Some of you might have read this on The DigitalBits.com yesterday, but I thought I'd point it out for those that didn't. My own Children Of Men and The Good Shepherd HD DVDs did the exact same thing when played on both the XBOX 360 add-on drive and an HD-XA2 as they reported. In my case each film played through until about 70% in and then froze. After ejecting and inspecting the discs thinking that maybe a smudge or fingerprint was to blame but finding nothing, I placed the disc back in the player only to find that they were no longer recognized at all. My own communication with Universal hasn't resulted in much as they are apparently still looking into the problem. I'll pass on any updates as I get them.

From The DigitalBits.com:
We're still working to find out what's happening with Universal's DVD/HD-DVD Combo format versions of The Good Shepherd and Children of Men. We're having problems playing both titles here on our Toshiba HD-XA2, and we know others are experiencing problems as well (both on Toshiba players and the Xbox add-on drive). The specific problems we're having are that the HD-DVD side of the discs are either not recognized by the players (which occurs about 70% of the time), or when they are recognized, the discs stop playing about 3/4ths of the way through the film. We've contacted Universal, which is apparently in touch with Toshiba. Hopefully we'll know soon whether this is a disc replication or authoring problem (perhaps a bad batch of discs), or if it's a player issue that might be corrected with a firmware update.

Update: 24-APR-2007
Got word back from Universal on those problems with the HD DVD/DVD Combo versions of Children of Men and The Good Shepherd, and it seems as though they are going to allow folks to swap their defective discs in for new ones along the lines of what happened with Warner's Ultimate Superman Collection several months back wherein they sent you a prepaid envelope to return the defective discs in exchange for the corrected discs.
