Just got the BD and it's the 2001 dub.
I have the excellent Pioneer Black tin edition - can't wait for the reviews....
Yeah, I get that! I just thought the original dub had such hideous dialogue and awful, goonish performances from what sounded like the worst Voiceover artists in America that it was unwatchable. As I say, I started with the subbed version, so I don't have any emotional connection to the first dub. Thankfully!

I really didn't like the 2001 English redub. Sure it's a little closer translation wise but it's full of "stating the obvious" lines and it generally sounds wrong to me. Usually I'm quite the original Japanese dialogue purest but Akira was my first proper venture into Anime and that '88 English dub feels so much part of the experience that without it somethings missing.
I still remember getting the Japanese-language VHS double pack for Christmas in the early 1990s! Loved the film, but the white on white subs were awful. Then I heard the English dub and was very glad of the subtitles!! I bought the black cover DVD set later and discovered I rather liked the different English dub on that one. I also truly fell for the film at that point!
This is a must-buy for me!

Not out until the 30th of May over here. Whether we review it depends on whether we get a check disc.
Is that so? Well...I guess I'm not the sound purist type. I always wanted movie's track to be updated to be better. More so in the new format like BD. But, I still respect movie's original tracks like in King Kong (1933) & Gojira.
Btw, when will DVDactive review Evangelion 2.22? It's been out in a while now.

What I meant is that the original audio mix is never obsolete. Offering a 5.1 soundtrack is all well and good, but far too few discs offer original audio tracks (especially in Europe).

Mr. Gould, I'll respect the stereo 2.0 If it's really the original sound mix. Like I said in my post, I don't mind it being additional track. I can say it's obsolete if THAT stereo is the only J-track available in this BD coz the earlier BD release in 2009 by Honneamise has English & Japanese Dolby True HD 5.1 Surround Sound along with Japanese PCM 2.0 & Japanese Dolby Digital 5.1. Unfortunately, that earlier release is barebone. And of course, I'm with you in hoping that it will get lossless format.
And chip 75, yeah, it'll be great if that black bottom is only the cardboard sleeve. I'm a little worried about the picture too. The earlier BD released by Honneamise did a good job cleaning up the picture. I really hope Manga can do the same or even better job.

I am hoping that the english subs r the original japanese dialogue subs unlike the VHS subs which were only HoH english subs!

I think the black bottom is the cardboard sleeve the Steelbook comes in. I wouldn't mind getting this if the transfer is perfect but Akira has never looked perfect. Looking forward to the reviews.

Can anyone tell me WHY they are still using the obsolete stereo 2.0 for the Japanese track? It's okay if they include the stereo as a side-track, but that's not the case. I know some releases from Japan of this include AT LEAST 5.1 Surround Sound. It's too bad that the J releases are void of English subtitle. As for the English track, I'm not really a fan of it. I've listen to it but still prefer the J-track.

Please let the "English Stereo 2.0" be the original dub as an option. That 2001 redub is just NOT Akira.
