Dead Alive (US - BD RA)
Lionsgate announces a release date for Peter Jackson's splatter classic on BD...
Title: Dead Alive (IMDb)
Starring: Timothy Balme
Released: 4th October 2011
SRP: $19.98
Further Details:
Today I got an email from Lionsgate concerning an update to their Blu-ray catalog. Among prestige choices like The Cider House Rules, Life is Beautiful and Cinema Paradiso, and terrible releases like Scary Movie 2 and Scary Movie 3, was a mention of Peter Jackson's classic zombie-gore-comedy
Here's the press release, which doesn't mention any extras, or extended status (I'm assuming it will be the US unrated cut):
Quote: One of the goriest fright films of all-time makes its high definition debut this fall as Lionsgate releases Dead Alive on Blu-ray Disc. The early film from Oscar® winning director Peter Jackson (Best Director, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, 2003) is a cult classic with horror fans. Hysterical, outrageous and filled with bloodthirsty zombies, the film hits Blu-ray just in time for its 20th anniversary.
A mama's boy who has the unfortunate task of looking after his aging, evil mother, Lionel (Timothy Balme) believes his dreams have come true when he meets the love of his life. While out to sabotage her son's happiness, his Mum (Elizabeth Moody, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring) is accidentally bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey, which turns her into a flesh-eating zombie. Lionel is forced to put his relationship on hold to stop his undead mother, and the rest of the town that she's infected before it's too late.

Yep. I assume that all 104 minute cuts are marked 'Braindead'. Unfortunately my UK Braindead disc is non-anamorphic, and generally c**ppy looking, so I'll be getting this and lamenting the deleted footage. Maybe an Aussie or UK company will stick it on Blu-ray uncut. I feel like Jackson only recently lost interest in his old gore movies. He was still talking them up on the LotR commentaries, and even through in a callback gag in King Kong. Was Lovely Bones that terrible of an experience? And now he's making the Hobbit out of contract, not because he actually wants to.
Just heard that this release of Braindead will be the US unrated edition, which clocks in at 97 minutes. It might sound good, but bear in mind that it's several minutes shorter than the version that other countries (including the UK) have always had, which runs at 104 mins.
The 97 minute copy is Jackson't prefered cut - as always, he opts for the shorter versions of his films.

I'm excited. This is my favorite Peter Jackson film.

Thanks for mentioning that release, I have added an announcement about it.

I prefer Bad Taste and the sheer bad taste of Meet The Feebles to Brain Dead, but it is definitely miles ahead of The Lovely Bones.
In fact, with the exception of Forgotten Silver, which isn't even a movie per se, I have watched all Jackson's movies and have liked all of them. But The Lovely Bones was the worst of the lot.

I grew up loving this film, still think it's Jackson's best. I do love the LOTR films, but something about the insane gore in this film just makes it great. Can't wait for this Blu.

Ooo yeah, have some custard with the movie.

That is one seriously low blow.

Ties with The Lovely Bones in the race to be crowned Peter Jackson's weakest film.
Made all the worse by having the awful US title.

Matt, it's on the Netflix Instant Queue right now. Watch it. Make sure you eat a really big dinner first though. In fact, you should probably eat a really big dinner WHILE watching the movie.
There were rumors a long time back that Peter Jackson would revisit his infamous three and release special editions of them. I had been holding off Meet The Feebles and Brain Dead since then. However, it looks like this relese will not have much by way of special features. Well, maybe if the transfer is good, I'll finally get this.
I did buy the Bad Taste 2 disc edition. That was my favourite Jackson movie, so I couldn't resist! The 2 disc treatment was overkill, but the document was really amazing.

There was a Canadian BD of Heavenly Creatures, but I think it was really, really bad.
Best romantic comedy of all time, I forgot to add.
Awesome!!!! Selling my DVD tomorrow!
Hopefully this will be a nice upgrade from the old unrated DVD.
I've never cared for that box art or tagline. It would've been neat if they got licensing to use the Mondo poster (http://i.imgur.com/Ro6Q2.jpg)
