Always wondered about this. Is it possible to put a seamless branching film onto a disc the other way? By that I mean can you put the extended version in its entirety onto the disc and use the branching system to skip the extended parts for the shorter 'theatrical' version?
Speaking as a lay person, I would think this would be more logical as it would mean the person doing the encoding would know the maximum amount of data needed for the longest version of the film and therefore be able to better use the disc space available to them to optimize the picture quality.
Is this thinking wrong-headed? Can both methods be used?

I pretty sure its when the film deviates to another part of the disc.
Example:
the future Lord of the Rings dvds will have both theatrical and extended versions on one disc.
The film will actually just be the theatrical version, the extended parts will be held on the disc as a separate thing - like deleted scenes. When it comes to the point in the theatrical film where an extended part is to be, the film jumps to this seperate part and then back to the film.
The seamless part is that you shouldn't notice it doing this.
