An Inconvenient Truth for Schools (US - DVD R1)
Teachers can claim one of 50,000 free DVDs of this documentary via a website
50,000 copies of An Inconvenient Truth are being given away to teachers in the United States via the participate.net website between 18th December 2006 and 18th January 2007. As a form of validation, those applying for the DVD will have to enter their school's nine-digit federal tax ID number and delivery will take approximately 6-8 weeks. This offer has been arranged by the following: Paramount Vantage, Participant Productions and The Environmental Media Association.
"Since the film debuted, we have received hundreds of emails from teachers interested in using An Inconvenient Truth in their classrooms to educate students about global warming. I am thrilled that we are able to give away these DVD's through the generosity of individual citizens who are underwriting this effort and I hope it helps inspire and move a generation towards solving this urgent problem," said Laurie David, a producer of the film.
Paramount Home Entertainment released Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth on 21st November 2006. This title is, "a passionate and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress by revealing the truths about it." The DVD is presented in widescreen with English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround and Dolby Digital 2.0, whilst subtitles are provided in English, French and Spanish. In terms of extra features this release contains: an update by Al Gore, a Melissa Etheridge music video for "I Need to Wake Up," an audio commentary by director Davis Guggenheim and a second commentary by producers Lawrence Bender, Scott Burns, Laurie David and Lesley Chilcott.
“An Inconvenient Truth has ignited a national movement to make the public aware of the effects of global warming and how each of us can contribute to the solution. By providing access to this film together with curriculum support materials for educators, we intend to support our teachers, advance the study of environmental science and contribute to a new generation of environmentally-conscious citizens," said Jim Berk, CEO, Participant Productions.

E-mailing this to my father, but I'm guessing he bought himself a copy already. He loves Gore, read all his environmentalist books, and happens to be a teacher...of course, his "At Risk Students" job was deleted thanks to "No Child Left Behind"....kind of strange and ironic. I'm not sure if this falls under the catagory of Social Studies.

Well, considering the demographic (read: sheep) that this documentary is aimed at, I guess the studio is doing this as an act to get rid of 50,000 copies of this left-wing piece of propaganda.
But of course, it's ashame that this documentary wasn't made in 1975 when the global environmentalists were warning us all about the cooling globe, and ironically, their solution was to intentially melt the polar ice caps! Yes, you heard me right....don't believe me? Look it up in a 1975 Newsweek...and Newsweek is hardly a right-wing "rag".
So don't look at me all buggied-eyed when I say I don't believe half of this global warming shiite. Something tells me that the environmental movement is just trying to cook up s**t for us to worry about so that they can keep their non-real jobs.
Oh wait...to quote the write-up above:

You are absolutely right, scientists should have to stick to claims they made 30 years ago. Continued research is bad for the planet. And polution isn't bad, it's good because it means people are working, and trying to reduce polution would be painful, and downright un-American.
Also, curse those liberals for cooking up stuff for us to worry about. You'd never see a conservative do that. Now if you'll excuse me, it's threat level orange this week, so I'm staying inside just incase those non-specific, general threats are accurate.

Having finally seen this film, I was actually surprised at how reserved it is. It stays well away from the more speculative areas, so I don't see it as something controversial. I bet it's very close to how the subject is covered in geography and science classes at the moment.
I somewhat agree with Lincoln6Echo in terms of special interest groups influencing education, but I assume the education system has some sort of curriculum in place as a safeguard? That should prevent groups from manipulating subjects beyond consensus...

And you'd assume that private investors and companies wouldn't have sway over what was taught in schools.
But you'd be wrong.
But you'd be wrong.
so what's the point of posting this news in here? I can assure no teachers check this website.only geeks and losers do.
Whatever your view on the film is doesn't matter...I personally think it is great that they are willing to send this to schools. Kids today need more education.

I think all it says to me is that you're going to get differing opinions with the passage of time and the creation of new scientific testing equipment. It's very possible that 30 years down the line the Earth could be thought to be cooling. There's so much about the planet we don't know that it's foolish to flock to one scientific theory and follow it without opening your mind to others.

I can't say I've seen the film, so I've got no specific opinion on the matter, but when it's December in Northern Jersey and it's consistently above 50 degrees almost everyday, ya can't help but wonder...

i loved this film, I think it's a good idea to send it to teachers, I just think it would be better if they send it to students like myself!

Oh my gosh! I think I just gained an iota of respect for you, despite your s**tty DVD reviews.

