When I first started collecting DVDs, I bought a used copy of "Minority Report" from Blockbuster. It played fine, I took care of it and stuff, but one day, it just stopped. This happens almost anytime I rent a movie from anywhere too. Anyways, I fixed it with something that cost me $5 Canadian. It's one of those "sealant" kits. My disc has worked perfectly ever scince. Although I've heard that these kits are hit and miss, they can work great in some cases, or cause more damage in others (although I've heard much more good than bad).

A polishing kit can be quite good if you get one that eats away the disk slightly to smooth the scratches out but you have to be real careful....
Buy a new copy. Easy peasy

I can barely understand how people buy more than 1 a month let alone some of the multiples per week. I've bought 3 new release DVDs this year (The Departed 2 Disc, Casino Royale, Children of Men) and it's already a quarter over.

I buy as many as I do because of the fact that I've got no life. I've got a 1 year old son, wife, and a 50 hour a week job. So, it's fairly easy to buy movies and stay at home like a hermit. That's part of my charm.

I feel for you on the 2nd child. I also have a mortgage, but it's a manageable figure.

My mortgage was manageable but then the wife left work to have and care for Alex (kid number 1) and now with the second one on the way we have lost our second income for a very long time...

That does suck. My wife just started work back up last week and I'm quite glad. I didn't want to have her leave the home for it, but whatever she wants to do. Good luck!
Thanks Franchise - Here in Australia we get a "baby bonus" which gives us approximatly $4000 AUD when we have a baby which helps with the Bills and hopefully will leave some money left over for a HD projector I want! True 1080p of course....
We get about the same here for a child on our taxes each year. I think it lessens the burden on us as a family. I can remember going from paying the extra taxes every year to bringing in about $3000.
We also get government support during the year after the bonus but it depends on how much you earn collectively (husband and wife) and as an individual. Usually it is not much though...

I've been noticing scratches on the used games I buy and older discs I own. Some of the movies will play to a point, begin to stutter, and go no further. Can anyone suggest methods or products for repairing DVDs with minor scratches? Do those cheap-looking "DVD Doctor" kits at electronic stores work at all?
