Anyone tried to go to his site lately? Wink Out of interest, did you get an email telling you they were laserdisc rips offering the chance to back out?
Well I got them and the quality sucks. They're exactly the same as the ones I picked up at Dragon Con. I told that jerk they were on their way back to him and I expect a full refund because he is an absolute liar. I think I'll report him to ebay even if he gives me a refund just because he went to the extreme to make up such an elaborate bunch of bull****.

Chris
Shame on you rob!!

Piracy always equals POOR QUALITY!!!

Nothing beats the original within months, if not weeks of cinema release onto dvd!! Especially from Region 1!!

star wars 3 mistake
In the Mace Windu/Palpatine fight scene, the glass window is shattered after being hit by a lightsaber. However, while Palpatine is talking to Anakin after the fight, you can still see Anakin's reflection in the space where the glass was.Laugh
He just replied, and was quite blasé about it. Seems to think he's doing people a favour, and reckons he sends everyone an email telling them that they're laser disc rips and offering the chance to back out. Apparently it's our fault for posting the articles because they're in the 'public domain'. Same could be said of his pikey website.
I've just emailed the bloke who runs that site asking him to remove the links to my articles (traffic be damned). I'm not bothered about the legalities of his actions, but I hate to see people getting ripped off. he either complies or I report his arse to FACT and whoever else wants to know.
I didn't think FACT etc had any jurisdiction over auctions in terms of certification? It’s a private sale, not commercial. Bit wank if they do...
Mal
It's strange how you can get away with selling stuff like that.

I've never used eBay for selling but from what I understand they will pull anything they think is a pirate copy. Also if it's a UK based seller trying to get rid of a DVD that's not from the UK, then the auction can get reported by certain organisations for selling something unrated by the BBFC.
I love Ebay, its like a little Hong Kong right in my computer. As much piracy as anyone could want
Well let us know on what the set you bought is like.

I'm sorry Chris if I offended you, and I don't want to get in to a silly argument over the rights and wrongs of piracy either.

Not quite up to laserdisc quality if what I'm told is correct, but not far off. Take a look at the Star Wars articles he so generously linked to for examples.
Is the quality on these comparable to the quality one would get from the LD? If it is I'll probably be happy with it. I think the ones I got at the convention this year were transfered from a VHS copy, their very soft and the picture stops just short of the screen ends on both sides. YUK!!!

Chris
Well the quality isn't that bad, but nowhere near DVD quality. I got a set for £8, and that was all four discs (he hasn't sent you the bonus disc) and shipping from the US. Alright, so they don't have cases and artwork, but the content is the same.
Well $%#^*$, it looks like I've been had. Guess I should've researched it a bit before hitting the pay button. The guys feedback was good so I thought he was being honest. He did have a pretty good pitch though if one didn't know better. Oh well, to late to worry about it now, I can only hope that the quality is good. I purchased a set similar at Dragon Con this year and I believe my VHS copies actually look better. Happy

Chris
Yes, yes I do.

Just saw it. Do you think a polite word is in order?

I'm not going to get drawn into an argument about what may or may not have happened on another site. If I remember correctly, you started spouting off about piracy to a load of forum regulars in a ROTS thread, and they called you out over being a hypocrite. I had nothing at all to do with that discussion.
I remember that well too.

That makes me laugh Chris, when you and a few others on a certain site clearly and blatantly admit that they download TV shows and films that have not been shown in the UK, and feel that it's an okay thing to do.

Telling him to report him is sheer hypocrisy.

Now I'm not having a go at you, and I don't want to go in to go lengthy argument about it, as I've already had enough of that on another particular site.

I just wanted to stress the fact that you can’t tell somebody to report this person when clearly either you and the other people on a particular site does the exact same thing, even if it’s for your own personal use.

I can tell him to do whatever the fuck I want. I don't have a problem with him selling pirate DVDs - it's up to him if he wants to take the risk - but he is misleading people, taking their money and deserves to be reported to eBay for this reason alone.

Chris specifically said:
"I don't mind people selling them, but at least have the decency to tell people what they are."
He said nothing about having a problem with the pirated copies.

I think Matt may have a point...
I think someone is just feeling a bit burned by realizing that they paid $50 for this very same set. Wink

Hahahaha! I just looked at the posting now that I am home, can't acess eBay from work, and yeah, Chris is right, the auctioneer who posted this is a lying fuck! This version of the trilogy IS a laserdisc transfer, the text this guy balloons out on his site is taken word for word from the Definitive Collection laserdisc booklet, except he substitutes the word DVD for laserdisc. This transfer is widely known as 'The Dr. Gonzo' transfer.

Ah, shit Chris...did you notice he references your Star Wars changes article?!?!?!

Weren't the first studio release DVDs available in 97? How did these supposedly come out in 96? I don't mind people selling them, but at least have the decency to tell people what they are.

If you want these discs you can get them for peanuts (or even free) from fans of the OT.
You tell him, Chris.

What the auctioneer stated in his eBay posting is bogus; the original version of the trilogy has never been released on DVD. What you have gotten off of eBay is the 1993 laserdisc edition that has been transfered to DVD. There are numerous transfers of the trilogy floating around the convention circuit and the internet, so it is hard to tell which one you have won in the auction and what the quality will be like, some are decent enough and some are not, but more than likely the discs will be single layer and if you paid more than $5.00 for the set, the conservative cost of the raw DVDs and packaging material, you've been hosed.
Star Wars Definitive Edition DVD
Hi everyone, I'm new here and have a question. I just Won an auction on e-bay for what appears to be a legitimate DVD release of the original SW trilogy that was said to have been released for just a short time in 96, in Europe I think, just before Lucas decided he only wanted the SE available for the public. Since winning the auction I haven't been able to find a shred of info about this release anywhere. Here is the link. If anyone knows anything about this version please let me know, it appears legit but I'm getting a bit nervous. Thanks a bunch...Chris.

URL edited cause it was fucking up the layout.
