Spielberg to remake Mary Poppins?
At least that is the current rumor.

Don't worry, it won't happen for a while... he still wants to remake Alice in Wonderland.
A rumor that was already debunked.
Matt's correct. A spokesman for Mr. Spielberg dashed that rumor quickly.
Pretty weak debunking from the Spielberg camp:
“I never heard of this and couldn't imagine Steven ever doing a remake of a classic - and a [Walt Disney] classic at that. There's a Broadway show from Disney but nothing involving us in any way.”

There are lots of crazy rumors floating around. It's pretty obvious which ones are bunk. Maybe some fools were just waiting for the new year to float them online?
Could be. I just noticed it while surfing IMDB the other day. It does seem rather far fetched. You would think that the Spielberg camp would be more definitive in debunking the rumor. "I couldn't imagine" is hardly a strong statement against the possibilty.
What they are saying is why try and fix something that isn't broken, i.e. why bother remaking an instant classic that is still watched by millions of children?
So it wasn't weak, it was pretty self-explanatory.

Exactly. And why, for instance go anywhere near re-visiting the children's (Disney) classic Peter Pan by making Hook?
I wouldn't be surprised if a remake was considered. They remade "King Kong" twice and still can't top the original. The fact a film has classic status has not hampered the studios from considering remakes. In many ways, a bad remake or sequel is a better bet financially than something unknown. Does anyone remember the failed attempt at a "Wizard of Oz" sequel? The film was called "Return to Oz" and it had as much charm as the bird-flu virus. However, I must say I enjoyed the recent live-action "Peter Pan." It was so much better than "Hook" and it captured much of the charm of the Disney animated classic. I was surprised it didn't fare too well at the box office. The more I think about it, maybe "Mary Poppins" could be remade as a comedy with Robin Williams in drag.... oh, nevermind, that's already been done.
When has Robin Williams ever been in drag.

Mrs. Doubtfire
Mrs. Doubtfire
What are you talking about? Robin Williams was in that film but top billing went to that old Scottish woman.
You are joking right?
I've just watched this again and you're right. The old woman IS Robin Williams. How does he do that? Did he win the Oscar that year because I honestly believed it was 2 different people.
I suppose next you'll be telling me the woman in Tootsie was really Sydney Pollack.
YES OF COURSE I WAS JOKING!

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound sarcastic or condescending. I honestly didn't know if you were joking or not. Again, sorry.
Don't apologise. I was rather leading you (or whoever) into a trap. 'Tis I that should be apologising.

Now I'm all confused...I always thought that Pollack played the Julie Nichols character and Bill Murray directed the movie. Geena Davis definitely played Tootsie though...