It's called shifting weather fronts. I was in Nashville, TN over the weekend. It was clear, sunny and in the mid-70s on Sunday. Monday morning, however, it had cooled down to the mid-50s. And on our way home to Southern Illinois, we came across a weather front at the Kentucky state line, it went from clear and sunny to instant overcast. By the time we got home ~2 hours later, it was in the low-40s.
Bottom line is that you can't judge global climate changes by what the weather and temps are in any particular place on the map. You have to follow the weather reports on the movements of fronts. Just 2 weeks ago we had top temps in the teens. Then it warmed up to the 60s last week. Was this global warming? No, it's called a warm front.
Why do think we had no major hurricanes this year? A late developing El Nino over the central and eastern US kept the storms off shore. Here again, nothing to do with global warming or cooling for that matter.
In fact, it was warmer back in the 1930s and 1940s than it is today. I doubt all those Model Ts were responsible for global warming back then. Bottom line people is that climate changes are cyclic. So for these environmentalists to take a relatively short time span to gauge whether or not there's some sort of warming trend going on is somewhat disingenious. But since there hasn't been accurate weather records kept for much more than 100 years or so, this alarmist attitude just seems like over-hyped nonsense to me and a lot of skeptics.
And another small fact that these alarmists don't ever seem to mention is that volcanoes produce much more CO2 than all the cars in the world in just their eruption cycles. The Earth is a resilient place. Any climate changes will correct themselves given enough time. Hell it recovered from the mass extinction asteroid hit that killed the dinosaurs, I think it can handle us humans and our cars.
Oh, and Gabe....when I post "insults", I fully explain them, unlike my liberal counter-parts where they post "hit-and-run" insults with no explanations.

What's the point of posting the facts? You don't actually care about them. If you've seen Gore's film, and have based your facts and findings on personal research, than more power to you, you've gather the facts in the case and approached with an open mind. If you haven't seen the film, and are simply parroting what you've been fed by right-wing media, than I don't feel I have to listen. I've based my opinion on research, not politics. The Earth is a resiliant planet, you are right, and it will be here untill the day our sun goes super nova and takes it out, but the species on the planet are weak and fragile.
And I don't remember accusing you of "insulting" anyone, unless you're referring to the horse's ass that posted just ahead of my previous comment.

What's the big deal. So I don't like your DVD reviews, but agree with your politics. Sorry if you don't like it, but you can't please everyone.

There's a big difference between not liking my DVD reviews and refering to them as s**tty, especially in a forum that doesn't include anyone. It's childish. So what's the big deal, I think you're a horse's ass, I can't pelase everyone.

Dude, all I was saying is that it's been ridiculously hot all the time. Not yesterday, not for a week, all season. And I totally didn't say it was a result of global warming. Just saying my balls can't take this weather.

It's spelled "disingenuous." Please edit.
A great post like that deserves the polish.

This thread is a perfect example why politically themed dvd's, either scientific or otherwise, should be omitted from review. Water is wet, life sucks, democrats are bleeding heart communists, republicans are nazis and we Americans all want to rebuild the world in the image of Texas...just review movies and leave your politics at the door please. Now that I am protected by "the anonymity of the internet" I will climb off my virtual soapbox and crawl back under my rock now. Good day.
To me, people who deny global warming are akin to those who deny evolution. They ignore the overwhelming evidence (rising oceans, melting polar caps) and focus on ambiguous facts to try and shoot down the theory. I love it when people bring up the `new ice age' threat to show how you can't believe global warming. "If they were wrong then, they MUST be wrong now". They also thought smoking was harmless, but further study and advances in science have proven otherwise. George W. Bush won't even deny global arming, now, so that should tell you something.
[edit]
I obviously meant that "Bush won't even deny global Warming." Global arming IS deniable. Just a global plot by the Illuminati (via the media) in order to create a sense of panic and paranoia.

Since when did caring about the planet and where you live become so political? I'm a Republican, vote Republican, and saw "An Inconvenient Truth" in the cinema not because I'm a Republican, but because I care about what happens to the generations that come after us. I think it's truly sad that some (Lincoln6, etc) feel the need to put up the political barriers when they do not really apply here. Is it just because Gore stamped his name on this? Well, let me ask you this: have you even SEEN this movie? Because it's not exactly a propagandic piece of filmmaking. I agree with Gabe - those lambasting this movie without having even seen it are blind with partisenship and that's a sad thing because it's why nothing gets done in this country. I teach 4th grade and I'll show this to my kids in a heartbeat.
And I totally reject 'Lincoln's' assertion that "..the Earth is a resilient place, it will correct itself over time." To me that's like sayin, "I'm just going to throw my trash out of my car window because, well, it'll get picked up eventually." Totally ridiculous! Why let it even come to that?
