Zhivago, who is married to Tonya (Geraldine Chaplin), an aristocratic girl with whom he raises a family, is also in love with Lara (Julie Christie), a nurse whose life has been destroyed by tragedy. Repeatedly brought together and separated from each woman by war and revolution, Zhivago is torn apart by conflict. He loves Tonya deeply but his poetic soul belongs to Lara. Much like his beloved country, Zhivago’s spirit becomes battered by the devastation of war as he struggles to maintain his individualism in the face of overwhelming odds.

Another one for mum - her birthday is coming up soon...
Julie Christie is gorgeous.
Disappointing cover but I can still see me picking this one up!
The artwork from the previous DVD edition was waaaaay better than this one... although this new one is not so bad either.
Still, I'll hold on to my original copy

Artwork added...
There are chick flicks but this is really a dude film for sure. Women sometimes don't get this film but for some guys it speaks volumes about how love and emotion can affect a man and just about tear him apart. I've always wanted to add this film to my collection but previous version upon rental didn't seem to do cinematic justice to one of the greatest films ever made. If this restoration stands up, I will be adding this. The extras look pretty good too. Just wondering what the artwork will look like. It's not a deal-breaker for me, just curious.
Never actually saw this. Will rent.
Finally more David Lean on Blu-ray!! Everything about Doctor Zhivago is unforgettable: the story, the unforgettable cast and the characters they portray, and Maurice Jarre's mesmerizing score!! Day one purchase for me!! Now Sony, please hurry up and announce Lawrence of Arabia on Blu-ray!! :-)
The previous restoration had been heavily lambasted by expert (The Godfather, Rear Window, Spartacus...) Robert Harris ("when you try to restore a film like Zhivago for $120,000 and you come out with a piece of garbage, that speaks more of Warner Brothers and their inability to run and control their library" ). I guess he was heard this time even if he isn't mentioned as taking part in this restoration. And, for the record, he's worked a few times with Warner after this outburst.
Warner isn't one of the worst offenders in re-releases. They tend to repackage stuff and add a few bonuses but, apart from a few cases (300, the multiple cuts of Watchmen, I Am Legend), George Feltenstein keeps the same transfer for a few years and upgrade only when there are significant improvements.
