Discrete means that it has a dedicated sixth channel, whereas matrix means that the sixth channel is extrapolated from the read surround channels. Dolby Digital 5.1 EX is a matrix '6.1' system (i.e. it's not true 6.1), whereas DTS can be either matrix or discrete (but it is usually written as 6.1 regardless).
Technically, anyone referring to Dolby Digital 6.1 EX is wrong, because it isn't six discrete channels of audio (think along the lines of Pro-Logic). DTS is more of a grey area, it should be 5.1 for matrix and 6.1 for discrete, but the distinction is hardly ever made.

Neerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrd!
I do edit a DVD website you know. Girls of your age with an unhealthy interest in G1 Transformers and Superman: The Movie shouldn't be so quick to cast the first 'nerd' stone

Oh snap! I just don't think there's a comeback for that one...

Wow. Gotta sit back and see how this one turns out...
Can I say I'm glad that question was asked. I like learning more about Home Theatre and those little things you don't notice when you're operating your Home Theatre system. Sadly, I don't have a 6.1 or 7.1 receiver. I am happy with my 5.1 though. Maybe someday when I have my own place, I'll definitely have a dedicated room, big enough, and soundproof for a 6.1 or above system.

We must talk soon Mark, when you are ready I will talk to my contacts and see if we can get you something good....
that's a shame - i've noticed most of my 6.1 dvds are matrixed (according to dvdprofiler) I thought I was getting the good stuff too - mind you doesn't sound too shabby
Don't worry about missing out on any dvd that may have had extras on it and now no longer does. Its only a matter of time that those extras get re-issued again
I bought the 2-disc OOP dvd R2 with the matrix DTS-ES sound along with the making-of huuuuge book for £10 off eBay!

Does anyone know and wants to tell me what is the difference?
I already have a 6.1 capable home-theatre system at home.
