Fox Home Entertainment has sent over details for the release of Alvin and the Chipmunks, which will be released April 1st on both standard DVD and Blu-ray.
The DVD release is presented on a flipper disc featuring both full screen (1.33:1 aspect ratio) and widescreen formats (1.85:1 aspect ratio) with English 5.1 Dolby Surround, Spanish and French Dolby Surround with English and Spanish subtitles. Special features will be the Chip-Chip-Hooray! Chipmunk History and Hitting the Harmony featurettes and an Inside Look at Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who. Suggested retail price will be $29.98
The Blu-ray release will be presented in widescreen format on a 25GB single-layer disc authored in AVC (MPEG 4) compression with English 5.1 DTS HD Lossless Master Audio, Spanish and French 5.1 Dolby Digital plus English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and French subtitles. Bonus content will include a digital copy for download, a Chip-Chip-Hooray! Chipmunk History featurette, a Hitting the Harmony featurette, and several high definition trailers. Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray disc is set at $39.98.

In an updated press release from Fox Home Entertainment it appears that they have canceled the two-disc special edition that had been previously announced. The Inside Look at Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who feature previously available only on the two-disc edition has been added to the single-disc release.
The two-disc special edition was to feature the film in its original widescreen format (1.85:1 aspect ratio) with English 5.1 Dolby Surround, Spanish and French Dolby Surround plus English and Spanish subtitles. The special features were to include a digital copy of the film for download, a Behind the Nuts Munkumentary featurette, a Chip-Chip-Hooray! Chipmunk History featurette, a Hitting the Harmony featurette, the music video for "Witch Doctor", two exclusive iTunes® music downloads – “Get Munk’d (DeeTown Remix)” and “Get You Goin’ (DeeTown Funk Remix)”, and an inside look at Horton Hears a Who. The suggested retail price was to be set at $34.98.

Actually, for Christmas, they did releaes the 2-disk edition. The only difference is the 2-disk does not include the Chip-Chip-Hooray! Chipmunk History featurette or the Hitting the Harmony featurette.

Wow. I didn't really like the Digital Copy idea of the film in the first place, but I would pay to see extras - that is if I did like the movie? Hopefully, some of the extras will be on the one-disc.
Shame they didn't cancel both releases...

That's Fox for ya. Given their track record with double dips, the cancellation of the 2-disc set couldn't be more blatantly obvious. Ah well, the "Chipmunk History" featurette is the only thing I would've been interested in anyway on the second disc.
Guess I'll be passing on the "first" release & wait for the inevitable 2 discer in 6 months or so.
By canceling the 2 disc, Fox is pretty much saying that they'll double dip in late 2008 or early 2009. Fox is really dumb man. That was not smart.

I am a 34 year old hip-hop head who grew up watching horror movies and I got sucked into the cuteness factor of this movie...I wont say it was a good movie...but they were just so cute, you couldnt hate on them. Its like seeing a cute baby do something stupid....the baby is just that much cuter.
Is there really a need to waste a disc just for a digital copy? I really don't understand the logic. Anyway, don't even get me started on how absurd it is that this trash movie made 200mil+ domestically when so many other great films have barely made a quarter of that. What moviegoers were thinking I have no idea...well actually they weren't thinking.
I'd hold off on the DVD buying for those planning to get the movie -- this is all part of Fox's grand scheme to get consumers to double-dip on this title six months after these editions hit shelves. One can tell by how meager the extras are -- no commentary or deleted scenes for that matter.
Yeah, the 2-disc edition isn't even worth the money. I'd recommend a rental until Fox brings another, better version out to cheat the consumers out of their money.

The one disc special features are okay. Not too much not too little. According to how much the 2-disc has. But I would really like to see better artwork. I mean couldn't they just use a black background because a lot of DVDs have white backgrounds. And the 2-disc has good features but I wish that it would have more. It's so much better than that c**ppy I am legend (2-disc) extras. That's for sure.

I heard that this film was surprisingly good. It was NOTHING like the Garfield movies. Although in the cover art, Jason Lee looks like a 12 year old.

This film was a box office smash. Kids must have really dug it enough to make their parents see it twice. So that means this film is a major success and obviously doesnt need to worry about catering to film snobs who were expecting No Country for Old Chipmunks.... or There Will Be Munk.
One thing's for sure--kids love this movie and that really is the intended audience. My son has been pestering me since I took him to see it in the theater wanting to know when it was coming out on DVD so he can undoubtedly watch it over and over and over again.

Pretty good for the first 25 minutes or so...it had some potential. Then it just went downhill and became really stupid. Not really worth a rental, either.
