I found the movie to be quite silly, but there is no denying that it is a completely unique and unforgettable experience; something I wish there were more of these days. I'm very thankful that I got to watch it in a theater, and I'm not sure the movie would keep its hold on me any other way.
Also Sam Spade, I would like to compliment your Hara-kiri avatar. One of my all time favorites. Deserves a LOT more attention than it gets.
Thank you Hogaburger. I am a huge fan of the genre. Hara-kiri is one of my faves, but all time favorite goes to Sword Of Doom. Best blind buy I have ever done. When The Last Sword Is Drawn is worth checking out too. That's a more recent one.

One of the worst films i saw last year. As someone else has said its desire to experiment leaves the viewer bored rigid and the whole affair just becomes one extremely long tedious mess. If he had stayed till the end he could have been treated to seeing an abortion and a rather effective first person POV car crash. Apart from the soundtrack and interesting title sequence at the start there really is nothing to recommend this film. It is extremely dull when compared with Noe's other (far superior effort) Irreversible.
Besides Inception and Scott Pilgrim this was one of the best films last year, a must see, a truly unique expereience.

I think I have to see this one based on the trailer alone.
Will be getting the blu.

trippy cover- cool
Amazon has both editions listed as 160 minutes
this makes no sense.
The theatrical version is 143 min NOT the directors cut.
Another thing is only the dvd artwork has the unrated directors cut written at the top.
No extras?? Seriously?
If this is indeed the 143 theatrical cut and no extras then this is a very shoddy release.
I emailed both MPI and IFC about what version it is and got no replies.

This movie looks extremely weird. Perhaps a bit "too" weird.
Nevertheless, I will be renting because my interest is certainly piqued. Although, I'm going to be totally honest, I'm going for the visual aspect, and the fact that this movie has some positive critical reception doesn't hurt matters.
One thing is for sure: If the Blu-ray video/audio transfer is done correctly, this'll be like having a seizure!

Based on the trailer and pingas' review/impression, I shouldn't be expecting a trippy version of Trainspotting/Requiem-for-a-Dream?
The movie sure looks interesting though.

I barely caught a show of this film at the TIFF Bell Lightbox, two days ago. After about 20 minutes, I felt bored by its experimentalness and slow pace that I decided to walk out and have my $12 refunded before it was too late. There's an admittedly cool psychedelic scene when the main character does drugs in his apartment, but then a friend comes over, they walk downstairs and through the streets of Tokyo, talking kind of unintelligibly about life and there aren't any cuts. The scenery isn't really anything special to look at. I was a bit nauseated by the camera, too, although I was OK with it. Since the film is about two and a half hours long, I didn't wanna risk my money on it. I actually knew it comes out on video later in the month, anyway, so I'll likely rent it. Was I unprepared for what I was going to see? Perhaps. Am I willing to give it another chance? Sure.
Epileptic stay far far away.
