I've held off on buying these on DVD, so this three-pack is the perfect fit for me. I love Curse of the Golden Flower and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and have heard good things about House of Flying Daggers (but haven't seen it.)
Hmm, we're not getting this, just the Crouching Tiger BD (which Sony still hasn't officially announced). Wouldn't mind Golden Flower if it looks better than the DVD (and let's face it, that wouldn't be hard), but Daggers isn't a good transfer in any region.
Unfortunately you can be fairly certain the the subs will be like the other US/UK releases, rather than the ones on the original Chinese DVD release (that went OOP years ago).

Is Hero from a different studio? Because it'd make more sense to do a Zhang Yimou triple feature replacing Crouching Tiger with Hero, but I've heard the image quality on both Daggers and Golder Flower are pretty bad. It's a shame considering how beautiful the cinematography is both films. *sigh*

What was the difference? I just unloaded the HK release.
And that sucks that we don't get a new transfer on Daggers. Wtf? And those Weinstein asses better get the move on a Hero BD!

The original R3 Columbia Tristar mainland China release of the film had different (more accurate) subtitles in a yellow font. As often happens, the translation was dumbed down for the international market. After a while the Chinese disc was actually re-authored to omit the English subtitles because so many people were importing it.
It is a real shame the original subs (used in the cinema) were only ever used on the original R3. I think the R3 Superbit and re-pressings used the dumbed down subs. It's why I still own my R3.
Golden Flower has an excellent transfer, read reviews
. Daggers is fine IMO, if not thing amazing.

That didn't last long, they released it again subs soon after.

Yes, Hero is from Miramax (Disney) I could imagine how grand it would look and sound in 1080p with DTS-MA 5.1

I never said the Golden Flower BD had a bad transfer, I said the DVD did. I wasn't aware that they ever re-issued the Crouching Tiger R3 with the original English subs (with the proper translation). Where did you get that info?

I guess it will come down to price for me. I really don't want Golden Flower, but I would love the other two.
House of Flying Daggers is the best of the three.
...don't want Golden Flower, already got Flying Daggers (worth the price of admission for the bamboo fight scene alone!)...come on, Sony - is it too much to ask for a standalone release of Crouching Tiger?? Please don't make us wait indefinitely!...

No, you said you'd get wouldn't mind it, if it's better than the DVD. Which it is, much better.

Now you're asking. I read it years ago, a few months after it was re-issued without English subs/dub, it was re-issued again. It was a long time ago.
I'm unsure if the current R3 has these subs or not. I know the R3 SB is the same as the R1 (dual encode).

Some decent cover art.

That's good to know at least. The UK DVD looks like they smeared it with Vaseline. It definitely didn't look like that when I caught it at the cinema.

Both HD Digest and Blu-ray.com do not give HOFD high marks on the video transfer. I tend to believe their assessments, although I have not seen the BD version. COTGF fares much better according to them. I don't know, I think Sony could probably do better on HOFD's transfer, so I'll wait until Crouching Tiger is available separately.

Ftw. Wish I didn't dump it, then. This and the dummy Let the Right One In subs raise my blood pressure.

HoFD looks pretty bad. I saw the UK release a while back and I was not at all impressed. I wasn't that bothered because I have the DVD and it's not exactly my favourite Yimou film.
This would be great if Golden Flower was replaced with Hero. But since Miramax owns the rights to Hero, we'll probably see it on Blu-ray in another 5 years or so.

this is why DVDActive owns every other pathetic BD news site that cant truly keep up. DVDActive FTW.
