Lantana and RPF, along with Wale Rider are my mother's favorite films. You, sir, are a middleaged woman.Tongue
Mal
I do think Spirited Away is superior, but can't better Laputa because I saw it first. Happy

Changed my list a little, instead of Rabbit-Proof Fence, I've gone for Lantana.
Interesting choices Mal. I actually prefer Spirited Away to Laputa. Not to be confused with La Puta!, as in Tu Madre es la PUTA. I still haven't seen Rabbit Proof Fence or Shutter and if it weren't for my love of everything Peter Jackson (I think I've got to be the only person who looked forward to LOTR because it was a Jackson film, not because of the subject matter, which I knew nothing about), Whale Rider would havebeen on my list.

Korea: Oldboy
China: House of the Flying Daggers
Hong Kong: The Eye
Denmark: Dogville
Germany: Das Boot
Brazil: City Of God
Holland: The Vanishing
France: L'Appartement
Spain: Tesis
Czech Republic: Dark Blue World
Thailand: Shutter
Australia: Lantana
New Zealand: Whale Rider
Japan: Laputa

So many good films come out of Korea, eg Taegukgi, Tale of Two Sisters, Il Mare etc... was also recently reminded of Time Out, which is French (I think) after watching a documentary about the real event. Disclaimer: countries may be incorrect. Wink
UK: The Wicker Man
America: Godfather prt II
Canada: Scanners
France: Delicatessen, Betty Blue (original), The Vanishing
Germany: Das Boot
Hong Kong: Infernal Affairs
Japan: Battle Royale

I wouldn't class Crouching Tiger a 100% Chinese film as it was also financed by Taiwan / Hong Kong / USA as well as China.
America: Godfather
Canada: The Sweet Hereafter
China: Crouching Tiger
Czech Republic: The Loners
Denmark: Celebration
Finland: The Man Without A Past
France: La Double Vie de Veronique
Germany: Run Lola Run
Hong Kong: Project A Pt 2
Iceland: The Icelandic Dream
Japan: My Neighbor Totoro
Korea: Oldboy
Norway: Insomnia
Poland: Dekalogue
Russia: Burnt By The Sun
Sweden: Fucking Amal
Thailand: Ong Bak
UK: Secret Garden

Korea: Oldboy (Tale of Two Sisters and Save the Green Planet close seconds)

Japan: Ichi the Killer, Battle Royal, and Happiness of the Katukuris are all great, but got to go with Seven Samurai or Rashamon (or maybe even Akira)

France: Delicatessen

New Zealand: Heavenly Creatures and Braindead.

Italy: Suspiria or Once Upon a Time in the West

Spain: Devil's Backbone or Thesis

UK: The Third Man or The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover

Canada: Videodrome (yeah, it counts)

HK: Hard Boiled or Zu

China: Yeah, Crouching Tiger...

Germany: M or Run Lola Run

Brazil: City of God

Mexico: Amorres Perros

I'm drawing a blank for the rest. Most of those are pretty darn recent, but what'a ya gonna do?
Go on then people, what are your favourite World Cinema titles. Only one from each country.

Korea: Oldboy
Japan: Battle Royale
France: Amelie (although to be fair I've not seen a whole lot of French cinema - mostly Jeunet)
China: Crouching Tiger (again, haven't seen a ton of films from mainland China)
Hong Kong: Bullet in the Head (very tough call as there's loads of HK stuff I love. Mr. Vampire rules).

Tat's about as 'World' as I get. Bit sad really, but what's worse is that I watch a hell of a lot more World Cinema than most people...

Ive seen about 12 Korean films so far,
Old Boy was the best of this bunch. 2 1/4 stars
Buchimo, was about a 2 star film, and Shiri was about a 2 as well.

The rest were just God Awful, Im all for tring new films, from different countries, tey just ened to try a little harder.

I would say Danish Films are the best at the moment.

What sort of fucked up rating system is that? Anyway, Oldboy was fucking wicked; ten times better than most films to come out of the US. Bichunmoo isn't a great example of Korean cinema, as I think it must have confused the arse off of Koreans let alone anyone else. Musa is much better. Champion is another great Korean flick, but I wasn't as sold on Volcano High.

I'm going to pick up Sympathy for Mr. Vengence this weekend (well order it anyway), and I still have Brotherhood to watch. Korean films rule.
I'm not big on world cinema, so I vote for the good ole U.S. of A Wink

Canada has some decent stuff lately too.

I thought it was a reference to Guns 'n' Roses' drummer...
I misread this and thought it said "scrotum"
Maybe that's what they really should have called this movie....

Motorcycle Diaries was mostly an American production, filmmed in South America. Some of the actors were Mexican.

I've not seen this, but will say that Korean films are the best world cinema has produced for a few years now.

The scariest part of this film, is realzing it sucks and may never end!
God what a piece of shit
someone mustve owed some huge favors for crap like this to come out
its garbage even in korean films standards.
the only thing that is almost as bad as this is Return of the matchstick girl, another korean piece of shit.

Maybe they shuold only make movies like Old Boy. Thats the best i have seen from Korea, but even that film had lagging and dumb parts.
