This is shaping up to be DVD of the year.
Nice art, Although not that different from before, but I'm shocked that no features have been announced besides that in-fragment DOC. Not even a trailer- Get real!
This was an interesting good (but not great) movie, I've seen mainly 3/5 star reviews for this film and they are spot on. Much better than Crash (but it really doesn't take much to be better than that). Although there doesn't seem to be much point to this release.
I've heard great things about this movie and will probably pick it up, though I am disappointed that the "Special Edition" isn't all that special. I wish studios would treat great films as so and not deliver such mediocore dvds like this....
does this feel as bare bones as the original edition to anyone else?

Brokeback needs a SE now
I myself felt that Naomi Watts was the bigger driving force in 21 Grams.
I will agree that this and Brokeback deserve better treatment.
Now, Focus needs to remove that false "Collector's Edition" from the DVD case and think about what they've done.

I wish CRITERION was doing something with this film. FOCUS should just let them work on thier better films instead of having parent company Universal. Along with this film BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN desperately needs a great Special Edition DVD.

Pretty sad. I think I'll stick with the current version...
This film dserves more.
I loved this movie, and I'm glad they are releasing it again. It was a very moving movie when watching it on TV.
I wish Universal would licence the FOCUS FEATURE films to Criterion. This film along with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, MOTORCYCLE DIARIES, THE PIANIST, PRIDE & PREJUDICE, THE CONSTANT GARDENER, FAR FROM HEAVEN all deserved better treatment on DVD.
ok, so this sucks. there has to be a whole lot more on the disc if I wanna upgrade
I didn't have any plans to upgrade as this is a disc and a film I love for the movie only. So I am quite happy!
Wow, what a special edition! one special feature! Can't wait...
I'd say it's likely the SE has been dropped. If an actual SE comes it now won't be for some time :-|
I remember the director saying a long time ago that a special edition with commentary and stuff was in the works. I guess he either is A) still working on it and this is just a test by Universal to get people to double dip or B) the special edition was dropped all together.
Well...I do say I also remember Carlito's Way menus turning out to be the menus from the original release. While there's less of a chance this is happening again here, since the featurette wasn't on the old one, one can always hope that it's just another mistake and Universal's sent over Region whatever menus.
If the disc is only released with that 20 minute, In Fragment malarchy, I`ll just buy the original release which is now $10.00 cheaper. What kind of c**p is this Universal? At least throw in a few trailers before you go and declare a disc as a SPECIAL EDITION.
That's it? One bonus feature?
No trailers? No commentaries? No Santaolalla exclusive score track?
Pardon my French, but SCREW that.

Pardon my French, but SCREW that.
Throw on a trailer, commentary and deleted scenes and that would be enough to call it an SE in my opinion. Really, those four elements (that's including a making-of featurette) are all you need to make a reasonably satisfying DVD.
How is one single 20 minute featurette enough to consider this DVD release a Special Edition. That is rediculious. Universal is loosing it. This is a bare-bones release.
Maybe they just should have released a desent DVD the first time!
LOL they think this is a Special Edition? It's getting the ONLY freakin' extra that Europe and Australia got from day 1.
Give us a proepr Special Edition! :-| . Amores Perros got loads of extras including a Director commentary.
Quote: Unfortunately we're not too sure what that is right now - but we'll try and find out!
Check out any R2 review. It's decent enough and lasts 18 minutes:

Couple of menus added...
i agree wholeheartedly w/tony, particularly if one puts the more restrained betty/diane mulholland dr performances as book ends to 21g. (or throw in the more restrained we don't live here anymore, ellie parker, & king kong in there.) I also agree that any other year naomi would have won best actress. compare w/reese's supporting joaquin this year, for example.
i also think that too many people think about the 3 short times naomi/cristina screamed (when she mixed booze & chemicals & ran into the suv in front of her, when she discovered paul/sean had been stalking her, & when she discovered that jack/benicio had left her daughter to die after he had hit her). compare that w/laura dern's selfish & recurring screaming in we don't live here anymore--cristina lite.

It's about time. The only reason why I don't own it yet is because since the barebones was released I have heard rumors of an eventual special edition.
I was hoping for 2-disc set too. Aw well....

What is most surprising is how long it's taken.
Have to agree. Was hoping for a 2 disc set on this one. I`ll be waiting for the reviews when this comes out, but more likely than not, I`ll be getting this one

I registered simply to agree with this, man.

Saw parts of it. Loved Naomi's... you know!
Finally! How long have we been waiting for this. Too long in my opinion.
this is a great upgrade, the other day I was watching the one I allready have and thinking "damn, they have to realese a special edition for this film" I love 21 grames, and I hope the films like this one, amorres perros, and el crimen de padre amaro get what they desrve!
This is am amazing movie and I will pick up the Special Edition frist day! Benicio Del Torro, Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, and all the rest of the cast were increadible. A miracle of a movie!
Altmanesque? Is that a joke?

Crash is similar to Altman? That's got to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.
Haven't lived much, eh? Crash is very similiar in structure to a good many Altman films, like Short Cuts, Nashville, etc. I can't be the only one that thinks that.
Simon Abrams wrote: Oh you were calling Crash the best non-Altman film?
Agree to disagree.
Magnolia was okay. Just not that effective, for me. I did believe at the time that Tom Cruise should have won best supporting actor. It's been awhile since I've seen Magnolia. Maybe it is time for a re-viewing.

Magnolia is the best Altman rip-off
This film is really overrated but Benicio Del Toro is great, too arty for no reason

Son of a...I just bought this the other day because I was sure -- SURE -- that Universal had totally forgotten about it and if there was gonna be an SE coasting off its awards (as rumored) that didn't happen, then why would it happen now? Luckily, I only spent four dollars on it, and it was kinda scratched.
Maybe I should go buy a whole bunch of copies of Adaptation so that Sony can finally pull that special edition out of its ass.

Finally, I have been holding off on the current release for a long time. I remember there being talk about a special edition when it came out, glad to see they are going through with it. This is no doubt influenced by the fact that Iñárritu's new film Babel has a very good chance and winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year.

FINALLY!!! They give so many c**ppy movies bonus editions, but this movie deserves a nice treatment. Such a heavy movie, I have a lovely poster of Naomi and the saying, "how much does love weigh" in my room. I hope they don't get it some weird edition name though can you imagine..."21 Grams the Like Totally Depressing Edition" or "21 Grams the Dying Mathematician, Former Drug Addict, Born-Again Christian Edition!" lol
Wow, didn't see this coming. This is one of my favorite films of all time and includes, in my opinon (I'll probably get a lot of c**p for this), the best female peformance ever on the silver screen.

Amores Perros is much better.
I like 21 Grams but not as much, but in terms of Sean Penn's performance, I think he's better in this than in "Mystic River."

Two sensational performance from Penn that year; 21 Grams and Mystic River...
I also thought Naomi Watts was top notch in this movie and would have won the oscar if not for Charlize...
Agreed that this movie neeeds a new 'special edition'...
