Personally, I think they're fine, but I'm no expert on such things. I went with a JVC because my previous player was a JVC that I owned for 5 years, and was pretty reliable until it choked on a couple of discs. The newer player handled both of the discs in question with no problem.

Oppo make some decent region free, up-scaling, standards-converting DVD players, but you need to have the kit to work with them (HDTV).
How's the video and audio?
I bought a region-free JVC player from www.220-electronics.com four years ago. It's been pretty reliable.
'Ey. I'm planning on saving for a code-free DVD player, so that for once I can get a good release of a foreign movie. One special feature for a movie that got a two-disc release in Spain, my ass. I was talking about Rec there.
