Well, it was Warner Brothers that gave Stone the green light and he decided go back and look at the film again (for a final time…really!). We can choose to rent it, buy it or ignore it, plain and simple (I know I will definitely be buying this one).
It's a flawed film, but an ambitious project. I give kudos to Stone for making the effort.
I am one who is glad to see a new version (I have the other 2 versions already). I know that there were more to both battles (especially the second one in the film) and that should be included. I am not sure what else is included in the film, but I will absolutely give this one a try.
Who cares, you make a movie showing his bisexuality then get cold feet and cut it all out in your shorter Directors cut? Now another f**king version, Make up your Mind Oliver Stone, I can see one directers cut, but 2? You should have had a spine and given your intended Direters cut the first time on DVD not some watered down utah video store version.
Too many other movies that need a proper DVD release and they give us the same s**t over and over again, you can put this next to your 5 copies of SCARFACE, lol.

I don't own any cut of this film yet, so I'll pick up this release. I actually enjoyed the theatrical cut so I'm interested to see what oliver Stone has done on the third time around. Great artwork too.
I liked the theatrical cut, so I'll definitely buy this.
I feel a bit sorry for Oliver Stone.
What's next? "Alexander: The Five Hour Super-Duper Re-Extended Unrated Director's Cut?" ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!
You did redeem yourself a tad bit with "World Trade Center" Mr. Stone but please let this film go & let someone in the future make a better version of boredom.

*sigh* (waits for "super duper extended directors female dog cut" )
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEW! The artwork is soooo ugly! That's just my opinion though
.
I held off on Alexander due to them supposedly not exploring the gay theme enough so that it actually made sense, and of course because it got such bad reviews. But if this new version can fix this I'm kind of interested in seeing it. The extremely long running time is a bit of a turn-off though and it would likely take me forever to get through it considering I'm not into historical epics in the slightest (still haven't watched Troy, though that looked terrible). Still, someday I wouldn't mind seeing this though. If only it had included two tickets to 300, then I'd have just bought it.

Let me get this straight..... WHAT?
Is this film even more homophobic than the last two? Oh, gawd, what a mockery of one of the most important figues in world history. This film was nothing more than a steaming pile. I feel embarrased for Oliver Stone.
The Final Cut? Are you sure about that Mr.Stone? Give it up already, this movie had potential, but ultimately failed. I'll be interested to see if this pulls a Kingdom of Heaven with its director's cut, but I don't think so.
Edit: Wait, it comes with a 300 ticket? Maybe it's worth it if I see it for like 15 bucks. Even then, I'll have to think about it though.

No mention of new or extended battle sequences, so I kind of doubt it.

Is that not in the Directors Cut?

So might this new version not fix this for you? It may not be so pointless after all.

he's certainly convinced he has a masterpiece on his hands. and he must recut it over and over so that everyone eventually agrees that Alexander is totally awesome. I haven't even seen it, only bits and pieces of the DC but the irish accents all around perturbed me to no end.
possibly the coolest cover art i've seen though.

This could no wait a minute SHOULD have been the next Gladiator.
What went wrong well:
1-Casting, apart from Jolie everyone was miscast. I got no beef with Colin (he's a dude) but Bale could have ben cast in this.
2-I know Stone wanted all the male actors to fit in with Colin with an Irish accent but it really spoilt it, I mean every time they spoke I kept thinking of Father Ted and Dougle shouting 'Ted we forgot our bricks' in irish.
3-Why have a film about a man for 3 hours who most known for winning battles and only have 2 of them in the fecking film (granted the two battles were awesome) but come on no one wants to know wether he was a s**tstopper or not.
I can't see 45 mins saving this pile of arse, Kingdom Of Heaven has been blessed with a director's Cut coz we knew that all the important story points had been missing via the studio. Stone leave it alone. WORST FILM OF 2005 PERIOD!

Hated this movie and 45 mins. MORE!!!....God
As much as I try to like Stone's work, I appreciate only a few of his 80's films, like Platoon and Wall Street. The rest, I feel they miss the mark, IMO. I think he's a litlle bit overrated.
This film is a cinematic disaster, although I wouldn't go as far as calling it a "stinkfest". But, look at all the creative talent behind this flick. What the hell were they doing? Where did they go wrong? This could have been a great film for ages to come, even required viewing in the next decades, alas Ben-Hur or The Ten Commandments. We are talking about Alexander The Great!!! The greatest conqueror in ancient history!!!
By the way, what's up with the new trend that underachieving films, critically and box-office wise, get an UNRATED DIRECTOR'S CUT SPECIAL EDITION. Does adding an extra hour of footage automatically makes it a better movie? Hardly, with exceptions such as Kingdom of Heaven, but for every exception, there are loads of overblown, extremely long, bloaded films, where everything that was found was dumped into it.
In the end, I'm sorry, but I'm definitely skipping this. Let's hope somebody takes over on the future and makes a good retelling of Alexander's life.

