It is usually a movie (usually an "art film" that can be good or bad film) that for some reason (usually money), the major companies didn't see fit to keep and release themselves. Criterion then buy the right to release the film on DVD (or other format) and then charges MUCH more than any other company.
Since they are usually the ONLY company that has the rights, you either have to PAY their HIGH price or forgo that film. Sometimes, they release a version and one is also available from another company at a very low price compared to Criterion.
Some people claim that the picture quality is superior to other companies, but I haven't found that to necessarily be the case.
I wish they (or any company) would finally obtain the rights to "Becket" (Paramount-Peter O'toole and Richard Burton) and finally make it available. I would "even pay" Criterion's price for it.

Criterion usually takes REALLY good care of their releases for movies that, under a different company, wouldnt give the time of day. even if they were to release the film they would never bother restoring the film as best as can be and throwing on tons of extras. I mean, come on, Equinox, an amature film that I never even heard of before seeing online (which got me to buy it) was a TWO disc set with two different versions of the film tons of extras AND a nice little booklet to top it off. And look at what they did with greats like Seven Samauri, giving it the three disc treatment the film more then deserves.
Also, I have yet to see any of their cover art any less then awesome.....well worth the price tag if you ask me, at least I know I am getting quality.
