Especially the 200GB, 8 layer disc if it ever makes it out of the labs - bet that will require a further generation of drives to read/write.
I spose the best comparison is the price of single layer dvd blanks compared to dual layer dvd blanks....
If they can actually make their promises on the rewrittable (10,000 write cycles), then the price point for the 50GB rewrittable isn't really that bad. However, most computers won't be able to read them for awhile.
Are there even drives available yet?

Not yet, but they will be available late spring/early summer, though there is not word yet as to what price one of these drives will fetch. Sony recently posted details on a pretty well stacked, new VAIO package with Blu-Ray on their site with a retail price of around $2,300.
Suppose you could buy the Toshiba HD DVD player and pull the NEC drive out of it. There's also some unofficial HD DVD drives being sold at the moment, I guess Toshiba want all the drives so they can produce as many players as possible.
Ahh, those were the days.
This was all fields back then.