Oh! I was waiting for this edition so much, I just need more of "Alexander", so I ´m so happy with this new DVD, no matter longer it is, the art is weird but the movie I hope so could be better than director´s cut (without Heph scenes, so sad :-S) I hope to watch more of Hephaestion in this new edition. No more Bagoas, please! XD XD Thanks Oliver the slash girls are so happy! ^__^ A/H !!!

I could do with some special features. A nice revealing doc about the trial and tribbles that the film-makers went through. Or even better, a historical doc that compares and contrasts the historicity of the film. As well as a historical overview, perhaps as well a sociological discussion. The Greek (misnomer) society was so different, quite counter-intuitive, to our society. It's hard to understand them. Easier to dismiss the Greeks with a well-manicured hand and go back to blithely consuming Paris Hilton's latest offering.

I would like to check out a version of this someday as I've heard it's a laugh. As for it bombing because it had homosexual stuff in, I think that's rubbish as Brokeback Mountain proved just a year later, and as stuff like Queer as Folk has amply proven over here already. I personally think it was more about these guys being Irish more than the homosexual stuff. Not being racist or anything, but to deliberately have them as Irish when they're meant to be classic historical figures from Greece... just a bit strange to me and to everyone else from comments I've heard.

I'm pretty happy about this! I never bought this movie, and I wanna see 300. It's a win-win!
Oh, my God!!! Oliver, give it a rest, it's like he's beating a dead horse until he liquifies the carcass!
I feel sad that Oliver Stone's name would be on this corperate exploitation. I wouldnt mind buying a "director approved" version if I knew that cut came from the heart of the director. What cut is this one. The "we didnt make enough on this movie so we have to try to get you to buy another version" version?
one word: Pathetic!
Well said.
I love DVDs. Say what you will about triple-dips or quadruple-dips (in the case of Highlander and Independence Day), but DVDs have given film-makers the opportunity to recut, rearrange, reconfigure their films. True, there exists darker consequences to this possibility (as in the aforementioned examples of releases), but if it was not for DVD, could we have had two Exorcists: The Beginnings? Or a Kingdom of Heaven extended edition? Or Lord of the Rings? Putting the Lord of The Rings on VHS or Laserdisc would have been cumbersome, tiresome and without the quality of DVD.
I will be either renting this or purchasing it. Perhaps... both?

OH MY GOOOD!!!!!! I actually had a premonition about this. I really hope for a R2 release
I thought Alexander was extremely underrated, but I won't buy it again. Might rent it to see what the changes were.
Why?
I absolutely love that cover! So cool! I haven't seen this, so maybe i'll get it based on the nice artwork.
Eww.
I can agree on Kingdom of Heaven's director's cut though.

No offence but have you seen the director's cut? As this rumour I've heard before is completely wrong. There are no more or less homosexual undertones in either cut. The biggest change his big parts of the film being messed around with and reordered.
I didn't care for Stone's decisions at all.
Also remember the homosexual undertones were (in Western countries anyway) only ever an issue in America. I didn't read or hear won complaint in the UK or even the rest of Europe about the lead being gay.
The fact is Stone is a bit obsessed with this film and can't understand why most don't "get it" too. I personally like the Theatrical Cut so it's a "bit" of a shame for me if this is based on that.
jjohnson1017 wrote: I'm guessing this one will include the full theatrical version, plus add in the footage from the shorter DC (the original DC was eight minutes SHORTER than the theatrical version and had something like 19 minutes of extra footage), plus add in a few more of the deleted scenes.
That wouldn't work at all. The DC is not just the TC minus 8 minutes, the plot has been moved all over the place.
Seeing as Stone clearly prefers the DC going by his commentary I suspect it's the DC which this will be based on.

Wouldn't that be sweet. The KOH DC is conciderabelt improved over it's mess of a Theatrical Cut. It's gone from an average to fantastic film.

