Though as far as Avatar goes, it was alright, but Im in no hurry to buy it. The Hurt Locker may have not made as much as Avatar, but its definitely a more satisfying and realistic film.
Huh? I thought Avatar was more realistic.....
but hey, wasn't it set in a CGI world in the future?

I haven't seen this yet. And, that being said, I love how they're doing this disc, and wish that more would be done this way. That is, with other discs for special features of course.
Also, thank god that the BD logo at the top is reduced. As much as I love Blu-Ray, I've always hated its insistence on peacocking that with it's packaging.

Hmm, I know it. Buy this version now and get milked a few months later for the 3D version.
Now will this 3D version be Dolby3D or RealD or other? Personally I’m rather impressed with Dolby3D when I saw Toy Story at the Empire Leicester Square , last year.
Too bad they didn’t get Avatar booked in Empire 1 for the Dolby3D JBL 56KW THX experience.
This Bluray better have perfect spot on colour balance on par with Star Trek which is the only Bluray that I have out many others that are fit for the cat to c**p on!
If I see or get a hint of any (green smearing) on “Avatar” Fox is going to get steaming phone call from me!
(The Abyss Terminator 2 Titanic True Lies) looks just dreadful on DVD and Bluray! Yuck enough of the piss poor colour balance James Cameron! I want to see a mirrored cinema colour balance of Avatar on bluray!
Mind you the standard plastic case looks reasonable priced at Play.com for under £15.00 which mind you would be near to the cost of cinema ticket at Leicester Square, London. Now then!
I’ll buy the 2D version just in case they can’t figure out how to put 3D version on bluray and please (no red and blue filter glasses) they are total YUCK!

Avatar Proves One Thing 1 GREATEST Thing That If The Script Is C**p then 3D Visuals Won't Help I Truly Believe Avatar Is A C**p Compared To Cameron's Earlier Masterpieces Such As Aliens And T2 Judgement Day
It's more than a little amusing to read all the folks here trotting out the meaningless buzzword 'overrated' or expressing their shock that "Avatar" wasn't the cinematic event of the century. Even if you're unfamiliar with Cameron's previous work, the trailer(s) were well-edited and succinctly condensed the film. What you see is what you get.
I'm glad "Avatar" didn't win Best Picture, but "The Hurt Locker" is every bit as unoriginal and ridiculously absurd. "District 9" should've won. Dammit.

I have a feeling FOX just wanted to get this out primarily for the rental market and for people who don't care about extras. I will wait until a more complete edition comes out.
The technical aspect is brilliant
But its Dances with Wolves in space. Or like sout park called it Dances with smurfs. He he he
Its very overrated

Typical Fox, going for 2,3,4 grabs of the money tree. I'll wait until the Special Limited Director's Cut 3D Edition comes out. Shame as I really enjoyed this, but don't want to buy 2 or 3 versions.
Well, I must say it is refreshing that both Blu Ray and DVD are getting the special features shaft.

If you read through these posts, it appears that alot of people didn't like it that much. I personally thought it was okay, and pretty to look at, but I have not desire to buy it or watch it again. I was so happy that The Hurt Locker won the Oscar instead.
No, all it shows is that the people who don't like Avatar are more compelled to share with us their negative comments. More so than the people who like the film are to say what it is they like about the film. I'm also sure that there are negative comments here from people who like the film but are responding to the bare-bones-ness of the DVD/BD release. This is giving the impression that 'a lot of people don't like Avatar'.
A lot of people do like Avatar. A lot of people who don't like Avatar like to tell us all about it so we're all good and clear about 'what they reckon'.
Some of us, choose not to live through our days with the victim mentality of thinking about all the ways in which the evil corporations (Fox in this case) are f**king us over. They are doing that but living under that cloud isn't where I personally want to be.
If you like Avatar, then buy it. Shop wisely. You'll still be getting the film to watch in exchange for your money. It's a monetary transaction, a business and you are in fact getting something for you money. People react like they're handing money over and getting nothing in return. I don't mind paying £15 to own a film that a lot of people worked hard on for 3-4 years. As I've said before, as far as the BD is concerned, we are getting an additional DVD copy as well for the price. That in itself is useful to me and probably to a lot of other people.
If you don't like Avatar don't waste your time on this thread. Try to positive on a thread that interests you. There's loads of news items and threads on this site I don't have an interest in. Horror, Asian and Manga stuff leaves me cold. I do sometimes have a look at the articles but I would really worry if I spent any time deliberately writing negatively on something I was completely agnostic about.
I am the thread killer! Hear me shuffle and squeak.
I'm actually interested to see this 1.78 and in 2D as I wanted to see it 2D for the sake of comparison but never got the opportunity. Seeing it in 2D will I think focus attention on the film itself by losing the distraction of the 3D effect. I'm curious to see what's left after the extra dimension is stripped away.

No point in watching this without the 3D, I'm sure it'll still be in theatres in 2011.

