Quote: Ryan Gosling (Oscar® Nominee, Half Nelson) and Oscar® Nominee for Best Actress Michelle Williams star in the honest, moving, and uninhibited love story, BLUE VALENTINE. The film blends present moments in time with romantic past memories to tell the story of Dean (Gosling) and Cindy (Williams), a young couple who spend a night away from their daughter in an attempt to save their failing marriage. Director Derek Cianfrance creates a raw, naturalistic portrayal of a relationship, while simultaneously depicting two young people making that first, intoxicating romantic connection through music, dance and silly jokes. As it traces the arc of Dean and Cindy’s relationship, BLUE VALENTINE poses questions that touch us all: How do you sustain love? Is it even possible to do so? What do you when your dreams don’t come true, or your life doesn’t go as planned? What do you do when your partner doesn’t deliver on the promise of his or her potential?

Javier Bardem's really didn't come out of nowhere. The fifth slot was down to him, Gosling, and Robert Duvall. I was hoping for Gosling to get in but it wasn't surprising when he didn't, just disappointing. I was really pleased Michelle at least got in. I love her and it would have been a shame if the film didn't get any nominations at all. At least it received one major one.
Anyway, in my top 10 of the year. The performances were great. What a draining experience, and I mean that in a good way. Will buy the Blu-ray.

It's just the other five got more votes for nominations. If Bridges had received more votes in the supporting actor category he would have been nominated there instead. Same with Hailee Steinfeld at the end of the day it's the votes that count from Academy members. It would be cool to see full results after the fact but I can't see that happening. It might ruffle to many feathers...

There are five slots for Leading Role. Insert Gosling into the final five and another magnificent performance is squeezed out, and when that movie gets announced on DVD/Bluray everybody will be clamoring "I can't believe (insert great actor) didn't get nominated" at the top of their lungs.
Seriously, I don't get why people keep saying someone was shunned / robbed. There can only be five, people. And dozens of movies containing great performances are released each year.
I get that. I know there can only be five, but just like Christopher Nolan not getting a Best Director nomination, Ryan Gosling not being nominated was a bit of a shock. It's just a little bit more surprising given that the film is essentially a two hander and Michelle Williams did get nominated. If anything, I'd have taken Jeff Bridges out and subbed him with Ryan Gosling. Lots of people will lament that so and so didn't get nominated, how sad, etc. but none more so than Christopher Nolan missing Best Director and Ryan Gosling for Best Actor. Javier Bardem's nomination (haven't seen Biutiful yet) was surprising as it came out of nowhere.

Like I said, in my opinion Ryan deserved a nomination more than Jesse Eisenberg.

Wonderful film, great cover. Getting it at some point for sure

There isn't anything to censor..the original NC-17 cut of the movie was appealed to get an R rating and nothing was taken out. I'm guessing that "Uncut and Uncensored" was just a sales point, since they replaced it with "The Most Provocative Film of the Year"

Its worth seeing, it kinda grows on you. I liked the gosling character. When u hear so much about how this was NC-17 at first then j see it, it's not nearly that bad.

Will rent. Looked decent.
Incredible film. Everything was top notch. I think it's an absolute travesty that Gosling was not nominated.
I'm going to be slightly immature now and say that he could have easily replaced Jesse Eisenberg's nomination. How his role in The Social Network was considered better than Gosling's will baffle me for years to come.
Ok immature rant over :p

I like this original poster for the box art, but I really dislike "The Most Provocative Film of the Year" at the bottom. It is definitely mature, and sometimes very uncomfortable. But it never felt provocative.
It made my personal top 5 of 2010. It was awfully depressing, but enriching in a way few movies are. I thought the non-linear screenplay made for a very astute viewing experience. Gosling and Williams were both pitch perfect.
And the Grizzly Bear soundtrack is icing on the cake

This was a very sad and devastated film. Gosling and Williams both put in a truly heartbreaking performance, IMHO they are among the most talented stars working today. All in all, this was a brilliant film.
Amazing film...everything about it - the acting, directing, script, cinematography - was just wonderful. I'm very much looking forward to the commentary.
