What are you using to play DVDs? Most playback programs allow you to take captures directly from the software. The probable reason it goes black is because you have hardware acceleration turned on.
I'm not sure if this helps.
I use this website for photos to use for 'Guess The Movie' game in a local internet forum.

It has lots of screenshots from movies old and new, and some of them (movies) even have screenshots directly from their DVD's.

If you don't have PowerDVD etc, download VLC Media Player and take the cap using that. You can save in a variety of formats. Windows Media Player is s**t for DVDs.
PowerDVD should come with your computer. I don't use anything else, I don't know why, I'm stubborn. I actually still use the PowerDVD 5 version. I used the trial for the latest one and I absolutely hated it. Tried to make screen captures and it'd cap the next frame instead.
PowerDVD doesn't come with all PCs. Why resurrect such an old thread?
T'urgh, what a n00b

Is there a FREE screenshot thing out there that doesnt do that and doesnt plaster watermarks over the image? If so: links please!
