No commentary? I only wanted a diretcor's commentary! Is that too much to ask? And the new artwork doesn't look half as good as the original release.
So there's only that Great Success documentary that's new to the special edition, right?

I think if you check Hillbilly, BBM won far more awards around the world (though I know only America REALLY matters) than the pile of steaming turd that was Crash!
Sadly Universal, this never did WIN best picture.
"The timeless AWARD WINNING..."?
Last time I checked Crash won best motion picture, not this homosexual feature.

I seriously can't tell which one of the special features are new. Can someone help me out by pointing them out?
Great menus but wow to that 5 minute slapped together photoshop artwork. I'll probably buy it if I find it for a good price, I'd still really like to see it.

Absolutely, I think that is why this CE is so disappointing. I am not sure when, but the writing is on the wall now for a triple-dip with all the stuff that should have made the cut here on this Collectors Edition being included.
Quote: I lost all respect for the AMPAS after "Crash" got BP.
Me to, but Crash is a solid film as well. There is no doubt that Brokeback Mountain clearly still has the upper hand months later and is only gaining more respect from movie lovers, of course minus the little gold statue.

Whoever said they saw a 2-disc coming wasn't the only one!

WTF?!?!?! Soooooooooo disappointing! I'm p*ssed! No deleted scenes or audio commentaries? If you're going to give us a SE then do it right! This would have been better for a first edition! Ugh! I'm so frustrated! I guess I'll wait for the third edition they do sometime in the future, because you know they will someday.
This CE of the film is like a glazed donut with the chocolate frosting added, the other DVD didn't have the frosting or was glazed but it still tasted alright. The fact that I am comparing this with a donut says alot about how weak of a double-dip this is going to be.
I'll be sticking with my original DVD, the cover is far better.
Horrible cover!
Yeah...Universal screwed up. Ang Lee does commentary, so does Jake Gyllenhaal...there should be at least two commentaries on this (Lee and the screenwriter and perhaps book author, and then Lee with his two lead actors).
Although in hindsight it clearly made sense from a commercial point of view, to hype this as a "gay movie" felt as a mistake to me, because it is not a film about "gayness" but about friendship, love, and wasted opportunities because of fear. The "gay" factor was almost inconsequential, and in fact the movie could have worked almost exactly with any kind of "forbidden relationship", such as interracial love or love between people separated by a big age gap.
And, by the by, I am still perplexed about how so many people who watched the movie came out under the impression that the two lead characters were bisexual. C'mon... They are definitely NOT bisexual, they only lead a parallel straight life "in the open" to hide their homosexuality, just like so many homosexuals do out of fear of revealing their true sexual identity.

Also being released day-and-date with an HD DVD version. I can't wait to see that...
Great movie ... but no Ang Lee or actor's audio commentary? Those extra features are pretty weak considering they want you to Double Dip for this set. I'll stick with my single disc, thank you.
So anyone for a double-deep ?
Artwork and menus added...
SOOO saw this coming. That is why I didnt buy it when it came out.

I still dont understand why people think a certain "type" of movie "deserves" DTS over another. DTS is technically superior, period. The music, sound effects and dialogue will sound better with better stereo separation. For me, Dolby Digital is never "enough", its just adequate; especially since we now have better HD formats on the horizon.

See, I agree with this. I was disappointed on my initial viewing in theaters. I thought it was really good, but definitely not as amazing as I was expecting. Then I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I didn't cry when I watched the movie, but later the week after when I was thinking about it I all of a sudden got really emotional and started crying. It didn't hit me right away how absolutely heartbreaking it was. I saw it again a couple of weeks later and it was like a whole different viewing experience this time around. I thought it would get kind of dull on another viewing because it's not fast-paced and the first time I watched it I just recognized it as one that wouldn't be too great for repeat viewings. Well, I was wrong, because I was highly engrossed this time around, much more than I was the first time, and I was very into it and not bored for a second. It was official, I now saw how absolutely amazing this film was. I think most people would get more out of a second viewing as the consensus seems to be the same with everyone I talk to that has seen it more than once. They're disappointed the first time, but then it stays with them and they see it again and absolutely love it. I'd recommend everyone who felt similar the first time they saw it to give it another shot. It's a slow-burn of a movie that is more powerful after-the-fact than in-the-moment, and the fact that it can pull this off is just one reason why it's such an amazing film. It takes a lot for a movie to be able to stay with me like this one has. A lot of people just don't like that it's so subtle and slower paced. That doesn't bother me at all really. With this movie it's best to just sit back, relax, and take it all in.
Anyway, I went from being pretty disappointed to having this be one of my favorite films of all-time, if not my favorite.

