It's all your favourite Christmas movies at once, in an hour, with monsters. And the Doctor. And a honeymoon. I've honestly never been so excited about writing anything. You're right of course Bros. I think this release is just for diehards, completists, and of course those who missed the original broadcast. A lot of Christmas films usually have their releases delayed until the following Christmas (A Christmas Carol for one) but I imagine this will sell okay but you might not be in the mood to watch it for some time... A Boxing Day release would have been more appropriate.

This would be because it's a Christmas 2010 episode of a British television show that's going to be broadcast on Christmas Day in Britain.
It would make no sense whatsoever for it to be released on DVD/Blu-Ray several weeks before the transmission of the episode.

BBC America will be airing the special (and the Proms concert, I believe) on Christmas night if anyone doesn't feel like waiting for this release. :p
I've got to imagine this will also be included in the Series 6 package next year. Each Christmas Special so far has always been included in the following year's season set. No need to double dip, I can wait.
Also, very much looking forward to Gambon appearing on Doctor Who! Looks like a fun episode.

& here is the more interesting fact! All releases were to be simultaneous for both regions 1 & 2! I guess they meant just the classic series releases & not the new series releases. The region 2 dvd & blu-ray releases of this title are slated for January 24th 2011!
I first looked at this and though it could make a GREAT xmas gift for a friend... then I saw the release date.. February? Really?
