The darker it is, the more believable sets and special effects become, and at the same time the cheaper it is to produce those.

IMO the Doctor Who series suffers from the opposite problem, it's so bright that special effects look naff.
Movie Lighting
Why are all the movies so dark? I have given up trying to watch new movies the lighting is just awful.
