A chill ran down my spine when I saw this announcement. "Empire of the Sun" is probably Steven Spielberg's most under appreciated film. I have always believed that it was over shadowed by the simultaneous release of Bernardo Bertolucci's equally impressive "The Last Emperor." Thank you, Warner Brothers for finally giving this film the attention it deserves.

It was also released in the Netherlands about a month ago.
It contains a nice clean transfer and a decent 5.1 soundtrack, and indeed the documentary A China Odyssey, which is not 60 minutes (not even in R1/NTSC land), but 49 min, and narrated by (yes!) Martin Sheen. This is the same docu that was on the good old Laserdisc, and unfortunately still looks like it came of an old video mastertape. Still, it is a very good behind-the-scenes docu, that really shows how big this movie is in scale, in the pre-CGI era of cinema. I'm just so glad this movie wasn't made recently, it just wouldn't be the same. Just look at the crowds in the first act or later on, the aeroplanes. It's the real thing, and you can feel it. That's how movies should be made. Bravo Mr. Spielberg!

Excellent excellent movie
How did you get this title for Xmas? Well, could it be that it's the Polish Edition (apparently) and you are in Poland and what the initial article is refering to is the UK R2 release. Please enjoy your DVD and stop trying to be clever. Getting DVD's first isn't something to aspire to in life. It's just sad. Particularly come March when everyone and his dog will be able to purchase Emp. of the Sun and probably cheaper. I think the film is beautiful but I won't be buying it until it is reduced in price, as I've just done with Duel (£4.99) and Jaws (£5.99), later in the year. The end result will be the same though. I will have seen the film again, just as you have, but it will have cost me less so that I was able to buy more DVD's. Think about what's good in life. Being the first to own yet more plastic isn't cool fella. Discuss.
This buying of DVD's is a disease in itself. Think about what you buy, how you buy and more importantly, why it makes a difference owning something before anyone else. There's nothing worse than someone talking about a film and having someone else spouting off 'Mnn yes. I've had that film for ages'. No one cares. I was first to have a pooh in my house this morning. So what? You don't get me taking a picture of it and downloading it onto the internet as proof. I'm sure you're a lovely person and I bare you no ill will. But then again, with a name like £ukasz, maybe you are just a knob after all. Happy New Year.
Martin Sheen narrates the doc... oh well, I still liked "Apocalypse Now." I guess I can stomach through it.

Who'd a thought that that little boy would grow up to be a closet homosexual with a car crash fetish?
I'm pretty sure that little boy grew into a psychopathic killer, a not-so-closeted Ewan McGregor lover, Batman, and a buff dragon slayer. I'm not recalling the car crash fetish.
No. What you've gone and done there is confuse the writer J.G.Ballard (and the character from the film) with the actor Christian Bale.