Awesome movie!!! A old story retold, but they are always retold. A breathtaking beautiful film with a great message.
Many fans with they could live on Pandora and in many ways Pandora is America/Canada before the Europeans arrival. Modern civilization does have it's major flaws. We need to return to a simpler life. I too sometimes wish I lived in early America/Pandora as a hunter/gatherer competing with other tribes.
This movie deserved to win SFX at the Oscars. But The Hurt Locker definitely deserved that Oscar.
I will definitely be picking this up. Just breath taking.

I have to agree that double dipping, or "triple dipping" seems like a slap-in-the-face to customers, but that's just how business is. Imagine if you created the most successful movie in your state/country and you could make millions of dollars off of it. You would, wouldn't you? I'm not pointing the finger at you specifically, because I'd do it too and pretty much everyone else will. Since Cameron knows he can make billions off this thing, he's taking advantage of it.
Although, I find it kind of pointless how the studio would release a 2-disc Blu-ray, and then a 3-D Blu-ray with the same extras? I know they're milking it, but at least some milking makes sense. This makes NONE.

I totally agree with you. I really don't need the 3D TV and a 3D Blu-Ray player just for this right away. I mean, I hope that Disney will release "Alice in Wonderland," "A Christmas Carol" and "Toy Story 3" on Hi-Def 2D Blu-Ray when they come out on Blu-Ray. I don't really see a whole point with 3D Home Entertainment, unless if it will soon take over the mainstream world, then I'm just fine with regular HD setup and standard setup. That's why I would prefer getting this Combo Pack.

Where did you hear or read this? Only the IMAX 3-D was in 1:78. All others were in 2:35 according to IMDB. I would think it would be in 2:35.

I found this on Digital Bits after I posted the above:
Also today, we've checked with the studio and have learned that James Cameron's Avatar will be presented on Blu-ray in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio, with DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. Run time is 162 minutes, which appears to be the theatrical cut. Now, before anyone gets their panties in a bunch that it's 1.78 and not 2.35... our information is that the 1.78 ratio is the preference of Cameron. In his mind, the IMAX presentation is the preferred theatrical ratio - not the 2.35 ratio seen in traditional theaters. By using 1.78, all of that original IMAX presentation image area can be presented. So essentially, you're not losing anything in the image by having it 1.78 vs. 2.35... you're actually gaining more image. So that's the deal.

I really liked the film - can't say that I loved it, but the 3D was spectacular. Having seen the film in both 2D and 3D, it's cool to have the extra spectacle of the 3D, but it adds nothing to the films value. It's still fun entertainment.

Ew, blarf. I sincerely hope they do not use that artwork, it's terrible. The barebones artwork, while sparse, is much better than that awful excercise in floating heads and bad Photoshopping prowess.

I'm just glad it is coming out on Blu ray now instead next fall. I'l be more then happy to double dip for the 2-3 disc then.
Also, I love all the, I am waiting for the 3-D release next year. OK, so your going to buy a NEW 3-D LCD tv to watch that 3-D movie on that will cost probably $2,000 plus. I think there will be very few people upgrading to 3-D TV's this fall. If you think Blu ray is a niche market, 3-D TV's is going to even more of one. Also the the PS3 is the only Blu ray player announced, that I've heard that will have a 3-D downloadable upgrade.

I'm partially glad this DVD will not include the red/blue glasses, it would totally cheapen the Avatar experience. As someone who hasn't made the entire blu-ray transition yet, but plans to, I'm glad there's a combo pack, because if any movie deserves Blu-Ray treatment, it's this one. And I'm also glad they used the poster art for the cover. I'll buy the eventual 3-D version, because I really loved this movie. Can't wait

YkymfMF,
You're right. I'm sorry. It just feels like it's been a while, (lol), and Sherlock Holmes is coming even sooner, but it's a much shorter movie. I guess I was just too impatient.
Sorry about that!

*Yawn*
Saw it in IMAX 3d, no home video version will ever come close. The movie was bad anyway.

it was nowhere even close to being as AWESOME and AMAZING as everyone was saying. i personally did like it but it was just good, thats it. the 3D was pointless and added nothing, it was like watching a moving Viewmaster.
but sadly there are always movies that "everyone" thinks is amazing and mind blowing and then you finally see it and realize they were wrong, lying, high or all three.
also i just realized the cover is like old art or something. other than being yellow, her eye looks like a normal human eye there. while in the movie they have these big, cat-like eyes that sorta go up.
interesting.

MBJ,
"As if we haven't been waiting enough"? Really? A December to April wait is considered a long wait now? ESPECIALLY for the most successful film of all time? Titanic wasn't available on home video until September of the following year. December 'til September. I'm actually surprised Avatar will be available so quickly. But, considering it has zero extras and the 3-D version will likely still be playing, it's not so crazy.

It honestly kind of upsets me that they'll release the better version much later, af if we haven't been waiting enough. I'll probably buy the first version (probably cause I love the movie so much), and see what the 3-d one is like based on a review or something.
I'm a sucker, so I'll most likely end up buying all three Blus. I just really want this movie in my collection. :p
If it means anything, I'm hearing that the PlayStation3 will be upgradable to 3D Blu-ray with just a firmware update. So that just leaves upgrading the TV for some.

