IMAX edition?
What makes the IMAX version different from the version on disc one?

That sound you hear is the scraping of the barrel...
No extra features? That stinks.

Since the whole purpose of watching an IMAX film is seeing it on one of those giant screens, unless you have one in your rec room, what is the point of this release?
AAAAAAAAARGGHHH!!!
I just got my copy of the original Apollo 13 DVD off of ebay the other day!!!
Oh well at least the new disc isn't anyting special, although a new transfer might be nice.

The theatrical version is twenty four minutes longer than the IMAX version according to the details I have.
Episode II was about the same shorter than the theatrical cut - but Harry Potter 3 and Spider-man 2 were the same length.
I must say, I was very excited when I saw the headline.
However, it looks like this could be a very disappointing reissue.

beh
the only tempting thing is perhaps the DTS *since i didn't get the one with DTS on it* and 'maybe' the IMAX version, but, like said, what the hells the diff, those IMAX versions are made especially for the IMAX theaters....how does that work at home o_0
Apollo 13
On the original Region 1 DVD if you left the menu screen on - it played the entire Original Soundtrack Score by James Horner.
hmmm. I already have the anamorphic widescreen, DTS version of this film. With no extra or a new digital transfer, I think I'll just keep my current copy.
So where is the 1-hour documentary "The Lost Moon", that is on the first dvd?
And do we get a new transfer of the original movie, as it was released in the early, mediocre transfer quality dvd days of the late 90's?
The Imax version is 20 min. shorter, because they can't physically make and play prints of an Imax film that runs over 2 hours. But they have created a totally new 15 perf/70mm print, with improved clarity, so that the movie could play in this large format. This was done in conjunction with the folks of Imax. They used the special Imax DMR process, a digital remastering process, to reduce the grain from the original super 35 negative. For the precise details, visit:

I think we can expect a much better looking transfer from this Imax version, if they do it right, because of this very process. So, for the fans, I think it is a no brainer.

Thats correct, I saw ron howard interviewed about it when it hit imax.
The question is, why the hell would anyone want two editions of the movie in a single set, especially when one is artifically recomposed and 24 mins shorter?

I hope they are polishing up the original theatrical version as well. My old DTS copy had a picture that was less than stellar. I sold it on Ebay a year ago in anticipation of this re-release.
Fianlly my old Widescreen VHS copy (that includes the fantastic 'Lost Moon' documentary) can be replaced! I've waited for an SE release- not quite what I'd hoped for (DTS on the feature as well as DD 5.1) but I'll settle for it now. Can't wait!
sucks
No specials features sucks... Whats the point of having a new edition with a new transfer without special features..... Hong Kong PHOOEY!
I like the packaging. Pretty nice artwork there.
Nice artwork. I hope that IMAX graphic is just a sticker. I'm gonna pic this up when it comes out.
the cover art for the vhs version was SOOO much better than this...i feel sorry for universal...just because the hired the wrong graphic designer. i hope this isn't the final piece.
The moon crescent looks way to static and rigid, give it a more lucid/ transparent feel and the artwork is great.
I don't have it so I'll pick it up.
The Imax sersion will be missing so many scenes.
That cover is pretty misleading. It makes it look like a whole bunch of new content has been added, when really its the same as before and a lammer, shorter version.
Does anybody remember the last time you purchased a universal dvd release and not felt a little ripped off?
What happened? Did they give the dvd department to the mailroom guy or something? For awhile they were releasing quite good "collector's edition" discs (even if the earliest featured poor non-anamorphic transfers)
at least it felt like someone who generally loved movies was at the helm.
Now the packaging feels cheap, the extras are like re-edited epk's and fluff-promo bulls**t. It seems like it started with the first re-release of the first 2 American Pie films and has continued downhill ever since. I have to say, I just picked up the "Shaun of the Dead" release (here in the states, it is distributed by universal) and it is the exception to the rule: ie, killer transfer, VERY good extras (this may have more to do with Rogue Pictures than Uni) although the cover still has an air of cheapness to it.
I think Uni was the first to show how profitable double-dipping can be (which EVERY studio has followed suit)
and has done so with any and every film that has a sequel coming out or any kind of actor/director tie in. It's like they only allow so much behind the scenes footage to appear on the disc so that in six months to a year they can promote their new
"special ultimate edition with 3 NEW FEATURETTES!!"
Almost all of the original Uni collector editions featured very good
hour plus documentaries, which actually had substance to them. Now we usually get multiple featurettes which on the package appear like there is more content but almost always are just to negate royalties to those who appear in them. Greed sucks.

I want to pick this up. Howard and Hanks did an amazing film here.
I'm so disapointed in this "special Edition". This is a really cheap ploy yo get extra money. I have the DTS version, and I think I'll stick with that.
I think the artwork needed to be finessed a bit, but now it has a "right out of graphic design school" look. Yeah, I am still gonna pick it up.

Universal has gone mad... again. Someone please explain to me why would anyone watch the IMAX version?? (unless you have an IMAX screen at home of course)
Well it looks like the IMAX has a different cut of the film.
Overall this looks like nothing special.
I like both covers even if they need a few modifations.

What a surprise! Since I don't own the previous release of this, I will definately be getting this for sure. I don't mind special features so I'll be alright.
