Forbidden Planet Releases (US - DVD R1)
Warner Home Video announce a 2-disc special edition and an ultimate edition
Title: Forbidden Planet Releases (IMDb)
Starring: Walter Pidgeon
Released: 14th November 2006
SRP: $26.99 & $59.92; $28.99 & $59.92
Further Details:
Warner Home Video has announced the upcoming 50th anniversary 2-disc special edition and ultimate edition of Forbidden Planet for 14th November 2006. The movie has been transfered from fully restored film and audio for these new widescreen releases, with a remastered Dolby Digital 5.1 track.
The 2-disc edition will retail for $26.99 and will feature four hours of special features including a commentary, additional scenes, two follow-up vehicles starring Robby the Robot and three documentaries. "Also of special note is the lost footage, which features preliminary takes of various special effects including the space ship and interior and exteriors. Very few people knew of the existence of footage, which, since the '50s, had bounced around to various stock houses and vaults, simply marked as The Saucer Footage. Star Wars special effects artist Dennis Muren, who had learned of the footage in the '70s, brought it to the attention of WHV which finally tracked it down in New York City."
The ultimate edition will go for $59.92 and includes everything in the 2-disc as well as a collectable Robby the Robot replica with moveable limbs, Forbidden Planet and The Invisible Boy reproduction lobby cards portfolio, and a Forbidden Planet original theatrical poster mail-in offer. We've attached the artwork for both releases as well as a look at the ultimate edition's contents below.
In addition to the standard DVD releases, the film will also be available on HD DVD in separate special edition and ultimate edition packages on the same date, each with a retail price of $28.99 and $59.92 respectively. The high definition version will contain an English Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio track as well as French and Spanish Dolby Digital Plus 1.0 tracks, and both HD DVD versions of the special edition and ultimate edition will include the same extras as the standard DVD versions.

Wow... that Ultimate Edition sounds amazing. I've never seen the film but I'd love to add some classic Sci-Fi to my collection. I'm in.

Never seen the film either, but feel good enough about it to possibly get the Gift set...hmm.
A Robby the Robot repllica is definately worth the sixty bucks.
For those who've never seen the film. It is definitely worth the rental and now the purchase. Truly an american masterpiece for its time. Even if your not a sci-fi fan, this film is well made and the plot is very solid.
Highly recommended.

This is the one I've been waiting for. It is easily one of the most influential sci-fi films of all time (pretty good for going for a movie that came out in 1956). It has also been referenced in other films (it's what the kids were watching while Laurie Strode babysit them in John Carpenter's Halloween). I've owned each format version that has come out (except for laser disc), and the original 2000 DVD release is now long in the tooth with its snap case and two-sided Pan & Scan/Letterbox offerings. If you haven't seen this, rent or buy this one.
p.s., and I'm pretty sure Robbie is not a replica here. This is his first appearance here in film.

This movie rules, and it's great to see it get the respect it so rightfully deserves. I'd easily take this over the newer "Star Wars" movies.

I'd take almost anything over those godawful movies.
But yes, "Forbidden Planet" is truly excellent. I'm definitely going to pick up this release.

Say it isn't so!
I will definitely be picking this one up. It's definately interesting to se Leslie Nielsen in a serious role

I love the film. A true sci-fi classic that I can watch over and over again.
FINALLY. This has been expected for a couple years now. If only Warner could get to Mars Attacks, Beetlejuice, Bonnie & Clyde, Creepshow, and Nightbreed... then Warner will have filled everything that I desire from them.
So is the 2-disc the "Almost Ultimate Edition"?
Great News.
Now I can finally add it back to my collection.
I had to throw away my old Criterion LaserDisc cause it developed Laser rot.

Superb and intelligent film, featuring one of Leslie Nielsen's best performances (yes, him).
I've been wanting to buy this movie for awhile now, I'm glad I never bought the current edition on Amazon. I'm going to try and get the Ultimate edition.
A true masterpiece, I'm greatly anticipating the HD DVD version which will be coming out shortly.

I sold my old single disc version of this like TWO YEARS ago on the news of an upcoming SE. NOW it's FINALLY coming and I can't wait.
One of the greatest Sci-Fi films of all time. Day The Earth Stood Still is still my #1 as far as atomic age Sci-Fi goes, but this is a very close 2nd.
I'd love to get the Robby replica, but like Worst Nightmare says above, best to wait to check out the quality first. Anyone ever make a really good GORT figure?

I've never really been that disappointed with the statues, etc. I'll have to see where the price breaks come out for the retail on each set.

I love the art for the Ultimate Collector's Edition. I also love getting Lobby cards with DVDs, I have them with Mark of Zorro, Towering Inferno and the Poseidon Adventure. This whole set looks great and I definately plan to but it now.
That Ultimate set look absolutely AMAZING! Seriously, nice one Warner. Looks superb.
Definitly one of the best early SciFi movie with The Day The Earth Stood Still, in deed
And, as usual with good SciFi movies, it is inspired by a non SciFi material :
For FB it is The Tempest from (yes) Will Shakespeare...
At last a worthy edition of this masterpiece...
Keep going Warner... Lots of lost (old and not so old) treasures in your vaults waiting for a proper special edition...

Interesting. I may rent this, or buy the cheaper version. I appreciate the historical coolness of it, but I doubt I will watch it more than once. Leslie Neilsen is cool.
At least it is packaged with respect and not called the:
"Rockin Robby the Robot Release Edition"

I've never seen this film, but as a Sci-Fi fan I can't wait to pick up this classic! The artwork for both editions are very cool, but considering I've not seen it yet and that I need to save money, I will just buy the standard 2-Disc.
OK, I'm sold, that Ultimate Collector's set looks FANTASTIC!
Anyone else think Anne Francis was HOT in this? I mean really man!

Is it one of those "So cheesy it's good" sci-fi movies we all see so much of or is it genuinely good like "War of the Worlds"?
I've never heard of this movie but it seems cool. I'll have to check it out =].

There is nothing cheesy about this movie as far as I am concerned. I cannot wait to have that Robby the Robot sitting on my shelf!

War of the Worlds good...this, War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still are my three favorite classic sci-fi films.

Isn't this loosely based on a Shakespeare play?
