Studios wouldn't risk making an action flick about Iraq because of isolating half the audience. I am aware of "The Kingdom" coming out, but that's just a simple person's "Munich".Quote: Wanna know something, if you took Fox's action film MAN ON FIRE starring Denzel Washington and put the Arnold Commando character of John Matrix in it, that would have been a perfect sequel to COMMANDO.
Matrix could have been an alcoholic like Denzel but goes one-man army mode.
Matrix could be doing small bodyguarding jobs to get some money here and there. His now grown up sexy daughter Jenny (Milano) hates the life he lives now and that is what makes John take up drinking.
Then Martix snaps like in Commando when someone important in his life is taken away again...like the little girl in "Man On Fire". 20TH CENTURY FOX should have turned MAN ON FIRE into COMMANDOS. Wasn't "Man on Fire" not very good?
Oh and also, I doubt he has time to star in movies, what with being governer of California and all...

WHAT IS THIS GARBAGE!?
This "garbage", my friend, is the Region 1 release.
The UK Definitive Edition line uses steelbooks. And for anyone else who cares, BBFC has classified two different versions of the film - uncut - one at 86min 29sec and one at 88min 1sec.

Cheddar J. Cheese, with so many sequels nowadays in Hollywood, why not go back to the well and do an old school sequel. If a Commando 2 aka COMMANDOS was done right, action fans could flock to a bloody as hell war movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger! Look at the responce Stallone's JOHN RAMBO has gotten from the trailer at Sly brought to the CANNES FILM FESTIVAL and YOUTUBE.com
300 did HUGE and it was a violent blood bath with a action packed war story. I think there are enough Commando and Schwarzenegger fans to make COMMANDOS for guys that want real old school action.
Arnold always wanted to make a war movie, so Fox should track the numbers of this COMMANDO Special Unrated Edition release and if it sells huge and fans want a sequel (which they do), have someone write a really gritty war movie with JOHN MATRIX overseas in IRAQ or something. Look at THE THREE KINGS with George Clooney. Make COMMANDOS like that but more serious and more action packed.
Alyssa Milano has nothing better to do and she can make a cameo.

Well, someone wants "Commando II" pretty badly don't they?
I've never seen the film, but with this re-release, it's only a matter of time before it's broadcast again on my movie channel. I'll wait.
I've never seen the film, but with this re-release, it's only a matter of time before it's broadcast again on my movie channel. I'll wait.
With Arnold's love for politics and the current war going on overseas---during the Bush administration like the Regan era---maybe it's time Arnold finally made COMMANDO II.
Ever since Commando came out in 1985 and blew action audiences away with it's hard core violence, unbelievable body count and dark Arnold humor, fans have always asked the question if a sequel would be made. Commando II was at one point going to shoot in 1988 with mega producer Joel Silver back on board, but it never happened!
Arnold felt the script wasn't right and passed on the idea. Even acclaimed writer/director Frank Darabont took a crack at writing a big budget version at one point. Darabont's script version can be found at www.commandofans.com. This fan website is so popular that it gets hundreds of hits each week.
Last year in 2005, an article was printed in The Hollywood Reporter which reported that a Commando sequel was in the works. What was even better was that Fox or the producers wanted Arnold back as John Matrix after he leaves governorship. It was also reported that if the upcoming Commando Special Edition dvd sold really well, a big budget sequel would be greenlit at Fox.
When I contacted original Commando director Mark Lester months ago and asked him about finally directing a sequel to his only Arnold film, he said "I'd love to direct a sequel". Mr. Lester then finished by saying "contact the studio for me and let them know". Just incase 20th Century Fox or Mr. Schwarzenegger read this editorial, Mark Lester is currently working for American World Pictures and can be contacted at mark@americanworldpictures.com.
With hard over-the-top action films coming back and doing great at the box-office (Transporter 2) and action hero character Jack Brewer of Fox's mega hit tv show "24" fighting terrorists and eating up the ratings, Commando II should once again be looked at as a possible vehicle Schwarzenegger should make. It has become a brand name action classic over the past decade. Super soldier John RAMBO is even making his own comeback in 2007 with RAMBO IV and will surely be a blockbuster smash*!
Stallone's one man army character brought films like Commando into popularity and both Arnie and Sly competed at the box-office in 1985 with Rambo: First Blood Part II & Commando. Commando was released to anxious crowds on October 4th. It made $7,700,000 in its opening weekend, opening on 1,495 screens in the United States. This film solidified Schwarzenegger's place as a box-office star. It went on to gross $35 million in the U.S. and $57 million worldwide. It is considered by most to be Schwarzenegger's purest action film. There is less character development than in later roles, and a greater emphasis is placed on action. The film had a huge impact on the genre and has remained Schwarzenegger's most beloved cult film. Steven E. de Souza wrote the screenplay for Commando. His other writing credits include 48 Hrs, Another 48 Hrs, The Running Man, Die Hard, and Die Hard 2.
Arnold should produce Commando II through Oak Productions and maybe convince pal James Cameron to help produce with his Lightstorm Entertainment at Fox. The plot could incorporate politics with the current war overseas, much like Rambo: First Blood Part II did back in the day. It surely helped Rambo's box-office to a powerful 150 million domestic and 300 million worldwide gross. The female/teenage demographic would be taken care of in the sequel with an older sexier Alyssa Milano helping her father out this time around.
Schwarzenegger can DEFINETLY still play retired Colonel John MATRIX...older yet still the tough bad ass from the first film. If the general public or action fans go watch Sean Connery in Jerry Bruckheimer's action thriller THE ROCK, they'll know exactly why Arnie can still pull off playing his 80's military character. Connery was older in that film than Arnie is now. Yet Sean played the bad ass instead of younger action star Nic Cage in the Michael Bay thrill ride. Sean did the fighting, the running, the jumping and the falling down!
If Arnold and James Cameron don't want to move on with TRUE LIES 2 for whatever reason, COMMANDO could become Arnie's new MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE meets RAMBO style franchise. There could be a couple more missions for COMMANDO II & III. All the Austrian Oak has to do is pump himself up real hard (like he did for T3) and let all "f**king hell break loose on moviegoers" as JOHN MATRIX!!!

