Yep. That's exactly why I bought Region A PS3 - now it can do everything, okay it can't bitstream HD Audio, but I think I'm happy enough with LPCM decoding.
I was planning to buy Panny BD50 but well that was before DTS-HD MA came to PS3

It also does UPnP network streaming, so if you have a media server on your network with support for UPnP then you can use it to watch video, play music and look at your photo collection. Video support is surprisingly good given that it is Sony, ie DivX and XviD.

My G1 Xbox does that Still, if there's room in the budget I wouldn't say no.
