Too bad there are apparently no special features. I really liked this movie and would love to hear Dominik talk about it, especially the controversy over the movie being taken away from him and (apparently) being given back to him.

i saw this movie...it was ok...casey affleck made this memorable. i heard that there were two versions to this movie...that was the reason for the hold up...i think it was made in 2005 and was supposed to be released in 2006. i wonder if they'll release the second version of this down the line...like they did with the exorcist dominion...since this one also didn't make much noise at the box office.
what a pointless release.
Where's a 2-Disc?
The trailer for this was brilliant I thought. Not seen the film yet mind.
Yeah no doubt an SE will come later on.
I saw this earlier this month at a special screening, ironically it's opening in the UK this Friday. It's very good but don't go in expecting your usual Western, because you'll be sorely mistaken. It's slow and long, personally I thought it was about 20 minutes too long.
The trailer is a bit misleading really.

I wanted to see this but then I heard it wasnt to good. I will buy it probably
Hmmmm Warner did not announce a Blu-ray and an HD DVD release? Odd.

Oh dont worry in 3 months from its release, they will double dip it to a 2-disc special edition.

this movie OWNED! it was incredibly good, and Casey Affleck weill hopefully get a nomination for it... very disappointed in the lack of extras
While an 2 Disc SE is probable I wouldn't say it's guaranteed. Transformers this isn't.
It is strange there is no HD version though.

You were misinformed
It's a slow burning Western, don't expect lots of gunfights, there aren't really any.

Must own for me- I never managed to catch this in theatres.
...and there has to be a double-dip coming. Warner's probably going to wait till the fans buy the one disc (since this tanked at the boxoffice), even though that's not really thier style.

I'm glad Warner is not fooling around and started offering up widescreen-only releases (no full-screen only edition or a flipper disc) for most of their box-office duds. It forces the people who still prefer foolscreen to pick up the only version of the film available, even if it's the likes of "A Sound of Thunder", "Lucky You", or "The Invasion".
I heard great things about the flick, I was interested in seeing it (as well as the "3:10 to Yuma" remake) but I never got around to seeing it. Will check the DVD out.

Awesome film, but ricockulously inflated title. The writer really should have left well enough alone after "James".
YES. This is in my top 5 best films of the year. They should release a 2-disc but either way I don't care, I just want the movie.

I don't understand
wouldn't that be a reason not to buy it?

Heard this was great, but not the hardcore action epic people tend to expect from westerns... more of a thoughtful character study. Probably why it bombed if it's true.
I don't think it bombed. It was due to be released a year ago but they missed last Autumn's slot. It's very much an Autumn instead of Summer film.

It amazes me in 2007 American studios still release Full-screen version (an inaccurate name if there was one). All it does is slow uptake of Widescreen in North America.
Literally the rest of the world dumped Full-screen as soon as DVD came out. I've not seen a full-screen DVD from a Widescreen film in the UK for years now.

This movie was VERY good. Affleck deserves an Oscar nom for his work in this.
Loved the movie! I really hope they announce a HD version.
Here in the U.S., there's still a market for pan-n-scan releases. Sad but true -- Disney, Anchor Bay and Criterion are the studios have have gone to OAR-only releases as far as I know. Warners, Universal, and Fox still do separate foolscreen releases for some of their movies.

I disagree with you that this movie "tanked". It was release to a MAX of 301 movie theaters. San Diego has more movie theaters then that! It was a very limited release movie that was only sent to the theater to fulfill some contract obligation. If it had been given proper advertisement, and a wide release, I think it could have easily made up its production cost of $30 million.

Masterpiece. Unlike any other film I've seen before. Captures an aura and myth with a minute attention to detail and exudes a definite atmosphere of forbidding change in the winds.

It really annoys me when a solid film people may actually like is considered too much a risk and not released properly. This even has Brad Pitt in it to pull in the crowds.
Blade Runner: The Final Cut opened here last Friday but it's literally showing in 5 cinemas across the whole of the UK and for one week only, way to go!
Thankfully it is being released on Special Edition DVD this Monday, some 3.5 weeks before the USA.

True but that's literally only because studios still release them and shops still sell (I presume) Fullscreen TVs.
In the UK except for small Kitchen TV's you cannot even buy Fullscreen TVs anymore. It's even getting hard to find Fullscreen Kitchen TVs, they're all going Widescreen too. The only area fullscreen is still the norm. is in Computer Monitors, Widescreen monitors haven't really caught on yet, you could argue Widescreen for computer work isn't really needed.
In reality most people over here given the choice between fullscreen and Widescreen with it's black bars they don't understand would pick fullscreen, and most people who buy Widescreen buy it for the larger size not that it's widescreen, BUT the end effect has still be the same the killing off of Fullscreen.
I guess it's because many Americans have had LARGE fullscreen TVs long before DVD came out whereas in the UK anyway most people had around 20" until DVD came along and larger TV sizes become the norm.
Even today the most popular size is 32" Widescreen LCD I bet the average is higher in America.

I will rent this and wait for the HD/Blu Ray release.

I agree 100%...reminds me a lot of his buddy George's Solaris a few years back. Great film, but I think people were expecting some sort of sci-fi/horror film. In actuality, it was more of a dramatic character piece with atmospheric sci-fi trappings. Whether intentional or not (though for my money, I'd lean towards the former), the trailer definitely skewed the average viewer's perception of the film.

What a great, great film. Easily in my top three of the year so far. Bummer about the barebones. Maybe I'll hold off, maybe I won't; depends on what buzz might be circulating about a more loaded release come February. If we're lucky, some well-deserved award nominations will create enough interest to bring about a better set.
I personally wouldn't change or cut out a second of it, although a different cut could be interesting, I suppose.
While Affleck was fantastic and carried the last third of the film, for me the real eye-opener was Pitt, who delivers on every level and gives his best performance since, hell, ever.

Criterion should have picked this up.
I got to interview Andrew Dominic for a mag i write for and he said this is his version, it just missed the oscar season and he said the studio wanted it to be an oscar picture, they just missed the window because they had to do some reshoots because of location problems with snow and such.

Wait...how could it miss the window when it came out in September? Just off the top of my head, I know Million Dollar Baby came out in the middle of December 2004 and got nominated....

He meant the Oscar window for last year. The movie was probably done late 06/early 07 but Warner probably wanted to release it closer to fall to get more Oscar recognition.
I really wanted to see the movie but it left the closest theater to me after 2 weeks. Plus the 2nd week they chopped the times in half and was only playing it in the morning and afternoon. Since there's no Blu-ray/HD DVD release I suspect a double dip. If there was a high def release I probably would of blind bought it. I'll just rent it now. Wouldn't be surprised if down the line when the high def ones eventually come out the special features will be on there but no special edition dvd. Warner has been doing the HD exclusive content a lot recently.
