Actually I just tried it on my standalone and it uses the mandarin track, so I guess it was because of my software player settings that the English track was selected on the PC.

For me, even if the R3 has technically less accurate subtitles I still prefer them, because they translate better into the meaning of the words. Whereas the International subs tend to translate it literally, making it more literal but losing some of the meaning.

There is also no good reason why they were changed.

What! That's absurd. I think the UK and USA DVDs do too. Whereas the R1 SB (which only has Mandarin) and obviously R3 don't.

Apparently the English subs on the R3 aren't all that accurate either. I saw an article by a Chinese guy where he gave the actual translation compared to the subs, and they were some way off. No subtitles are perfect, but it is annoying that they changed from the theatrical subtitles to the newer ones after the initial release, seemingly for no good reason. Pity the Coco Lee music videos aren't on the disc.

The most annoying thing is that the disc defaults to the bloody English dub!

Thanks Chris. I figured the subs would be that way.

I'll still be getting it but will hold on to my R3. I just adore that scene in particular. It also has some exclusive extras, we'll never likely see used again.

I understand the dumbed downed ones are actually more literal but all that proves it literal isn't exactly the best way to go.

Great about the picture quality. The SB DVDs are currently the best ones but only minutely more than than standard DVDs.

The subs are the latter (unlike the original R3 disc). Not really had a chance to look at it in any great detail, but the video transfer looks pretty good. Much cleaner and more detailed than the R3 DVD anyway.

Oh yeah, the DVD says Zhang Ziyi. I believe you're right Chris. No doubt it's so she doesn't have to keep explaining how Chinese names work. At least she didn't give herself a Western name.

I have this on preorder, Amazon don't seem to be selling it as a steelbook though. I actually haven't seen this yet so it should look good on Blu hopefully.

The PS2 artwork stupidly used the characterised versions that appeared in the game, instead of the real artwork.

No, I mean the US cover. At the moment the film is only available as part of a boxed set in the US, and the cover is horrible.

Gush, gush, gush. Great news, those better not be all the extras! Loads are missing. I'm so picking this up, no need for the box set.

The cover isn't surprising. I still prefer the R3 cover with Chang Chen on it. I'm still annoyed the subs will be the dumbed dow ones.
