Dances of Wolves and now this poor DVD? What's going on with Sony? Maybe they want to wait till they get Blu-ray on the shelves and release the double-dips via Blu-ray only?

My best, educated guess is that this has to do with the switch over to Fox handling MGM titles on home video for region one, so it may reappear on Fox's release schedule at a later date.
As I whined in the other thread...when it returns, hopefully it does so with better cover art.

I'd say that's a safe bet. The Bond re-releases are so close to release date it would be stupid to stop those now but any further MGM/Sony re-releases are no longer coming.

This is a stupid decision. This Special Edition is already released in Australia and UK, under it's MGM Gold Editions.
I was really looking forward to this. John Cleese is a comic genius and the bonus features that were supposed to be on this would only make his genius in this film even better. I even been holding out to buy this instead of the $10 movie-only edition that I keep finding on the MGM bargin shelf at almost every store I've been to. Now I'm confused, should I buy the current single disc version or wait in hopes of a new SE, maybe once Fox takes over MGM.
WTF!?!?!
(growl of frustration)
Every time it gets this (holds fingers slightly apart) close, it gets bumped, or CANCELLED!!!
Lets hope FOX has this on their slate, and soon!
And yes, with better cover art. Theatrical poster anyone?
Heck, my old VHS release was through FOX, and that is what they used back then!
This may tie "Ed Wood" for the longest announcement-to-release time frame. Unless anyone can think of another?
PS - this is my 100th post. Mini-wave in honor of me!
I know, pretty lame. Sorry.

Could care less about the Dances With Wolves cancellation because this was the biggest casualty of all. 1st Sony delays this release the 1st time and now they just cancel it. If you don't mind.......
Sony, go f**k yourselves!

The James Bond and Pink Panther series titles were not a part of the licensing deal with Fox and will remain with Sony. So even if it wasn't close to the release date Sony would still have the Bond discs.
I don`t care about the DWW cancellation either, but I`m mad this got cancelled. It`s a great film that needs a 2 disc treatment, but I`ll be happy if I have to wait for Fox to release it just as long as it`s not cancelled all together (crosses fingers).

Yeah, you're absolutely right. I completely forgot about the switchover.

You could? I'm sorry for your loss.

Again for the second time!Jesus!
I was really looking forward to this one. Count me among the "Crossing My Fingers for Fox" group.

No big deal. I love Dances With Wolves, it's one of my all-time favorite films. Wanda though deserved a much better release on dvd.

I was gonna pick this up. If Fox does decide to release it, it probably won't be as good an edition- Sony is usually better when it comes to special editions and that sort of stuff, and Fox has the edge in TV sets. (Sony's single-disc releases are some of the finest I've ever seen- 'Zathura' and 'Once Upon a Time in Mexico' are now my benchmarks for single-discs. Their boxsets aren't bad either, like 'Indiana Jones' and whatnot.)
The cover art from Fox is... unique to say the least. The extras look good as well.
I wonder if anyone has gotten their hands on the Sony release of this title, considering that the people at The Digital Bits did before Sony yanked them from inventory.

great cover..and great film....any chance for this in R2 ??
I own the SONY/MGM release, and regarding this re-release that is the slipcover they have pictured there and not the real artwork which features just about the same headshots as the canceled edition. This is identical in terms of content to the SONY/MGM dvd.
Now cancelled for the third time!!!
Another good movie I do not own. Maybe one day I will be able to pick it up.
The artwork for the inner packaging has now been added in addition to the slipsleeve artwork. Currently only the bilingual version of the artwork has been made available.
This cover is, thankfully, a zillion times better than the Sony artwork, which looked more like Sex in the City or some other bad, hip sitcom than a classic 1980's comedy film with John Cleese.
Also, it seems this ISN'T identical to the Sony disc, because I'm pretty sure the Sony disc had no theatrical trailer. Hooray for 20th Century Fox on all counts!