Great art such as LOTR? HILARIOUS! Talk about boring c**p! BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN isn't nearly as long nor is it hard to sit through like a LOTR movie. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is a work of art and for smart, artsy people. It will go over the heads of others who can't appreciate all of the amazing aspects of it, like the directing, acting, cinematography, score, etc... That's why the reviews were amazing; because most critics are the artsy type, and it's why so many regular moviegoers call it overrated, because they're simpletons. I hate to sound like a film snob but it's true when it comes to artsy films, such as this one. Mainstream audiences won't appreciate this one.

Exactly! But people are too closed-minded to see past the gay aspect.
I'm sure as hell not satisfied with the current bare-bones release. I just KNEW this one was coming, and I will be buying it for sure. I can't wait to buy it! It will be the first time I've went out and bought a SE for a movie I already own on DVD so soon after it's released. I didn't even buy the 2-Disc of MONSTER yet and I absolutely love that film too (it's my #1 of 2004). BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN is a beautiful, haunting, epic romance. Lately I get emotional from just thinking about it. I hope the special features are amazing. There were a lot of scenes deleted from the movie that I'd love to get the chance to see, and I'd love to listen to some audio commentaries from tons of people involved in the film. There should be one of Ang, Heath, and Jake, one of Larry McMurtry, Diana Ossana, and Annie Proulx, one of Michelle and Anne, and then they could have one for some of the smaller supporting players, like Anna Faris, Linda Cardellini, and Kate Mara. Hell I'd want to listen to them all. I think this just might be my favorite film of all-time. I know there will never be another amazing film like it. There will be more amazing films, that's a sure thing, but another one this well-made, this epic and sweeping? No way. I just can't imagine it, and that's a shame and very depressing (it wouldn't be so depressing had it gotten the Oscar that it deserved, but to know that this wonderful, unique film didn't get the ultimate prize is a tragedy).
in my opinion, it wasn't as special as it could have been. I'm like a simpleton and an artsy type. I just love movies in general. I really enjoy Sense and Sensibility as much as Armageddon, and everyting in between and beyond that. (except some things of course). As much as I would love to like Brokeback Mountain, I just didn't. In fact I was disappointed a bit. I wasn't surprised that Hollywood (and maybe the american moviegoing public in general) would embrace this so much. And that's fine of course. But I come from Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I spoke with a lot of different people about this film, and the thing is, we didn't care that much for this movie. It was certainly no big deal, nor was it a great original story. I respect the opinions overseas, and I think it's good that more films from Tinseltown deal with these stories. I hope they keep making 'em. But in the end, this was no Oscar-movie to me. (It looked beautiful though.)

No they can't quit money. No studio can now. They knew about this and they even had it at the same time the original was released I'm sure, but they just decide to release a bad single disc for 20 bucks and then wait a few months to release they're "good" two-disc for 30-40 bucks. Munich and United 93 would be your best examples.
Anyway I'm sure I'll be renting this because I haven't seen it yet. And that was a funny comment, BTW.

Didn't see this double dip coming
. I am almost of the mindset that I would rather wait an extra 3 or 4 months for these releases just so they have time to give us complete editions the first time rather than having to double dip.
I thought the movie was good, really enjoyed Ledger. Overall though, I think the hype made the movie more than it was. The "romance" was highly contrived. These guys trade coy glances and the next thing we know they are going at it. Beyond that, I really enjoyed Ledger's character, though the mumbling did get on my nerves. Jake's character I absolutely hated. Had no feelings other than contempt for the character. Not sure that is how it was written, but he just came off as a horny, spoiled kid to me. I thought both ladies did a great job. Anne Hathaway definitely showed she is not just some Disney princess (unlike her party animal Disney alum Lindsey Lohan). She is getting beyond the tweeny roles.

May pick this one up as I got the first one on ebay which was a wrong thing to do as I got a bootleg version.
Loved Transamerica, hated Brokeback Mountain. It was so dull and boring, and, too slowly paced. I mean, a long movie works for great art such as LOTR and such, but, not BBM.
There were more genuine romantic and tender feelings between Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, than there were between these two. Brokeback was incredibly boring, and the "romance" (I use the term loosely) felt forced, stale and unoriginal. Before they start rolling out 2 disc editions, why can't studios look at their other large market - their classic catalogues.
I had a feeling this was coming. Still haven't seen it.

