  • Graduate First
  • Loulou

Street date – 5/17
Quote: Cohen Film Collection is proud to present for the first time in HD, a collection of films by director Maurice Pialat, the iconoclastic French auteur often called "the French Cassavetes." Volume One includes the family drama The Mouth Agape with Nathalie Baye, the slice-of-life film about teenagers in suburban France Graduate First, and Loulou, a tale of tortured love of which Andrew Sarris wrote "A masterpiece of subtlety and eroticism. Gérard Depardieu and Isabelle Huppert just happen to be the sexiest couple in the history of the cinema."  This volume is rounded out with over four hours of bonus material, including the 2007 documentary Maurice Pialat: Love Exits, narrated by Gérard Depardieu.

A Married Woman

Street date – 5/24
Quote: A Married Woman is an often overlooked masterwork from Godard's most productive period.  The plot appears to be simple: Charlotte (Macha Méril) is a young married woman having an affair with an actor.  When she discovers that she is pregnant, she must decide which man is the father and which man she will stay with. In Godard's hands, however, the film, described as "a film about a woman's beauty and the ugliness of her world," is also a biting critique of consumer culture and the media constructed obsession with image. Subtitled Fragments of a film shot in 1964, in black and white, Godard creates a modernist collage that is beautifully shot by Godard's longtime cinematographer Raoul Coutard.  Cohen Film Collection is proud to present for the first time in the US this stunning new restoration from the original negative.

City of Women

Street date – 5/31
Quote: In a railway coach Snàporaz (Marcello Mastroianni) wakes from a nap and seduces a beautiful stranger. Then he follows her through a forest to a weird hotel where a feminist convention is being held. He is so unnerved by the vociferous hostility of the militants that he hides in the mansion of a female killer who has wooed and won a thousand hearts. Snàporaz will be forced to run the gauntlet before waking up and realizing that his adventure was only a crazy nightmare.  Fellini's surrealistic and over the top fantasy earned him four Silver Ribbons by the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists.