Must have for me, I bought the Commando used for $5 a year ago, watched it probably 10 times in that year :D so this is a must for me...
I watch Predator 20 times a year...
I watch Predator 20 times a year...
I really hope this scene is included:
IMDB Trivia: During the scene in the shed, after Matrix cuts the soldier's arm off, he was originally supposed to hit the victim with it and tell him to shut up. This scene was edited out as being too macabre.

Cool! Me want! Pure volence - the only Arnie way!
Commando in IRAQ...Have JOHN MATRIX go to Iraq with some kind of mission in war. Make it fun, serious and big!
This is cool news. I love this movie but only have it on VHS. I really like that cover art.
I hope if this sells well that Fox and Mark Lester will write a great script for a sequel. See if Arnie would do it after he is out of office and make it raw, lower budget (60 million) and kick ass. Only do this if Arnie comes back though. No direct-to-dvd bull. Stallone is doing JOHN RAMBO so maybe Arnie should do COMMANDOS. Like ALIENS, it could simply be called COMMANDOS and have Colonel JOHN MATRIX be forced on a mission ala THE ROCK with Sean Connery. Action fans really need hard core action films and Sly will do it with JOHN RAMBO (which will become a massive worldwide hit), so Arnie and Fox should with a bad ass sequel to COMMANDO. What do you fans think?
Oh, when I said lower budget (60 million), I ment by todays crazy budgeted blockbuster standards (ie SPIDER-MAN, PIRATES 3 etc).
Bring on the TRUE LIES SE as well. Arnold films must have made Fox a fortune on dvd...PREDATOR, COMMANDO and TRUE LIES.

Ooo! This is a definitely a keep in my library! Never picked up the first release since it was pretty weak on the extra features. But, this one is a worthy pick-up! Like what most of you guys say, if only they would release it as a steel-book case!!!
Oh, hell yes! I will be buying this!
I do wish it was a steelbook, though...

WHAT IS THIS GARBAGE!?
I can tell you now that there is probably no difference at all. I'm presuming that all the EXTRAS are put on Disc 2 for the R2 set, like "Coming to America" was done to R4 - where it is released as a 2 Disc set compared to R1's 1 Disc.
This is great! Wonder how it compares to the upcoming R2 2-disc set?
is it just me - or does the photo / artwork NOT look like Arnie ???
I remember watching the Hindu rip-off on Russian t.v. a long while back... It was fun. (In a squeeky girly voice) "COMMAAAAANDOOO!!!!"
Yeah...C'mon Cameron and Fox..pull ya finger out, and give us a TRUE LIES ULTIMATE EXTENDED DIRECTORS CUT!

Yep, this just made my day. I'll definately get this and here's hoping that a True Lies SE is on the way. If Fox is doing this one, they're surely working on a True Lies one.

I'm happy.
This just made my day.
I desperately need to add this to my fledgling Schwarzeneggar collection....

Damn. I'll buy this. Never seen it before.
ok maybe this is a worthy a double dip. Just never seen the old edition cause its on tv so much i never bought it. But, where is the steelbook or lenticular cover? That may make me bite.
Hell yeah! DC is only 5 minutes longer but I never owned this to begin with, so I'll pick it up now for sure.
But to echo Slither Thru's comment, where is that TRUE LIES special edition???

A Director's Cut? F**K YEAH!!!!!!
Will this be the same edition that is coming out on R2 in the "Definitve edition" steelbook series? I sure hope so!
Yes, I agree with Matt. I was a click away from importing the R4 or R2 simply for anamorphic enhancement. I am SOOO glad I didn't. I watch this movie so much with friends because we always laugh at how funny and action-packed it is. I can't believe we are finally getting a special edition. Even without great extras like commentary, director's cut, deleted scenes and featurettes, this is a must double-dip simply for anamorphic image AND never before remixed 5.1 audio!
Now we need to get a "True Lies" special edition.

I don't see what you should be upset about. Other than appearing in boxsets, the last time Fox released this on DVD was in 1999...eight years ago. It's not like they just released it last year and are already making another trip to the well with some slightly better uber-edition. At least it's anamorphic this time.