This will be a must buy as I have loved all of the so called 'sword and sandal' epics of recent years, and this was no exception. It's a fascinating period of our world history.

Nice cover, the blue is a bit odd though.
I too will be picking this up. I still reckon a few saw it and the rest jumped on the bandwagon. Sure it has problems (Angelina Jolie is supposed to be Coln's mother for example) but it's far from a bad film. The battles alone make it worth it. They're outstanding.
I thought the Original Theatrical Cut was very good but Director's Cut or I guess we should call it the Original Director's Cut (this Final Cut now being the Director's Cut) Stone messed around with far to much and I didn't care for it.
Any news if this is based on the Theatrical or Director's Cut? I'm presuming the latter.

boring...

I've hated every version of this movie. It's so bad it needs three versions to sell.Troy and even King Arthur was better than this.Troy was mediocre and King Arthur was horrible but not as bad as this.I doubt a new 45 min could save it.

Full Press Release:
Quote: Burbank, CA, December 18, 2006. At last, audiences can experience Oliver Stone’s Alexander as he meant it to be seen, with Alexander Revisited: The Unrated Final Cut , available on 2-disc DVD February 27. Featuring more than 45 minutes of never-before-seen footage, the spectacle of Alexander is even more impressive with this all-new unrated version which brings the film to a heightened level of realism and intensity. Containing an introduction by Oliver Stone, the title will sell for $24.98 SRP. Orders are due January 23. HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc versions will be released later in the year.
The new introduction to Alexander Revisited: The Unrated Final Cut DVD reflects Stone’s passion and attention to detail in getting this film exactly the way he envisioned. Says Stone, “Over the last two years I have been able to sort out some of the unanswered questions about this highly complicated and passionate monarch -- questions I failed to answer dramatically enough. This film represents my complete and last version, as it will contain all the essential footage we shot. I don’t know how many filmmakers have managed to make three versions of the same film, but I have been fortunate to have the opportunity because of the success of video and DVD sales in the world, and I felt if I didn’t do it now, with the energy and memory I still have for the subject, it would never quite be the same again. For me, this is the complete Alexander, the clearest interpretation I can offer.”
Alexander grossed $167M worldwide during its initial theatrical run and previous DVDs have sold nearly 3 and a half million units to date, but Alexander: Revisited promises to be a whole new experience for audiences. Now restructured into two acts with an intermission, Alexander: Revisited is an epic of filmmaking in the manner of such cinema classics as Lawrence of Arabia and Gone with the Wind. Oliver Stone, one of cinema's most prolific innovators, and the recipient of three Academy Awards®, has directed such unforgettable films as Platoon, Wall Street, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, The Doors, Natural Born Killers, Nixon, Any Given Sundayand his most recent, the moving drama World Trade Center
Alexander: Revisited takes a bolder, more in-depth look at Alexander’s (Colin Farrell) life and his relationships with his mother, Olympias (Angelina Jolie), his father Philip (Val Kilmer), his lifelong friend and battle commander Hephaistion (Jared Leto), Roxane, his ambitious and beautiful Bactrian wife (Rosario Dawson), and his trusted general and confidant Ptolemy (Anthony Hopkins). The new film intensifies the beauty and unbelievable brutality of Alexander’s pre-Christian world of social customs and morals so different from todays.
The superb cast also boasts Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and many more.
Torn by the war between his parents (Jolie and Kilmer), Alexander left Greece to face massive armies in Persia, Afghanistan and India -- and was never defeated. "Fortune favors the bold" and Alexander was bold enough to command vast armies when he was just 25 years old. In the end, Alexander would face incredible battles that would re-shape the world as known today. A sweeping story of the greatest conqueror in history, this timeless saga comes alive with intense battle scenes, exotic locales and dramatic intrigue. It’s a searing moviemaking achievement that the Chicago Tribune called “vast, riveting and madly audacious,” while Gannett News Service hailed it as “a Hollywood rarity – a story of passionate people told with genuine, unadulterated passion.”
The DVD release date of Alexander: Revisited is timed to leverage audience anticipation of ‘300,’ the action-packed theatrical release from film and comics visionary Frank Miller. Every DVD unit of Alexander: Revisited will include a movie cash offer (a $10.50 value) for ‘300.’
In theaters March 9, 2007, ‘300’ is the story of a legendary, warrior-filled battle for Sparta, set in the ancient world. Frank Miller commands a legion of fans himself for such works as Sin City and the graphic novel Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, among many others.