WHATEVER dude? Grow up!
That's not what he's saying at all. He's saying the movie got loads of unwarranted attention because it was about two gay men, not a man and awoman. The movie is beautifully shot yes, but its dreadfully boring, IMO. It would have been boring if it were a man and a woman, it was only so "great" and "revolutionary" because it was two gay men.
I'm also tired of people who didn't like this movie getting hammed on because of their "insecurities". Just because someone doesn't like a movie about gay people doesn't mean they can't appreciate film or wouldn't like another with a gay influenced storyline (I myslef liked "Transamerica"
, but again, thought this was boring, drawn out and maybe a tabe cliche.
The thing is, is that this movie isn't some old tired story just hyped because of two gay men, it's a very original story that has something to say about all relationships and something that hasn't been talked about before.

horribly overrated film. worth one view (if that) and that's it. good cinematography, but other than that, wtf is the big deal about this movie?! the controversy is soooo unwarranted. I gave it a 6/10.
I love this film, and I will double-dip for sure. It's great to hear about a DTS track being there, the acoustics from the score and all will sound splendid in any home theater system. The postcards are a nice touch and all, but I want to know what the extras are being that this was so controversial.

I think they will, it's just a matter of time. It's just that while "Pride & Prejudice" did fairly well at the box office, it wasn't as talked about and didn't get as much publicity as BM did. BBC double-dipped on the 1995 miniseries, so I don't think Universal will be content with just one release of P&P.

Other than Saw. And Saw II. And Man On Fire. And The Day After Tomorrow, I Robot, Anything LOTR, King Kong, Dodgeball, Garfield, Underworld, Scary Movie 3, Chicago, Mr and Mrs Smith, Big Fish, XMen, and Sin City.I think you will find that 99 times out of 100 this happens - it usually pays to wait for 6 months of a movie release to DVD if you like that movie and it was released as a standard edition...

So 2 gay movies come out in a year where 100's of "STRAIGHT" movies come out every year and you say they are "HYPING" the gay thing?
I agree. Brokeback felt like a standard cheap romance novel, you can buy for $5 a book. It was not really intense, original drama with the 2 characters, gay or not gay, doesn't matter. It looked beautiful, but as good directors (and yes, Ang Lee is one of them, but not here) know, story is everything. To me, this story was not very interesting or had much of a dramatic curve. I just couldn't feel dramatic tension. The whole movie I'd been waiting for it to happen, but it didn't. It didn't feel the connection. Maybe a bad example or not, but with The Shawshank Redemption, I cry every time. I feel the deep connection those 2 men have. Not a gay relationship, true. But the friendship you know, I really felt that. Just to illuminate how I experienced it.

Gee I wonder if Focus will handle this double sip as well as they handles the recent "Special Edition" of 21 grams!!!
goddamit will someone please be an immature jerk and make a gay cowboy joke
Cool... More bang for your buck.
No surprise, at least this excellent tearjerker about bisexual sheperds has a decent DVD.

that is kinda ture, but the film is very well made. you should see it for ang lee's fantastic direction at the very least. there is no harm in seeing a film once. yes, its a very hyped film, but it is also a very good one. I say see it just to see it.

Yes, I mean the DTS soundtrack doesn't really make it worth buying again. And personally, though I loved the movie and bought the one-disc release, I'm not really interested in very in-depth making of stuff when it comes to Brokeback Mountain. What more could one want to know, that's not already in the first DVD's featurettes? As for the "hilghly collectible" cards, come on. (And how can something be "highly" collectible anyway?).
It's a great film and all, but the regular edition out now has features, so forget it.

I bought the original release (got a copy of the script which is still sitting on my desk)...still have yet to watch it. I am curious to see how good this is. Personally, I thought Crash was the best picture last year, even though I haden't seen this one. I'll probably pick this up.
I knew Universal was going to double-dip on this one... I knew it, I knew it. But a drama like this doesn't necessitate a DTS track. (Universal is just being inconsistent with their DTS offerings on DVD nowadays.)
In any case, it'll make the price of the current edition go down, so that's a good thing. I'll have to check this film out... heard good things about it.

It actually is a very beautiful movie Tyler. If you can get past your own insecurities, you'd enjoy it as well I'm sure.
Brokeback Mountain was my favorite movie of 2005, and I have been waiting for a special edition to be released in order to finally own it on DVD, so this is great news. It certainly took a while! Here's hoping for a commentary track or 2.

Looks like Universal can't quit Brokeback.

I'll have to wait and see what kind of extras we're talking about before I upgrade. I really like the artwork of the original release, I hope it stays the same.
I'll get it sometime, great film, shame about the original dvd
awwww I love this movie. but I already own the standard dvd so I'm set.
I could SWEAR I read about a new two-disc edition MONTHS ago; shortly after the first one came out.