I actually enjoyed this. Do you really need a special TV and Bluray player to buy 3D Home Entertainment, cause I really don't need to waste $$$ just for this.
Also I wonder what are plans for Toy Story 3 if they will release just regular or 3D Bluray?

Since it is more-or-less confirmed that there will be more editions released down the line, I don't think they are being unfair. Remember, Cameron needs to get that couple of hundred million bucks that Avatar lost because of Alice in Wonderland!
I didn't much care for the movie. I saw the best possible presentation - Imax 3D. I don't think I will buy this. It is a technical achievement, but on the whole it is far from satisfactory. And I've just made the transition to HD, so I definately will not be upgrading to 3D soon. And Avatar is almost nothing if not 3D!

One of 2009's best films, so I will buy the DVD without hesitation, it's worth every penny even if they release 3 different versions later.
The artwork sucks
I hope they use the French movie poster as the artwork for the special editions.

I didn't like this beyond the visual effects. It's okay, but hardly a great film. Although, I did like the 'Creating the World of Pandora' feature, that was really interesting.
This is absolute s**t. It isn't enough that throngs of people have put this film beyond any other, they can't give us a decent Blu-Ray release for this film? Instead, we get a single no frills disk and then the double dip in November. Supposedly they are going to use every single bit of the 50mb of space on the April 22nd Blu-Ray relase. I HIGHLY doubt that. So they expect we will buy that mess and turn around and buy it again in the same year? No thank you 20th Century Fox, you will only get my money once and it isn't going to be until November.

Except for the fact that Dances With Wolves was essentially a retelling of Pocahontas during the Civil War. Everyone seems to forget this fact.
Actually, if I were to say it ripped off anything it would be "A Princess of Mars". Much more similar given the genre and cultural aspects. I feel bad for Andrew Stanton who has his direct adaptation gearing up.
Regardless, I loved the flick for what it was and thought the story was more than decent enough to give some palpable emotional support to the insane effects. It should be pretty easy to hold off until December, so as long as it's widely known that there's going to be a double dip, I really just don't see a problem with it.

I dislike the trend of releasing a bare-bones version whilst telling us there'll be a Special Edition down the track. Why not wait just a little longer and release one definitive version and be done with it?
I find it extremely disappointing that Cameron used this movie to build the buzz for 3D and now he says it won't be out on 3D Blu-Ray until at least next year because Fox wants more 3D hardware penetration in the market first. Thanks a lot Jimbo.
So what, we're gonna see 3 separate Blu-Ray releases for Avatar? Great.
I'm sick of the excessive milking that goes on and the consumer being treated with such disrespect.

Um, yeah, I'll wait til hell gets iced before I buy the tenth anniversary Jake Sully Parapelegic 3-D multi disc N'avi edition to AVATAR.
The multi-disc blu-ray will sit in its own wheel chair & will give off a Pandora glow when the sun goes down. 20th Century Fox is going to re-release this so many times over the next ten years, I get sick just thinking about it.

I'll watch it again even without the 3D.
Will rent this version.
The movie is a technical achievement in and of itself, but the plot was just highly derivative. The most overrated movie of the decade (in my opinion), with "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" trailing alongside it.
great movie! Although it ripped off a of a few movies, I enjoyed this movie a lot. Not as good as The Hurt Locker or Inglourious Basterds, but it was still great. I'm not buying into this 3d gimmick. I won't buy into this whole 3D blu-ray mess until they have the technology where I don't have to wear $100 glasses to watch the film ontop of the expensive 3D TV and 3D Blu-ray Player. Plus they'll probably charge $40 for the actual 3D blu-ray disks. Rip OFF!
Really great film. I'll wait for the Nov/Dec release, not for the possibility of it in 3D but b/c I'd like to see the extras they'd add to it.
Not one of the best movies ever, but a damn good one at that. Day 1 purchase
Enjoyed the movie. Special effects amazed me. HOWEVER, the story/plot was extremely unoriginal. It was almost an EXACT copy of Dances with Wolves.
I don't really plan on buying a 3D TV. I might get this by using a part of a 60 dollar gift card I got off my rewards points at Best Buy. The movie overall was just okay.
I do not think there will be a 3D home release until at least 2011. It simply makes no sense to release it at the moment.
There will be a multi-disc feature rich version in November/December however. Extended cut is rumoured, but not definite (Cameron says they are thinking of doing an extended theatrical re-release... if that happens, then I would expect an extended cut on the Ultimate edition)

yeah they already announced a bigger multi disc edition will come out this november. i assume that'll also have both 2D and 3D versions and it'll probably be the first movie to take advantage of 3D tvs. so no more red/blue glasses...woo. lol
i'll just wait til november cuz i'm a sucker for extras. but i dont care about 3D, while neat to see it added nothing so 2D is enough.

I'll hold off until the 3D versions come out. I just hope they can perfect the 3D DVD/Blu-Rays for this release. The Red/Blue glasses are never good enough!
