I have the UMD for this one, it was 3 for 20 sheets and I wasn't fussed about getting the DVD due to lackof extensive extras and the fact that the film although really good, isn't as good as some others of a similar nature in my collection.
The UMD's really fun though, weird carrying round the latest Bond film in your pocket

It appears that both the UK and US versions of Casino Royale are pre-cut. However, the R3 Hong Kong version seems to be uncut. It also contains a DTS soundtrack (reported to be faulty). I am looking into this, will keep you up-to-date guys. I just hope they get it right with R4 Ausy version. R4 DVDs are usually uncut and have the same PAL spec as UK. Fingers crossed!!!
It is confired, the R3 hong Kong version is uncut. The US version is pre-cut like the UK version, according to www.dvdcompare.net. I am holding out for the R4 Ausy version, hope it is uncut. I would rather have uncut version in PAL than NTSC.

It looks like it. The cheap R3 will do me until I get the BD, the R4 will only be expensive (compared against the R3 anyway).

Guys, it looks like the Australian release has a 5 part making of. Can this be confirmed or disproved?
Great to see Casino Royale BD geting a PCM 5.1 track (HDs answer to DTS), it's going to rock.
With that number of audio tracks and the films length it's going to have to be a BD50 (Dual Layer) which is a good thing.
RalphFiennes wrote: Based on the above list of extras and the running times given for each extra feature for the R1 version, there are 2 documentaries that run at 30 minutes each and 1 that runs at 50 minutes.
I didn't realise the lengths had been released thanks. That would be over 4 hours of footage (including the film) on one DVD-9, not something I'd want. A 2 Disc release (DVD-5 + DVD-9 no doubt) was in order.

I'll wait for an ultimate edition - hopefully we'll also have a better cover.

Get the R3! Its out first (in a month) and is a mere £9.99! :D

For all we know each extra could be 1hr long so lets wait until we know how long each extra is before making sweeping statements that it should be on 1 disc.

Let's not make sweeping assumptions that people haven't done their homework and proceed to condescend to them eh?
I'm not bothered about the number of discs, they could use three for all I care. I was merely suggesting it COULD have been put on one disc based on many of Sony's other discs which have similar and/or longer extra features on some of their single-disc releases.

GavSalkeld wrote: No way. Many of them are cut, and still are - even the new "uncut versions".
Which ones?
If you mean cuts made during edits which happens to 100% of films those don't make it cut. None of them are cut any more.
socrates17 wrote: Does the UK version of Casino Royale have Region Code Enhancement or is RCE still a Region 1 only perversion.
Back when RCE came out a small batch of Region 3 MGM titles were RCE but this quickly got pulled and replaced with standard R3 versions. Except for that RCE has only "ever" been used on Region 1 DVDs.
In other there is no way this will be anything other than Region 2 or Region 2/4 dual encoded.

Hi Samuel.
I don't 'believe that just about every film has to have some kind of extended edition!' Many films should never have had extended editions - Donnie Darko being a prime example!
I know Peter Jackson didn't make this film and I know the 007 series has had no history of extended editions. But this rebooted Bond, released by Sony, could potentially be a first. There are no deleted scenes on this edition and the extras are extremely limited. Plus we know that Sony don't have a problem with reissuing Bond films with a higher classification.
So who's to say we won't get a balls out (excuse the pun!) different version of the film this time, including a commentary by Martin Campbell?!
Casino Royale broke with many Bond filmic traditions on-screen, so perhaps it will break with the tradition of no extended cuts too!

There have never been any extended editions of James Bond films released. Uncut but not extended. The uncut version of Goldeneye featured frames of headbutts that were cut from the original UK edition (but weren't cut worldwide).
The ultimate editions were released after Sony bought MGM, so as this doesn't seem to be the ultimate edition, this may get rereleased as an uncut ultimate edition around xmas.
Why does everyone believe that just about every film has to have some kind of extended edition? Peter Jackson didn't make this film, and the series has had no history of such.

Anyone reckon they'll go for a 15-rated/R-Rated super-dooper extended DVD version of the film with loads of extras in a few months' time?

so same vinilla cover has R1 it seems.
Miss Moneypenny told me there will be a double dip and a triple dip in the future.Bond is always aching for another dip.

Shame no commentary. This isn't really an Ultimate Edition now.
Thanks Gav. It's appreciated.
Going by past experience it really could go either way. It certainly won't be the first time the UK has got got a cut Bond film.

I'll have a look, my good man, it was so long ago I read it online.
Incidentally the MPAA passed this long before the BBFC did, and the reason for this is because the filmmakers had to go away and re-cut the film, then let the BBFC see it again before it being passed as a 12A.
The BBFC-sanctioned version is the version used in Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland. The uncut version (i.e. the version with full torture scene intact) was released elsewhere.

Any source links regarding Michael Wilson saying in the press the USA cut is uncut?

I have reason to believe the International (non UK) version is totally uncut, again from someone close to the film and the fact Michael Wilson said in the press that the US edition is unscatched in the torture scene proves this.

Quote: The best advice to people holding out in hope that a country SOMEWHERE in the world is going to release the uncut version in the next couple of months is - LET IT GO! It's not going to happen - if the uncensored version ever does surface, it'll probably just be included as an extended/alternate scene in a future special edition - that version will probably have a DTS track, too...
Exactly!
I disagree that's not never going to happen however. It took years but Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies are now uncut in the UK and Licence to Kill is finally uncut world-wide.

Now that MGM are dipping their toes into definitive editions, I guess we can expect all the Bonds to be re-released under the banner of 'definitive' in 2008 for the cinematic release of Bond 22. I daresay the specs of this one will be brought up to at least the standards of the other 20 films at that point. Myself, I'm not bothered. I don't really bother with extra features anymore as they all tend to be the same rubbish talking about how bluescreen technology works and other stuff we've heard a dozen times before on a dozen films that are similarly made. The only times extras are interesting are when they talk about stuff that is (or was at the time) cutting edge, such as the excellent "Empire of Dreams" documentary on the Star Wars set, or the Lord of the Rings documentaries, or the excellent Red Dwarf documentaries. Deleted scenes are generally deleted for good reason, and bloopers are often just the cast flubbing their lines and laughing at each other. As for commentaries, I'm with Mr Spielberg - not a fan.
But I'll be happy enough with Casino Royale in the form outlined above, and will be picking it up for a fiver or so in the summer.

This is what we figured all along. The BBFC approved cut was used as the main copy, making it a little easier to get past censor boards around the worlds.

Quote: Assumed the region 2 would still be cut, was wondering whether the pre-cutting applied to the US release as well. I'm guessing they simply released the same version here as all other territories but it would have been enough for me to buy the region 1 had it been uncut.
I heard the USA Theatrical Cut was the same cut :-(

Really? Any source links?

Thanks for the info. Any idea what the US version had trimmed, just out of curiosity?

The rest of that sentence should read:
In order to gain a 12A rating. 15 Uncut was also offered.

I still can't believe it's not getting DTS :-(

The only substantial extras seem to be the Becoming Bond and James Bond for Real featurettes, however long and exhaustive they may be. Does anyone know if the US version is the same as the pre-cut UK theatrical release (the rope torture scene was toned down at the behest of the BBFC)?
no commentery?
definately a better release further down the line then as Martin Campbell does like his commenteries.
