yeah but they change so much that most of the time the only thing the movies have in common with the real story is the basic idea.

Ed Gein inspired Texas Chainsaw, Psycho, and Silence of the Lambs. And let's not forget about all the stories Jack the Ripper, inspired...

Horror wouldn't be horror without some of the TRUE stories that inspired the genre...morbid as it may be. Distasteful, perhaps? But it's an ongoing thing that's been ongoing for YEARS...

Not to mention the Zodiac movie, which also was based on a real serial killer.

As tasteless it is, i bet it draws attention. Which, in the end, is money in the bank.
